  • Comments: I like this course. Most of the issues I had were my own. I need to improve bike and run. Swim current was ridiculous, but everyone had to deal with it. The volunteers were not as good at this race as at most others I've done. Many were not paying attention. Second bike aid station was one guy juggling water and Gatorade. Needless to say, he couldn't handle multiple riders at once.

  • Comments: This was my second year doing this race. It is well organized with tons of volunteers. I was glad that there was an Aquabike division that I could change to. I was able to wait until packet pickup to change. There was a tent for the Aquabike finish where I was told I would receive my medal. It was a little disappointing when I finished and crossed the timing mat and went to the finishing tent. There was no one there! My husband had to go find a volunteer who did not know what to do, but was very nice and went and got someone else, who got me a medal (it was the wrong one but at least thy tried)!

  • Comments: Volunteers were great. Course was pretty good. Weather the day after was much better - but not much to be done here. Pre-race meeting was helpful. start time was coordinated with the tide, which helped. athletes were friendly

  • Comments: Overall, the race was run well. Tons of friendly volunteers all over the course. Was a little disappointing to have no water at the second bike aid station, but I was pretty back-of-the-pack at the time. Also, a couple of the aid stations on the second loop of the run were low on water or out of ice, and I was front-of-the-middle-of the-pack by then.

  • Comments: A good choice for a first HIM. Even though the cutoff is at 8 hrs, they let people finish after that. Bike is beautiful and not too hard, run is very flat and lots of shade.

  • Comments: An extended race report at my blog: http://trimomhalf.blogspot.com/2013/09/i-did-it-i-am-half-iron-man.... Set Up Events always puts on a classy race. Even though there was a small fiasco re: swim waves and timing, they fixed it immediately. They are well run events, catering to the athlete and making it a great day. Thanks, Set Up!

  • Comments: Race was very well organized. My only issue was all of the drafting and group riding on the bike course. I spent 2 miles behind a truck that could not get around a group of riders. I will be back next year.

  • Comments: I have mixed feelings about this race. I know there is no way to stop the effects of a hurricane. The swim was a funky course and we had to swim against the current. We had to run through mud and pine cones to get back to our transition. The road hazzards were mostly an act of nature. I didnt like that the volunteers didnt open the water bottles for the bikers. I hated the path that we started out on. It was a flat tire waiting to happen. I was expecting a flat course and it wasnt. I say that but if you ask some of the people from Virginia they thought it was. It all depends on your idea of flat. Some of the run aid stations were really good and others just had drinks poured and you had to stop and figure out what you wanted. I liked the parts of the run that were in the woods and running on a wooden bridge. I didnt like getting a tick on me!! Thinking about this race now it wasnt as bad as I first thought. Nobody said that a half was supposed to be easy. HOWEVER, this makes me wonder.

  • Comments: The swim ended up being harder than I expected. More buoys definitely would have helped make navigating easier. The bike course was fast and fun. The run course was also nice with several stretches of softer surface (crushed stone/low grass). There was fun music afterward and the prizes were AWESOME - etched wine glasses and bottles of wine. I only wish that the post race food was something I could have handled. BBQ with potato salad and mac and cheese was just too heavy at that point. I would have liked more fruit, bagels and peanut butter, soup or stew, or pasta. But overall, this was a really fun event and I will definitely look forward to doing it again in the future.

  • Comments: Good race, although I would offer free massages to the athletes. It was a misleading to go have a massage, wait in line for close to 45 minutes only to find out the massages were at a price. At the Augusta Ironman there were plenty of staff to provide free massages. Post race food could have been better as well, not much in the way for vegetarians.

  • Comments: Well now that I can look back at this race and know I had beat last years time by 4 min I am happy.I really struggled to push myself this year. I know that I will never be the person who can win my AG. I do this just as a sense of accomplishment considering where I have came from and only ever hope to beat the last races time. SO look out next year!!

  • Comments: This was my first HIM, one of the reasons I picked this race was because it was flat. I would highly recommend for first HIM. Did not put in enough long workouts due to work schedule or I feel I could have done better time wise. Overall I am very happy to completed my first HIM and really enjoyed our stay in the Williamsburg, VA area.

  • Comments: the good: 1) run course was a fantastic course with trails and well shaded 2) volunteers on run were very helpful and energetic. 3) bike course was fun. rolling hills kept it interesting room for improvement: 1) swim course needed to be marked better 2) bike course volunteers need to take off the plastic seal on the water bottles 3) race day chip pick up...why not the same time as package pick up.
