Subject: Should I sign up for this race?
So I broke my arm pretty thoroughly last Sunday and am having to transfer two race entries (One for this Sunday and one for August 16) to next year.  I really want to race again this year, I at least want to set it as a goal.  I have an appointment with the orthopedist on Monday to find out what my long-term cast, healing, and rehab situation is going to be.

The race would be an Olympic at the end of September.  I was building for a HIM.  I really don't want to call my season done yet.  The injury was 3x compound fractures in my right arm.

What say you BT?

Should add: Surgery has already been done.  Plates have already been installed.

Make sure it's all clear.  While not as critical as your injury, I've had to potentially bag much of this season as well due to health stuff (already missed 2 races, another coming up, may be able to salvage the remaining 2 or 3).  But I am letting the medical professionals help guide my decisions

That totally sucks. I hope you heal up quickly!

That said, I'd definitely wait to see what the surgeon says. You might heal faster/slower than you should, so its hard to say what you'll be able to do come September.

Hope you get to race, though.

Dan,

You are young.  You have many race seasons ahead.  Check with the surgeon and go with that.  If he says no, then no.  You need to heal first, my friend.  Besides, I need you to lose some of your fitness so I can beat you in QC next year.

I agree with David, I mean, silly sox fan, I mean, Crowny....

Too many people try to rush back into it and end up hurting themselves in the looooonnngg run.

I'd say, listen to the doc, do your PT and rehab, and see where that leaves you.

And speaking of the QC-I am TOTALLY signing up for that next year so I can race with my two best buds!

ditto, wait and see. BUT, that said, even with the cast, you can get some biking (trainer) in. And after the cast is off, swimming , trainer and running. I say no outdoor biking due to possibility of crashing. (friend crashed and broke humerous in 3 places and both ulna/radius right before IM CourD (whatever it it is!) then re broke one humerous doing push ups! Waited a full year to do IM, with success. TAKE CARE OF YOUR SELF!!!

Wait until you hear from the doc.  After breaking my wrist in 2007, I was back on the bike in about 8 weeks, but it wasn't totally comfortable and I'm glad I wasn't trying to race then.

Personally I would just wait and see what happens.  Recovery always seems to take longer than you think it will and you don't want to push the recovery because you sunk money into a race and don't want to waste it.

Recover first and THEN figure out what you want to do.

This coming from the person who signed up for an IM 2.5 months after knee surgery...but, after 2.5 months I was pretty sure the knee was moving upward!   AND the IM was a year away...

Worry about healing first.  If you sign up for a race, chances are you are going to rush recovery and getting back into training.  That's not a good plan.

Maybe find one in Oct or Nov to give it a little more time.  I'm kind of in the same boat.  I got injurred before the season even started....I'm on the mend and looking to do something before the season is over.  I've been looking at a HIM but might drop back to an Oly if I can find one close enough.
