Overall Rank = 2597/
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 123/?
Pre-race routine:

Got up and went to transition to set up, walked back to B&B and ate some oatmeal. Tuff skinned my foot and put on blister protection thing. Got wetsuit on and went down to the swim start. Got blister on TOP of foot. Saw Rick and Karl go off. Pre-race hair braiding ritual with Wendi. Was yelling for Jen at her swim start and finally got her attention. She was concentrating HARD. By the time I walked all the way to the swim start and putzed around for 2 hours the blister thing was off my foot...best laid plans huh?
Event warmup:

About 2 miles of walking and I swam a few hundred yards. It was VERY wavy. Turns out 4-5 foot wavy. I was worrying about Wendi and Janice the whole swim.
Swim
  • 33m 11s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

This swim was totally brutal. The waves were 4-5 foot I am told. I could not see the bouys for most of the swim. First leg you could only breathe right, second leg left. There is a lot of Tampa bay missing and in triathletes tummies!! I was worried about Wendi and Janice the whole time and hoping they were OK. I knew they were both nervous about the swim. I felt like I was out there about a year. I figured I couldn't be doing too poorly when I came up on the wave in front of mine. Caught a few caps from other waves too. It was really hard to get a rhythm with the chop. I was very thankful for my floatly wetsuit!! Spotted Renee on the last leg. We came out of the water together.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. I can't complain with as bad as the conditions were
Transition 1
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

Transition is HUGE. I had half my wetsuit off easliy. I had put my timing chip under my wetsuit which made taking it off infinately easier. Had the plan to bike sockless which made T1 easy. I walked to the bike rack because I didn't want to start OOB
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 1h 26m 31s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.23 mile/hr
Comments:

I have absolutely no idea what went wrong on the bike. This is a very poor performance for me. First thing that happened was the top of my aero bottle popped out and I couldn't seeem to get the silly thing to stay put esp on the brick road thus losing half my e-fuel. Poor Roo was practically a red bike when I got done. (HORRORS) I figured OK drink what you have and get the bottle at the hand off. For some strange reasons they did not have squirt bottles and handed out open bottles of water. I re-filled the aero bottle as best I could and threw it off. The velcro saddle bag on my bike rubbed my left leg completely raw. I have no idea why I was so slow. Yes it was windy but it didn't seem to effect anyone else that much so I can't blame it on the wind. Can't blame it on the heat because the wind kept it cool.
What would you do differently?:

No idea. Wish I did
Transition 2
  • 03m 15s
Comments:

Came into T2 to find the chick next to me had kindly dumped her water in my running shoes. nice. wet socks wet shoes. Because I had biked barefoot I had to wash and dry my feet. Because I had lost my blister protection I put a new one on. Really I'm surprised it was that fast.
What would you do differently?:

Not be racked next to soemone who dumps water in your shoes?
Run
  • 1h 26m 31s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 13m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

PPPHHTTTTT. No legs. Original plan was run one mile and walk one minute at each aid station. I quickly talked myself into 9:1 run walk which quickly turned into Ok I'll do the first mile 8:2. I just couldn't run. I had no legs. Quickly realized that water was better than Gatorade. after the first mile Janice (foolproof) showed up like an angel and stayed with me the whole time. Turns out she didn't finish the swim and went out on the bike and run just because she could. I felt so bad to be holding her back. Saw Jen smoking the course, Mike, Wendi, and Renee....and I 'm sure some others. I probably walked about half the run course. Got blisters in new and fun places on my feet.
What would you do differently?:

Get bionic legs? No idea
Post race
Warm down:

Got my finishers medal and went straight to the medical tent. Another diadvantage to being slow...they ran out of ice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I wish I knew

Event comments:

Its a well done race. I am very disappointed that I was 17 minutes slower this year esp since I did this race last year on a broken hip. Yes the swim was choppy yes it was windy but I can't blame it on any of that. It was fun to meet BTers live and in person. I got to meet Hunter Kemper.

Things I learned at this race
1-Listen to my body NOT what ANYONE else is telling me to do with it as I know it best
2-Be self-fish. At an A race I need to do what I need to do to get ready and let everyone else worry about their own stuff. Being nice doesn't result in a good race
3-Don't train one way then follow another approach on race day despite what ANYONE else tells you to do. IE: train for 4 months using HR zones then do RPE on race day.....stupid

I can run 6 miles anytime.  I hardly ever get to spend 6 miles of time with you!!!!

You looked so strong and happy on the run!  You did great under some gnarly conditions.  We're going to have  a great time in Toledo!  I'll put on my checklist - watch out for errant water pourers in Transition!  Thanks for a great time!

I think you did a FINE job, Sue!  You made it to the start line UNINJURED this year!

You were a spectacular roomie.  We should do this again sometime...

Remember...all these other races are speedbumps on the way to IMFL!

You're doing fine, right on track.  Last year I felt crappy in a 1/2 IM and thought there was no way I can do Lake Placid.  Take the bad days with a grain of salt...you'll be OK by the end of the year!!!  Nice race, even with the rough conditions!!

Hi Sue,

So happy to read your race report. Everyone has reported tough conditions and this is just a step on the way to the big goal at the end of year. Sounds like that start of your bike was a bit rocky and you showed so much strength to think logically and just keep going.

Hope the water dumper gets a little bit of race karma (is that too mean?

Take Care

Cat

SUE!  too much negative self talk, sister. You did great. You survived the swim.  you can;t possibly compare last year to this year, this year you are putting your eggs in a much biger basket- IMFL. What if you had pushed harder and gotten hurt?  You did just what you are supposed to do...

Yay for finishing the race without injury

I like what foolproof said... she can run a 6-mile anytime.  Spending time with a friend is more precious.

It was so cool to go into and come out of the water with you! That's pretty wild when you think of how much ocean-motion there was.

This was our FIRST tri together! Looking forward to doing more with you!

Hey Sue!  Excellent triathlon, Sweetie.  You really did well on the swim leg of the comptetition.  It's too bad about the blisters though.  Either you have the wrong kind of shoes or you don't lace them tightly enough.  Anyways, congratulations for a job well done ...

do not be so hard on yourself. I think you beat rons time if you care The conditions seemed very tough and finishing seems to be it's own reward this year.

Sue, when I think about all of the hip pain and frustration you went through last year, I see finishing this race as AMAZING!!!  When put into perspective, an Oly is a long race, period.

I hope you gave the dirty water squirter who got your shoes a good kick in the a$$

Great seeing you again.  How's the anterior tib?

Sounds like this was one incredible swim- tough way to start off mentally- and it sounds from your RR like it just wasn't your day for things to "click". You had fun, learned some..now will reexamine what went RIGHT (cuz come things did!) and wrong..and move on ...
What a great chance to meet other BTers and assess where you are for the start of the season. Congrats!

Sorry you had a tough time this time around. It happens to best (I know you know this too). You toughed it out and gave it your best, nothing else could be better. Glad you got to meet other BTers and a pro, more than that had fun.

If my luck is better next year, I'll get to meet you guys out there then.
