![]() Anyone watch the Megaladon special on Discovery Channel last night? It's supposedly a "documentary" with some "dramatization" about evidence that "scientists" have found in recent efforts to prove that Megaladon (a 50-100 foot prehistoric shark) still lives today. I thought it was somewhat informative to learn a little more about what this shark could be like, why it possibly went extinct, and what it could possibly do if it were still alive today. But the evidence they presented that it indeed still lives today was a joke. Has Discovery Channel become that desperate where they just make a whole bunch of crap up? Google any of the events such as the attacked fishing boat or the humpback with it's tail bitten off...and it returns...hmmm...nothing. Living in Hawaii, I was certain I would have heard about the humpback whale. Especially when the picture they showed of it, as well as the video, clearly shows it washed up on a beach that was right in front of someone's house. The last time a whale even not even half that size washed up on shore in Hawaii, it took them almost a week to cut the thing into pieces and truck it off because they would do too much damage to the reef if they tried to tow it back out to sea. I also had to chuckle when they showed the sonar monitor showing the whatever they tagged diving. Just watching the depth reading, it was diving around 1000 feet every 4-5 seconds. Even if something were to dive straight down, to dive at that speed would be 136 mph. If it were to dive at say a 45 degree angle, it would be going 192 mph. They were all huddled around the monitor saying..."I've never seen anything dive like that." LOL...no kidding. |

Most of the events depicted (the boat wreck, the footage from the Brazilian Coast Guard chopper (that was really cool, though) or the photos of the U-boats from WWII were real, or at least nothing came back on the interwebs. This is getting out of hand -- first the `videos' of the mer-people, and now this? What is Discover/Animal Planet thinking? They're totally misleading people. |

![]() | ![]() My wife and daughter were watching it (they spent a couple hours watching a show about real-life mermaids one other time). I was reading in the room, but it sure sounded like that guy was really reaching. Good for him, though - he got a two hour show out of it. |

After an hour of watching it, and then the host introducing the male diver as a "star" of the show, I brought up the mer-peeps investigation to DH. It was entertaining...too bad I wanted to be more educated. Was going to do a bunch of Googling today, but looks like you guys did it for me. Thanks. |

agreed! me and the wife are HUGE shark week fans. so much that we sought out the folk that do the air jaws episodes and traveled to the other side of the world to watch it in real life, from the same boat and photographer that does the show. talk about awesome!!!! third trip is in the works... this megaladon thing was embarrassing for discovery. yikes. they can do better than that. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hate shark week with a passion. If they're not making crap up, they're sensationalizing shark attacks or doing stupid crap like putting a shark in a cage with a person and wondering why the shark is attacking said person. I used to scuba dive a lot and I have diver friends who love (and count down the days to) shark week. I just don't understand it....especially from divers. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ^^^^Hahaha! We found Sharkfest on NatGeo Wild tonight. Bet that's what we watch all week. In my shark ignorance, I did not know they could "throw up" their stomachs outside of their mouths to clean them out. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I really HATE shark week. All shark programming 24/7 X7. Argh! Sorry, I really like Discovery programming and it's one of the channels that normally has something decent to watch when everything else fails. Not so this weekend. Seems like an oportunity for other channels to grab some viewers, except they all showed crap this week too. NatGeo was even showing shark stuff...sigh. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() They had a cool study last night where they tagged a shark then had a torpedo with cameras rolling follow it around, which I thought was pretty cool. The episodes on `Air Jaws' are all pretty cool. It seems they really jumped the shark with that Megalodon episode though. It really lacked any bite. |

What's with the "After Dark" bit? We turned it to NatGeo at that point. |

I dont know why they do cheeky sh*t like that. Just let the episodes talk for themselves. |
