Subject: Help me decide.. half marathon this weekend?

I'm following a marathon training schedule to prepare for the Marine Corps Marathon at the end of October.  I have a 14 miler on the schedule for this weekend.  There's a local half marathon this weekend, we're supposed to have gorgeous running weather, and I am kind of itching to run in it.  I know it's not the full 14 miles I should be running and I'll be moving at a faster pace than I do my long runs during training.

Do you guys think it's OK to run in it?  Would running at a faster pace for that distance, help me, hurt me, or not make a difference? It'll probably take me a few days to fully recover.  Run it or skip the race to do the 14 mile run at a slower pace?  Thanks!

If you want to do the race, and think you can do it just to enjoy it and be surrounded by people but GO YOUR TRAINING PACE ... (with a 1-mile warmup ) ... then by all means do it as a training run.

To do a half-mary as an unplanned RACE in the middle of mary training puts a little too much stress on things, I think.

I would run it, but I wouldn't race it. Maybe at a faster pace than a training run, but not much faster. If it takes you any longer to recover than recovery from your training run would take, then you went too hard.

If you want to be anal about the distance, run a mile before or after.

I would do it.

Warm up, cool down, you'll have more than the 14.

If you recognize that your paces will be slow for the rest of the week, but still shoot to hit the miles, it'll be a good test of your fitness.

I would run it as well; good fitness test and I wouldn't worry about the difference of .9 miles (assuming you do no warm-up/cooldown).

I say go for it. Do it as a race to test your fitness. You still have almost 3 months before your marathon. A couple extra days for recovery won't hurt you this far out. However, if at any point you start having pain then back off. No sense pushing hard if it will leave you injured.

Thanks for the input guys!!  It looks like I'll be doing the half this weekend.  I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a dumb idea.

Ben Moore Memorial Half in Annapolis on Sunday.  $35 entry fee!  I'm suprised their permit was approved.

Hmm, they still have time enough to cancel it! Tongue out

Go for it!  Could be a roling course depending on where they do it.

DO IT, DO IT.  Run it as a training run and not a race.   While everyone else stresses, you can just smile and enjoy yourself.

Run don't race.  I don't see adownside unless you push too hard.  Heck, you get aid stations, other people around.  Makes the day go alot quicker.

Race the h*ll out of it....just dial back the rest of the week, intensity wise or run it at goal marathon pace and see how your training is progressing.

I don't believe in signing up for races as training days.

I went, raced it, and am thrilled with my time   Pace wound up being a 1:25 / mile faster than my last 12 mile training run... yipee.

My legs are tired today and I'll probably hurt for a few more days, but it was definitely worth it to see how the marathon training is coming along and I had a blast!  2nd in AG 20-29, but unfortunately they only gave prizes to 1st.

Great job!  RR Coming or just inspire in your log preferred?

Why thank you!!   I'm not going to do a race report since it was pretty uneventful, didn't wear my garmin, and I have nothing too interesting to report.

However, I do treat every water stop like I'm in the desert and it's my last chance at water.  I need to work on that part... I could save some time there

Great job, congrats. And this is EXACTLY why you race a race and don't just run it!
