Subject: Solid Food on IM?

Do most of you get your nutrition from gels, perpetuem(or something similar), etc or do you stuff a turkey sandwich in your jersey pocket or special needs bag.  I plan on getting my moneys worth out of IMWI and expect to be out there a long time.   Too long to go without solid food.  I've tested taking in solid food on long bricks and have had no GI issues at all.  Just wondering what your experiences were.

Thanks!

Gels & liquids for me.  Takes more energy to digest solids and I'd rather spend my energy getting to the finish line faster.

Your body doesn't need solid food.  But if it helps you remain comfortable over a long day, then go ahead.  Many do.

All liquid for me. Infinit on Bike, Coke and Broth on the run.

Infinit has protein so it curbs hunger.

No I methodically elmintated solids in training.  Just didn't need it.

Perp and Carb Boom Apple Cin on the bike. Had 1/2 Uncrustable and threw out the other 1/2. Same w/ a package of Cliff Shot Blocks.

Run - alternated gelsw/ water and GE at every other aid station.  Nothing solid appealed to me. Tried some chicken broth but stomach retaliated.

Guy I ran w/ ate everything sight -  watermelon/banana/pretzels etc.

Coke is nector of the gods though.

Practice. practice. Practice.

I eat solid food on my long rides and also at IM. Not a lot but some. Goldfish are good, as are candy bars that I like...good carbs look for ones with low fat that you like.

solids on the bike (to supplement gels):  power bars, slim jims.  a few candy bars in the s/n bag

gels/liquids on the run. although I did have pretzels and cookies during my IM run since they were there and I was starving!

I like chomping a couple salted nut rolls on my long rides. I starved at Moo last year doing only perpetuem so had to make a change. As others have said, coke and broth are priceless on the run.

Kathy, are you talking about the crackers? or the actual little fishies!?!?! You are hardcore!

I second the Infinit, I take a gel prior to the swim, 5.5 bottles of Infinit on the run and 4 oz. every 20 minutes of Infinit on the run. It takes a bit of "learning" so you can skip the solid foods. Using Infinit (or any other liquid) almost fools your system that you are full but still my body craves a PB sandwich or powerbar...but Infinit seems to work very well for me.

Coke is nector of the gods though.

Closely followed by Chicken Broth!

to the OP:  Do what works for you.  BUT, there are ways to not have solid food on course.  But don't try them for the first time at IM.

Infinit gives me all the calories I physically "need" for training long, but it doesn't give me what I mentally need.  After 6 hours of Infinit, I just want something different, so I will have a Payday (king sized, of course, broken into 3s) in my Bento Box, as well as a PB&J somewhere, just to get a change from that sweet flavor.  THese aren't calories i need, but tastes I want

leapdog - 2008-08-06 2:52 PM I starved at Moo last year doing only perpetuem so had to make a change.

Curious as to how concentrated you made it and if you used gels as well. I increased it to six scoops and that ended up being sufficient for 3-3 1/2 hour rides. This eliminated my need to supplement Perp w/ anything other than gels.

Again I worked it out in training and thankfully it worked at my IM.

I did 2, 3 hr bottles (6 scoops). Like others, I just needed something solid. Perhaps it was more mental than physical.

After a few hours of gels & Infinit, I'm sooooo tired of sweet stuff!  Aroud the 3-4 hour mark I have Stacey's Sea Salt Pita Chips, lots of salt and yummy!  Plus they hold up in the heat/sweaty jersey pocket

I always try to use mostly solid food but some gels are always in my box.

No salty stuff but for sure something containing high quantity of BCAA

I think it depends on what your body can do, I had a friend who did a 12hr IMKY last year and he did to McD's cheese burgers on the bike...

All the Cals he needed....

I have a turkey sandwich and a Snickers bar in my special needs bag.

After 50-60 miles, I have to eat something solid or my stomach will start to lock up on me, especially given the amount of electrolytes I'm ingesting to keep from cramping.

I usually eat the sandwich right after I roll out of SN and save the Snickers bar as a treat for myself when I hit the end of the 2nd loop and start to head back to the race site (or roughly 85 miles).

I see this on another thread, but don't things like a Snickers melt? And a turky sandwich? Botulism?

All liquid and gels for me.

Gel prior to swim.

Maltodextrin, gels, and gatorade on the bike.

Gels, gatorade, coke on the run.

Oh yeah, I guess there's a Subway somewhere on the IM CdA course, a friend did that race a couple years ago, brought a few $$ with him and stopped for a 6" sub on each loop.

Once I ate solid food during IMLP 07, it was my downfall. I was cruising and feeling good on just liquid and gels but had trained to have an uncrustable. Once I ate it, I could not digest anything and I ended up cramping 1/2 way through the run, bad. Ended up walking the second half of the marathon and was never able to run without my legs locking up. I will not be using solid foods next time except maybe sucking on a few pretzels for the salt or maybe sucking on a gu shot blok.

I packed a pb&j in my special needs bags on the bike and run. My stomach gets messed up from the gels, which I only took 4 of for the entire day. I also packed a bag of gummi worms and salted peanuts too. I did find myself in the porta john on the 2nd loop of the marathon (something i'm not proud of, I still feel dirty) so as important as the food you pack, don't forget a zip lock bag of baby wipes.

A guy at IMWA last year stopped on each lap of the bike and had a coffee.  right in the middle of town!  my dad thought it was hilarious and took photos of it.

back on the subject though I have mainly gels and liquid, but had a couple of the anzac cookies that were on the coure and my saviour was vegemite sandwich!  it cuts through the horrible sweet sugar mouth taste with a nice salty change!

I've frozen a peanut butter/honey/banana sandwich for 2 of my long rides and ate it at the 75 mile mark. On my 100 mile ride I ate the whole thing. One the 112 it was a 107 degree heat index and I only ate half. No stomach problems so I'm going to go with it on my IM.

I take in solids on the bike. Not much, just a few bites of fig newtons when I feel I need them. My stomach is usually unsettled after the swim, so it helps. My stomach also tends to growl on me, even when my energy levels from a gel every 25 mins and gatorade is totally fine. I took in quite a few solids on the run, because I wasn't moving too quickly and the chocolate chip cookies just looked sooooo good .
