Expert 1170 Berkley, MI | Subject: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach I am curious - how are YOU training for your IM.
Do you have a coach, a team, an online coach, or jsut follow a static training plan?

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach Self-coached...follow basic periodization concepts that have worked for me for years. No set plan other than the calendar for my long weekend sessions. Those are set pretty much in stone (barring injury). |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach I've had a coach last 5 seasons. I like having a coach put together my training, watch my progress, see the big picture, answer my questions, and help me get ready for my races by getting the most out of my training. IM is a tough race and training on your own can work but many either over think and wonder have they trained enough and can either over do or under do their training. Having a coach with experience helps me feel more confident do the workouts and I'll be ready no second guessing. I email and talk with my coach as needed. I probably could coach myself but would rather not. I like having a specific plan to do then just execute the training on the plan knowing it is made for me with my strengths and weaknesses with my races in mind. |

Elite 4235 Spring, TX | Subject: RE: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach I would have like to have done it self coached, but as much reading and research as I was doing, it wasn't giving me any clarity on how I needed to build my training plan. I hired a coach and was initially skeptical. However, it didn't take long for me to realize how smart it was. Having an objective and educated perspective on your training is very beneficial. It was well worth the money. A generic training plan does not meet your individual needs; and we all have very different training needs. A personal coach is always nice, but not always possible. For some, coming up with their own plan works, but for me, I liked being able to train without having to spend a lot of time stressing on the details. I will continue with a coach as long as possible and will always recommend it to others. |

Expert 1360 | Subject: RE: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach going with a personal in person coach. I paid $600 CDN to register for the race. the training will cost between 700 and 900 depending on what I go with over the summer, so for me, it was a no brainer. If I don't make it to the start line, I would have wasted $600. For $90/month I get 1) training plan, 2) 4 group coached workouts a week (not necessarily with my coach), 3) one on one coaching with my coach for 1 hour a week - either on a computrainer or in an endless pool. |

Expert 1170 Berkley, MI | Subject: RE: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach I was going to do it via a BT plan, but my travel schedule is so crazy with work that I think that I need a coach to help me see through the crazy and help me get the most from my training.
It is nice seeing how everyone trains so differently!
Good luck on your races this year - I am in for 2011 IM FL. |

Champion 5495 Whizzzzzlandia | Subject: RE: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach I had a coach for 2 years... but I didn't like the specificity and the structure or the inflexibility. I stopped using a coach about a year before my IM. I hooked up with some friends that were training for the same race... one of them wrote me a plan, and we went from there. I was as prepared as I could have been on race day, and I had the MOST. FUN. EVER. |

Iron Donkey 38643 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach Since I can't multi-select - My first IM was training on my own, reading a couple of books, getting answers from BT, and training a few times with some Team Turbo Donkai members. My second IM was using the assistance of a coach, who was a friend and had competed twice at Kona, and training a few times with some Team Turbo Donkai members and a couple of BT'ers. |

Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach Yeah, I think to have a successful relationship with a coach, you need to be able to let go of control of your training 100% and just follow the plan. I am very task oriented. Give me a weeks worth of training and I WILL COMPLETE IT. I'm very OCD that way, my coach loves me. |

If training has social aspects for someone (especially on the bike), a coached plan may not be the way to go. If I had your talent and a Kona slot was on the line, I might think differently. But I may place in teh odd Clydesdale AG now and again, big whoop. Trade off just isn't there for me |

I love following a plan exactly too and hate having to move stuff or missing a workout. My friends call me the training plan Nazi. I work with my coach to schedule days that are best for certain sports and together over time come up with a weekly plan that flows well and fits into my life. I hate missing workouts. I rarely train with anyone other than either my husband or daughter but they come along with me on what I'm doing. For me following a plan as exactly as possible is fun for me. |

Pro 3883 Woodstock,GA | Subject: RE: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach Well you can look at my sig line and figure out where I stand on this issue. That being said you have to define what your goals are for the given race or race season and let that dictate whether you have a coach, follow a set plan, or just train how and when you want to (the last of which I wouldn't recommend for someone doing an IM). If your goal is to qualify for Kona (or at the 70.3 distance Clearwater) or if you have the goal to simply get everything you can out of your body whether that be a 10 hour or 16 hour IM, then you really should think about investing in a coach (and it is an investment that with a good coach you will realize the return on race day). If your goal is just to finish and your finishing time is not important then a generic plan can be a less expensive alternative, however you won't get feedback or modifications for your specific limiters from a "plan in a can". If you are just out to enjoy the social aspects of triathlon and would rather train with a group or train to just stay in shape then the less restrictive option of not having a coach or following a plan might be the best option.

I remember missing one or two because I was sick or injured and I always **ALWAYS** got clearance from the tower first. I never blew anything off. And I didn't see big results either. And I'd lost the joy. And I'd lost touch with my friends. My triathlete friends actually said to me... "WE MISS YOU, LAURA" So with an IM looming, no joy in sight, and my friends missing me.... I got rid of my coach and just went with the flow, following a plan written by one of my pals. It worked out great! Edited by Whizzzzz 2010-01-29 4:57 PM |

And I'd lost touch with my friends. My triathlete friends actually said to me... "WE MISS YOU, LAURA" IMO there is no reason that a coach shouldn't be able to incorporate the workouts that are important to an athlete with the plan. It should be the job of the coach to ensure that the athletes is as prepared as possible for the race but also to ensure that the athlete has fun. There is no reason why group training cannot be effective for all distances and a coach should be able to adjust the schedule to make it work. The problem that I see is too many coaches are married to concepts they read in the TTB or the race specific template they designed that they are unable to actually coach their athletes. Shane |

Subject: RE: Training Plan, Online Coah or Personal Coach To be fair, I did eventually negotiate a "Saturday ride as long as I want with friends", but shortly thereafter had to stop training so fired the coach at any rate. Never really got to test that theory out |
