I'm gonna do a little reading to prepare for next season, and I was thinking there might be a few of you who'd like to join me.  I'm imagining a book a month for three months.  You can do all three or pick and choose.  I'm hoping there might even be a few of you who will stop by for discussions who have already read these books and applied their principles.  Maybe we'll even get a coach or two to stop by and offer some insight once and a while :)

The schedule:

September 15-October 15: Daniel's Running Formula

October 15-November 15: The Triathlete's Guide to Training with Power

November 15-December 15:Swim Speed Secrets

Who's in?

Ahh, thanks for  the good link, Dale.

It looks like this is shaping up to be a good group!

A couple of very experienced swimmers too--nice :

I'll play.  I could always use some knowledge in how to make my swimming faster.

Sign me up!

I'm reading the book now (more than half-way through it) and WOW...I only wish I'd bought it sooner (like last year when all I could do was swim but I didn't because I was frustrated!!). I may not be done with it by the 15th to start the workouts, but I'll do my best to get as close as possible.

Sweet timing! Thanks!

Hmmmm, if there's an ebook version of this, I'll join. Will have to search tonight when I'm on a computer that doesn't block everything!

There's a Kindle version of Swim Speed Secrets, but not the workout book.  It's waterproofed, so that may be why no Kindle version.

I've read through a bunch of the book and dang,..some interesting stuff.  Now if I ever drag myself back to the pool...

I saw that....but I think Kindle books don't work on Nooks. I'm hoping to find an ePub version if they've made one (or something to convert the Kindle format to something readable by Nook).

Awesome!

I think I worded my post poorly.  We'll start reading the book on November 15th and we'll also start doing the workouts then too, for whoever wants to.  Of course, if you want to read the book ahead of time, you totally should!  For "book club" purposes we will just try to divide it into fourths for framing discussion over the month.  Does that make sense?

Ah, OK, good to know.

This means that now I'm back to being the 'over-achiever' student who is ahead of the class. Phew! ;-)

I will play along, but I'm going to be a couple of weeks behind. Need to rest up from IMFL, plus I'm getting the requisite IM tattoo, so I can't get in the water for a couple of weeks.

I'm in and so need this!    Looking forward to bringing my swim time up a notch - at least from super slow to just slow.

I'll follow along. I bought the book around a month ago and so I've been working on many of the drills already. I'm also looking for a way to improve my front CRAWL (emphasis on the crawl).

I did another swim tonight. It's feeling quite a bit better. One thing I'm wondering about is the S sweep. It seems like she recommends sweeping the arm out wide looking for still water during the grab and then bringing it into the hip in a curve. Am I reading that right? It seems counterproductive to be pushing your hand out to the side when you should be moving it back to gain momentum.

The second thing I have a problem with is keeping my right elbow high. I breath every stroke on my left side and I rotate my body more while I'm trying to get a breath which forces my right elbow down further. Any suggestions?

I need to read the book again for the first question, but on the second it's hard to say for sure without seeing. But many tend to lift their entire head up which throws a lot of things off. It'll feel fairly level, but they'll actually turn it a bit (or a lot) more upright. I've learned to keep the top of my head down in the water more and think of getting my chin up. It feels a bit like I'm tilting my head down and drawing the chin in some to do this, but it actually stays about where it should. I don't think there should be much, if any, extra rotation for a breath.

What Ben describes sounds right.  Lifting the head forces the opposing arm to go down to try to balance you out and it's really, really hard to get a good catch with a high elbow in that scenario.

One of the things I like to do with the book club is to have people cite page numbers when discussing an idea presented in the book.  I think that helps everyone (forgive me) get on the same page;) Could you give us the page number you're taking the "S sweep" from?

I don't remember seeing any spot in the book where she recommends a wide move or "s sweep"--but I could have missed it.  She does talk about mini pulses trying to find water or feel the water.  And she does talk about the middle phase of the pull having the forearm at 45 degrees to the body.

I used to think the I was supposed to keep my elbow high throughout the entire pull, and that was always confusing to me and just seemed physiologically impossible.  I like the way Sheila breaks down the pull into three distinct phases: elbow high and early vertical forearm with no bend in the wrist, the middle with the forearm at 45 degrees, and the finish by the hip.

For the S sweep, I got the impression from page 81 where she talks about the halo bench which has a piece of plastic that is suppose to be the same shape you follow during your sweep.

I just ordered the book. It's not supposed to deliver until Nov 20th, so I will have some catch-up to do once it arrives, but I'll follow along the best I can before then. I have been working with a coach 1:1 for a few weeks, so we will see if I can get some speed going for me this year.

Many people in the triathlon world think they need to just emulate Ian Thorpe to have a faster time, or have a similar stroke to Michael Phelps to cruise through the swim. Unfortunately...
