Do you wear socks to cycle/run in during a tri? Why or why not?

I do not wear socks when biking. It makes for faster T1.
I do wear socks when running because I will blister terribly if I don't, however I have done a couple of practice runs without socks. I'd like to get to where I can go at least Oly distance without socks.

I wear socks because my orthotics in my running shoes tend to give me blisters if I don't.  Otherwise, I would go sockless.

I only wear socks on the bike in the cold winter
I wear them when I run though I am training my feet to run sockless.  This weekend will likely be the first time I race completely sockless.

For racing I don't wear socks for Oly or less.  For 1/2 Iron or Full Socks are a must for me (ONLY on the RUN).....

Although in Boise this year with a DOWNPOUR I was glad to have socks for the bike.

Depends...

any distance training runs=socks

Bike rides=socks

Bricks follow the sprint and oly conventions below

Sprint tris=no socks, unless there are unusual circumstances (like my race 7/12, where I got a mosquito bite on the top of my foot pre-race, then ran sockless on it for 1 mile and it rubbed 'til it bled...thus, socks for the bike and run)

Olympic=no socks if it's warm enough, socks otherwise

HIM=2 different pairs of socks; one for the bike, then a new dry pair for the run

Half-marathon=socks

Marathon=socks definitely

Different socks for different conditions too.  That's a whole 'nother discussion

T1- I do not put on socks. All the water from my body drains into my shoes- so what's the point? Anyways, I don't get blisters from my cycling shoes.

T2- I put on socks. I will get blisters if I run without socks.

I never wear socks on the bike and the run depends on the length. For anything less than an OLY, no socks, anything longer I wear socks.

I'm a sock wearer, but only because I hate the way my feet feel without socks. My T1 is not much slower than it would be if I didn't put on my socks.

I ran sockless once, before I was considering doing a tri, and only because I left my socks at home.  Three miles into my run, my fairly new shoe had a silver dollar sized red dot from the blister that had formed and started to bleed.  I still have the scar.

Not sure I'll ever try it again, but I tip my hat to those that can do it.

I normally run and bike without socks. But last week I wore socks for a 100 mile ride.

I wear socks for both biking and running for any distances.  I look at it like this:

Socks = comfortable, easier to run through transition

No socks = blisters/callouses, 3 seconds faster...

I like going fast, but 3 seconds isn't enough to justify it.

I would really like to know why someone would wear a sock on one foot and not the other...?

I recently started transitioning to sockless. I can go sockless on the bike with no problems.
I went sockless on an Oly run, and I had a very hard time putting on some neutral Nikes with Yankz in them.
So then I went on bought some Zoots, which go on really fast.
However I tried racing in them Sunday with no socks, and I got terribly blisters. I ignored them and had a great run, but now I can't wear dress shoes at work until the blisters go away. Sigh.
Maybe I will go back to socks or adjust the laces on the Zoots.

No for OLY and shorter.
Yes during run for HIM. Probably will for full IM as well during run.

Haha I only put that option in there, just because I knew if I didn't, someone else would.

Always thought I needed sox but tried w/o this year and no problems.  So I don't wear sox for training or racing now.

During training, I always wear socks.  During a race, I typically only wear socks for the run.

wear 'em during both.. putting them on only takes like 5 seconds at most, getting the actual shoes on takes far longer.  It does depend on teh pair though as my new ones stick more to wet feet than the ones i've worn racing.

I feel that if I'm going to wear 'em might as well put them on during the transition that is usually the longest anyway, T2 is usually pretty easy with them already on.

in a sprint tri it just makes no sense to take the time to put on socks if you want to win the thing because seconds can break the camel's back.  if you are doing it to finish it makes sense to wear 'em cuz comfort is key- i realize there is a lot of in between ground too.

the longer the race the less trnsition time matters but i think that below a HIM socks are a luxury that I can't afford. i answered with the assumption it was about the race - reading some other responses i see some discussing traingin. i wear socks if it is cold not if it is hot on the bike. i always wear socks on runs. i never wear socks swimming
