Subject: RE: Age predictionAs an IT application/software developer in the industry for around 10 years who currently develops websites for a large consulting firm, I think there's a misconception or negative stigma which is attached to internet and a blur between legit and non-legit websites. Not every website is out to get spam you, just like not every mechanic is out to rip you off.
If you look at most banking and investment websites, like washington mutual or bank of america, they all have "free" calculators which predict rate of return of an investment or predict rate of retirement or stuff of this nature. In this specific case, it states their purpose: "Use these free interactive calculators to estimate or compare many aspects of your financial welfare. You'll find calculators to help you determine your insurance needs, retirement funding requirements, and your college savings budget. These tools can help you get a jump start on a secure financial future."
Now, if you think these companies normally are shady, then that's a different thing. But to think big companies like Toshiba, SBC, GTE, Vanguard, Washington Mutual and other company websites that may offer some sort of free service like calculators that calculate home mortgage payments, are spammers or spy distributors, I think you are dead wrong.
But it is smart to have a spyware program, virus checker, and personal firewall running on your machine. Edited by auto208562 2005-04-08 8:39 AM
