Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can't decide on how many bottles I should carry during the bike. When I train a carry 3 bottles plus my aero bottle which works out pretty good. But during the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. For those that have done IMFL in the past, are there ever any issues with exchanging bottles on the course? |

For those that have done IMFL in the past, are there ever any issues with exchanging bottles on the course? They usually have aide stations every 12 miles. I'm going to race like I train.....aerobottle and 2 cage bottles then use what is on the course. I'm not going to set and speed records and am in no danger of Kona qualifying. Having my familiar accelerade and nuun is worth it to me and is in no way going to affect my outcome. |

![]() | ![]() If you plan on using what they have on course...I wouldn't take any. Keep the cages but start out with nothing. I use Infinit, so I had two feed bottles in the cages and the aero bottle was used for a partial fill of fuel and topped off with water at the aid stations. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dumb question but I am going to ask anyways....if we start out with empty cages, how long till we can get water/gatorade bottles? There at the transition, shortly after the start of the ride....? Don't want to pitch my own water bottles, yet I don't want to go 10 miles till I can get some. |

Every ten miles, the first at mile 10 (at least for Silverman). Plan on pitching a couple. Cheap ones can be had at Target or WalMart. |

I wanted to bring infinit, so I would need a couple cages and the aero bottle. But one and one make sense and drink what they give me. Do you bring any other form of nutrition? |

Frick, that makes sense. I wanted to bring infinit, so I would need a couple cages and the aero bottle. But one and one make sense and drink what they give me. Do you bring any other form of nutrition? I used Infinit and just carry two bottles in my frame cages. First bottle I make normal strength and the second one double strength. Drink the first one and then pitch it at an aid station, rack a water bottle. Start on the second Infinit and chase with the water. I also had the same set up at special needs; 1 normal strength bottle and one double. You could make the second bottle really concentrated and not worry about special needs, just keep getting water to chase it or if you used your aerodrink you can fill that with water at the aid stations and squirt the concentrate in it so the aero is the right strength. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For IM Wisconsin I used Infinit. So I took 2 bottles in the rear cages and a full Aero Drink. I had 3 bottles waiting in special needs as a fill up. I had the frame cage open in case I grabbed a water (which I didn't). If you're using the course, start out with the AD full and one in the rear just in case. |

![]() | ![]() aerodrink (water) + 1 bottle (perpetuem). and another bottle (perpetuem powder) in the special needs bag. I'll add cold/fresh water to that bottle when I get it so it's not sitting around and getting warm. -ak-

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I vote to carry as little stuff as you can manage. Water is freaking heavy! I only have one frame bottle and I am going to use a Neverreach for water. I won't even start with the Neverreach full. The only problem with my setup is that I will HAVE to get my special needs bag to get the rest of my nutrition....which is a little scary if you ask me. |

![]() | ![]() Lot's of different strategies here which is good. Personally, I don't like the weight and have decided long ago to train with what's on the course. I have lost "special" bottles out of the read cages and had to use what was on the course not having trained that way and have paid. I do however have a 1 bottle in addition to aero bottle, usually water in case I drop a bottle at a station and for spray down if and when I have to "relieve myself". |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I trained with what was on the course and knew the first aid station was about 7 miles from transition after a nice long hill. I had about 1/2 aero bottle full Gatorade and a 1/2 bottle of water and then picked up more gatorade next aid station. Why carry extra weight when you can get some soon...just make it so you don't run out. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was taking to my coach about this very topic. I am going to start with 1 aero bottle with Accelerade, 1 bottle of Accelerade, and 1 bottle of water. I have been training to eat only solid nutrition while biking and jells during the run. I will discard the bottle of accelerade once I use if to refill my aero bottle. I also plan on having a second accelerade bottle in my SN bag. I will pick up water bottles only when I need them and will not carry extra. As a precaution I have also consummed Gatorade during my training rides incase I miss Sn. I am lucky that I have an iron stomach. Ha Ha, that is kind of funny. I have always had the iron stomach, now the rest of me will be iron. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here's mine. Aerobottle---Infinit Behind the seat bottles---Double strength Infinit. Squirt half bottle in Aero at a time, and half bottle of water from the course. This way, bike is always getting lighter. YEA! ALSO: Since I'm using HAMMER GEL on the run, I'm strapping on a flask of HAMMER GEL to use IF.....I run out of INFINIT and switch to JUST WATER. OR....Loose rear Infinit bottles and still need nutrition. THEN my tummy will already be ready for it's run nutrition. Don't wanna use INFINIT on run, cause I don't wanna carry heavy fluid container(s), or stop for SPECIAL NEEDS. Just gonna carry HAMMER flasks on run...much lighter. my 2 cents |

Cycling Guru![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() One. That's it. Fully course supported other than gel flask. You guys are making it way too complicated .................. Edited by Daremo 2008-10-23 5:07 PM |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() With Aid stations every ten miles, one is sufficient for me. I always have at least one Gu in pocket (just in case) but otherwise the races have always been well supported. Make sure you can train with the same Gatorade du Jour as the race provides! Exchanging bottles on the course is pretty easy, just try to ensure there is plenty of space bw you and the person in front of you. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wish I could say I could make it easy but... My stomach HATES gatorade...so I will be carrying Infiniti on the bike and in a fuel belt on the run. IN my SN bag, I will have a LOADED second fuel belt for the second half of the marathon. Just switch out belts and go. As I empty the bottles, I toss them. I know its alot of money down the tubes but it helps with the weight around my middle (like I don't already have ENOUGH weight around my middle). On the bike I carry double strength Infiniti in bottles....grab water from aid stations and mix. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

X2 I can't stomach gatorade and this way all I need from the course is water. I also have a flask with Hammer gel on my top tube. It would be nice to use what is on the course but if that doesn't work for you...it doesn't work for you. |
