The fall marathon season is upon us.  Twin Cities, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Marine Corps, New York, Philadelphia...

  • Which one are you doing?
  • What is your goal?
  • Are you healthy?
  • Any issues?
  • Post marathon plans?

I'm doing The Indianapolis Monumental on November 1st.  My goal is 3:25, which would be a huge PR vs. last year's 3:47 at Columbus.  I've had some plantar faciitis issues in my right foot.  Stretching religously has helped, but it's still there...  Otherwise, I'm feeling very strong and confident as my long runs have gone well (15, 16, 17, 19 all done) and have a 20-miler this Saturday.

Once the marathon is over, I'll take ~ 4 weeks off from running to get my foot healthy.  Lots of swimming, stretching and strength work are on order through the holidays.

Good luck fellow marathoners!!!

Baltimore, this coming weekend (Saturday the 11th).

Ummm, just finish.

Healthy, yes.  Trained for it?  Not even remotely close.  My longest run in about 2 months was yesterday at 12.2 miles .......

Lack of training.

Down time for the first time in a few years.  Taking two weeks completely off of running/biking with a purpose (may do a few "recovery" runs or spins, but not real training - may not do anything at all).

I've done this race for the last 4 years so this will be #5 starting it (DNF'ed the first one, then successful finished the rest).  It's become a tradition even if I did not train for it.

Philly Marathon with 1) a goal of 9:00min mile average. 2) a goal of sub 4 hrs. 3) a goal of no one finishing in 1/2 my time

I'll sign up after this week providing everything is still in working order.

I have 3 marathons this Season:

Long Beach Marathon, 10/12/2008 (Tuneup Race)
Tucson Marathon, 12/07/2008 (Goal Race)
Boston Marathon, 04/20/2009 (Yeah Baby!!!)

I had originally planned on doing Santa Clarita in November but it got really complicated scheduling wise (I am going to Arizona to register for IMAZ 09) so I decided to run a local half in November instead as another tuneup for Tucson.

Thanks for kicking the thread off; Interested to see some of the other marathoners here chime in

ETA: In my final week of taper for LB and definitely ready to rock. I nailed all of my long runs during the training cycle and have been finding some great intensity during my taper time.

I'm doing Marine Corps Marathon (10/26).  It'll be my first marathon.

My goal is just to finish.

I think I'm reasonably healthy.  I haven't had any injuries this year.  I have had a lot of GI problems while training, so that may affect my race day.

Post marathon plans: taking a nap?  No, I'm doing a half marathon in Richmond 3 weeks later and then a 5k a week after that.  Once those are done, I'm going to take some time off.

Which one are you doing? - Spokane Marathon 10/12/08.

What is your goal? - No real goal this time, I would like to push the last 10k but I'll have to see how the first 20 miles shake out.

Are you healthy? - For the most part.  I have been having some foot problems (PF) but I think I have it under control enought to run.

Any issues? - I have a lot of issues but very few are running related.

Post marathon plans? - Get back on my bike and back into the pool.  For the most part I've taken the summer off from riding and swimming.  It's time to build some base before IMCDA09 training starts.

Great thread, thanks Brian!

I'm doing Detroit on October 19. My aggressive goal is a 3:20 BQ. Based on my long runs (two 20's and one 21 miler), I'm pretty confident I can go 3:30 (assuming all goes well with my taper, I can stay healthy, and it isn't in the 90's like Chicago last year.....). Struggled with ITB issues during the peak volume weeks, but have been religious about stretching and icing.

Post marathon? Some down time. I'm physically and psychologically tapped as I've basically been going hard since I started training for IMCDA last November. Have a labrum tear in my left shoulder that is keeping me out of the pool and the bike also aggrevates it........Ortho is taking a conservative approach and hoping that PT and some rest will allow me to return to my "normal" level of activity, we'll see.....

I'm doing the Indianapolis Marathon on Oct. 18th in Ft. Harrison on the NE side of Indy. My goal is a 3:15 and this is my first marathon. Training has gone very well and I'm on taper now. I do have some mild tendonitis in my right heel but it's not bothersome while I run. After the marathon I'm planning on swimming more and getting out more on my bike which will hopefullly rest my foot a little...I may take a few weeks off of running.

  • Philly
  • BQ - 3:15:59, 3:31 is my PR on my only (stand-alone) marathon effort but that was 3 years ago
  • Healthy (knocking on wood as I type)
  • Only issue is actually doing it.    Reasonably confident that I can, though "margin for error" is modest so I can't afford to make any big mistakes and will need to be strong both physically & mentally on the day.
  • Will take a few weeks easy with lots of swimming and then begin off-season tri training with bike & run focus.  Maybe run another marathon for "fun" in April.

Silicon Valley Marathon 10/26...this will be the 5th time I have run this race.  I am not sure I will actually do it.  My knee bothered me a little bit this weekend while doing the 1/2 mary.

            Goal is to just finish

Cal. International Marathon 12/7...If I can afford this I will do it.

Goal again would be to just finish.

Tucson half mary as training and then a February marathon race (don't know which one yet). Goal is going to be 2:xx hrs, I am sort of healthy (have a weird ankle/calf injury that comes and goes and MDs don't know what it is), post marathon plan: focus on Tri season and get back in killer racing shape.

  • Which one are you doing?

Governor's Cup 1/2M (Cola, SC), then Kiawah Island full in December.

  • What is your goal?

Finish without injury.  I've done lots of marathons, but this will be my first after several knee problems/surgeries.  I'm still nursing it along -- recently had to cut run volume by a lot to avoid injury, and am building back slowly.  Fingers crossed...

  • Are you healthy?
  • Any issues?

No, and yes -- see above.

  • Post marathon plans?

Few weeks off, then start base training for my first IM (IMKY) next fall.  I can't wait!

Good luck on your races, everyone.

Route 66 marathon - Tulsa oklahoma November 16th

Goal is 3:30-3:45 - The thing is i can run 8 min miles FOREVER! Low HR and very lesire pace.  But i just don't know if i'll have the endurance to hold that for 26.2.  I have been doing a marathon plan, but not for long.  I didn't start until after my last HIM of the season.

Yep healty.

Chicago, this Sunday!

What is your goal?
Finish without being completely miserable, this is my first.  I'd be happy with anything under 6:00 for now at least.

Are you healthy?
More or less, missed 20 mile run b/c of bad ITB day, but tweaked bike fit and it seems better now.

Any issues?
VERY undertrained(see post marathon plans) because my training plans changed in August.  Longest run was 17-ish and I'm not thrilled about that, but it's my first and I'm doing it mainly to finish a marathon before next years IM.

Post marathon plans?
Clearwater 70.3 in November and possibly a Thanksgiving Half for fun.  Then REST!

I was supposed to do Philly, but now I'm doing the Philly Half, as an old injury kept me from increasing my mileage as much as I wanted to do.

I'm going to try for the Philly full again next year.

Good luck to everyone!

  • Which one are you doing?
  • California International, Dec. 7. It's my first.

  • What is your goal?
  • Main goal is just to finish (and finish happy). Not-so-secret goal is sub-4. Based on several other races this year I'm right on the line for a sub-4 finish. Yikes!

  • Are you healthy?
  • So far so good.

  • Any issues?
  • Not really. I had some nutrition problems in a half yesterday, but I've still got lots of time to work that out.

  • Post marathon plans?
  • I haven't decided yet -- it depends on how much (or whether) I enjoy the marathon. Assuming I have fun and do well, I'll train for another in 2009. If I don't have much fun, I might pick some shorter races and work on improving at those. Either way, I'll be running focused and work on bumping up my weekly mileage to build a solid base.

I'm going to try my first half marathon this winter.  The Miami Marathon in January.

Primary goal is to finish with a smile on my face and feeling good.  Thinking it will probably be in about 2.5 hrs.

I think I'm healthy - I could lose a few pounds but love my wine and cheese too much

No issues - I have 17 weeks to prepare - the longest distance I've run to date is 4 miles so that might pose an issue but taking it slow and gradual.  We'll see...

Post plans are to start getting ready for spring tri season.  Have only done mini-sprints to date and this summer really want to go for something more challenging.

Neat thread to read!   Thx & good luck to everyone! (Advice & suggestions welcome!)

    My goal is sub 2:00:00

It will be my first half and if all goes well I'll move up to a full in 2009.
