Subject: What is your resting heart rate?
I was just at the doctors getting checked out because of my accident and the nurse that took my heart rate made the comment: "DAMN! That's Low" as he wrote it down.  I had been training based on 60bpm, which is what I thought it was based on a few months ago when I wore my HRM all the time since it was a new toy.  After I got up and grabbed my stuff to leave the doctor was still in the room with the clipboard, so out of curiosity I asked him what the nurse had written down since he never said.  He told me 48bpm and I was in shock at told him I thought it would be around 60.  So the doctor then took my wist and said, yeah, about right you're at 52bpm right now.  When I mentioned I've been training for a HIM he said, "Yup, that would do it".

Which got me thinking.  I'm not the fastest AGer, but I'm MOP, my running pace is only like 8min/miles, and I can't quite seem to hold the wheel of "the fast guys" for any extended period of time when on group rides.  I figure it's my lungs that are holding my VO2 max down, but that's a different topic to start.

So what's your resting heart rate? Have you seen a correlation between it and how you've done in your tris over the years?

I haven't done mine for a while, but I wanted to add that your "real" resting heart rate would even be lower.   Having gotten up, gone to the dr's office, walked around, etc., you've already raised it.  Try taking it when you first wake up while still in bed.

Yes you're right, I guess I'm referring to ambient heart rate at that point.

It really doesn't matter.

Mine is only in the 50's.  But my top is right around 202 or so.  And I'm 38 years old.

You have a certain range that you can work within.  Sometimes that range is skewed more towards higher numbers, sometimes lower.  Just depends on your genetics and your participation in some form of athletics through your life.  I run 5k's at 190+ bpm.  Others can't even hit that after running as hard as possible up 10 flights of steps.

Yep. My resting HR when I first wake up in the morning is anywhere from 42-60. If its at the high end of that range, I know I've been pushing hard lately and need to back off a bit. Average RHR during the day is usually around 50-54.

Heh. Went to the asthma doc tuesday and the nurse took my BP at 162/84. HR of 75. The doc retook it at 122/64, hr of 58. Figured she put the cuff on herself by mistake. :D

Generally in the mid to high 50s. It's low enough for them to get concerned when I give blood, but high enough to still qualify.

I did notice that it was 72 yesterday afternoon after suiting up for my ride and getting ready to start. Really didn't take long for me to get it higher...

I expected the same result when I was in for a physical a few months ago.  Curiously, the nurse told me I was at 48bpm sitting up on the end of the exam table.  I check mine all the time when I first wake up and it hardly ever varies from 51-53bpm.  I have also checked it seated at my desk and verified the nurse's rate.  I expected that my rate would be lower in the horizontal position than the seated position, but for some reason, I am slightly lower seated.  Go figure.

I've seen 38, but its usually in the low 40's....Really it only matters to watch the trend. If its high in the morning (for you) you want be carry extra fatigue or your body is trying to fight something off.

Mine is 52. I'm also a 'fast beater' as my max (for cycling) is 192, and I'm 50.

If I read your post right, you set your training zones based on this resting heart rate? I've never heard that one before, please explain...

I just got a Garmin 305, and I thought it would be fun to check my resting heart rate.  The result was so low I assumed my new HRM was broken.

But when I re-checked it on the old one, I got the same result.

My resting heart rate these days is 43.  I'm wondering if I can get it down below 40 with 6 more months of training.  :-)

the bear - 2009-08-26 3:14 PM If I read your post right, you set your training zones based on this resting heart rate? I've never heard that one before, please explain...

Karvonen formula
Heartrate = ((Max HR-Resting HR)*X/100)+Resting HR

where X is your target zone... So aiming for 80% for me would be ((190-48)*80/100)+48 = 161.6
bom.  Really only about a 3bpm difference compared to a Resting HR of 60, so not a huge difference granted.

But when training, since I can't afford a power tap and I'm still trying to build my heart/lung capacities, I do train with my HR in mind and that's an easy formula to give me a basis of how hard I'm pushing myself.

I was in my doctors office the other day and mine was 44. Usually a bit lower as a doctor's office is not the most relaxing place to be.

Easy, but in most cases incorrect. The experts may chime in, but consensus is that you'd be a lot better testing for your lactate threshhold heart rate and using that to set your training zones, than using a formula.

What's even funnier, I was there for high blood pressure! Oh, well I guess that's not funny. Ok, it was ODD?

I wear my HR monitor to bed every month or so.  Laying down first thing in the morning (before the alarm clock), I'm at 36 bpm.  Just sitting here I'm at 47 bpm.  So far, I've maxed out at 203 bpm on the run and 196 bpm on the bike.  I'm 42.
