Subject: Least favorite things to hear during a race.
I was just thinking back to some of the longer races I've done and thought about the worst things I've heard.

My least favorite thing to hear is `You look GREAT!' Sorry but you are a liar. I look like I went 10 rounds with Tyson, got hit by a truck and then rode a boat under the Dave Mathews Band tour bus. I remember at Redman HIM last year about mile 12 someone said that to me and I responded with `You and I both know that's not true.' Then I felt kind of bad about saying that.

I don't like to hear the "come on, pick it up, only a half-mile to go!"  - just don't like the "pacing" comments but prefer the basic cheering/clapping and "way to go" comments.

Why pick the Dave Matthews Band's bus and not Beyonce's, or some other hawt girl singer's?  Does the particular band's bus really matter?  HUH? HUH?  Does it?  You couldn't just state "a touring bus", could you?  Noooooo, you had to identify a specific band's bus.

I like to comment when someone gives me the "you look great" comment. I say that to a lot of people in races as well, that and keep smiling ....... this is supposed to be fun!

I worked the T2 exit last year at Musselman and my favorite line to give people was " 0.1 miles down and 13 to go!!! You look great!!"

How about this as you hear someone coming up behind you "I think I'm going to puke!!"

I've got to agree with the "Looking Good/Great" when I'm plodding through at about 2 min/mile slower than I should be on a run. If I were looking good/great run you would see gazelle-like grace and a smile, not me swearing at myself and stumbling like I came out of the bar at 2am.

"You're almost there!"  It's usually a lie and there's a lot left to go.  Or at least it feels like a lot to go.  This is acceptable to say if I can see the finish line or it's less than a mile.

From spectators:  "Almost There!"  Unless it's less than 30 yards, shut up and run it yourself.

From bike:  "ker-clunk."  That was the chain falling off due to my learning the hard way how not to gear on uphills.  Twice in the same race.  (I had gotten a new bike shortly before the race, and had not ridden that bike in hills...)
