My brother in law asked me this last weekend after finishing Austin (my first HIM).

FWIW I thought the marathon was harder. Even though I really wanted to say the half iron was harder!

Marathon by far.  I recover from a HIM way faster than a marathon when I've left it all on the course.

Depends. How efficiently did I train, what were the conditions and course, what were my goals, etc.

I've done a number of both (8 or 10 half irons and 5 or 6 marathons) and each one was completely different.

The training for a full marathon is harder IMO, but the actual race I thought the 70.3 was tougher.  I've only done one 70.3 but the heat during the run made the race much harder than a marathon in my opinion.  Not only was the race run in the late summer but the run takes place in the afternoon.  Running in 85-90 degrees with no shade made the race very tough.  While all marathons I have run have been in 40-60 degrees.

Marathon, seriously?  Holy cats, I am never going to be able to survive a marathon.  Everything about the HIM was hard - training, racing, recovering.

This question is usually asked at least once a year here on BT (so if you're curious you can use the search function to see previous answers/opinions).  I think for a very strong runner, who struggles with the bike and/or swim, the Half Iron might be more difficult.  I consider myself farily balanced in each of the 3 disciplines and it's a tough call.  I've run one Marathon, done two HIMs and will run my 2nd marathon in about 2.5 weeks.  I felt better the last 6 miles of my last HIM run than I did in my only marathon so based on that I say the marathon is harder.  But that also depends on pace, bike fitness etc.  So I guess I'll know a little more in 2.5 weeks.

Pretty interesting thread! I've done one marathon (attempted two, but failed the second after 34km due to poor nutrition during the run), and it was tough as all hell. You really learn something about yourself after 35km!

For me, the HIM because I can survive a plain old running race a lot easier than the combo of all 3.  For a marathon, I start feeling fatigue only after mile 15/16.  For the HIM, by mile 5 of the half marathon, I'm near dying.

Depends on who it is.

Marathons hurt more in the end, but HIMs take longer and I run slower!

I've only done 2/3 of a HIM but thought the marathon was more difficult/painful. Also training for a marathon, while I put in less hours a week than HIM training, seemed more difficult. Didn't help that the start of my marathon was 17 degrees.

I used to get confused by the conventional wisdom on this when I started out. But now that. I finished a 70.3, I get it. I know I could do another HIM next weekend. I cannot say the same about doing a marathon. Of course it is all in what you train for, but I think the underlying assumption is that hard means how hard on our body and how difficult to be ready for. Marathon training may look "simpler" as it is all running, but I know I'm not ready for 26.2 yet.

A runner and ultramarathoner friend who transitioned to tri did say HIM is easier than a full marathon. I think it would be the same for full IM vs 100+km ultra marathon events.

For me, properly trained for both, a marathon is harder.

That's why I like them .

HIM PR: 6 hours
Marathon PR: 3:50

and the marathon was WAYYY harder, hurt more, and required a longer recovery time

Having done 2 HIMs and 3 marathons, I would say the marathon is harder for me...and it's not even close.

If you told me right now that you would pay for my entry and all expenses to race in 4 HIMs on 4 consecutive weekends, and all I had to do was finish...I'd probably do it.

Give me the same offer for 4 consecutive marathons...no effin way.  I wouldn't even do it if it was 4 marathons in 4 months.

I'd argue that a marathon is harder than an IM. I just hurt more in the last few miles of an open marathon than in a HIM or IM. A HIM or IM is all about pacing properly. In a marathon you are racing just under your LT, and the pounding on your legs and the pain in your quads is much greater. I have to walk down stairs backwards for 2-3 days after a marathon. After a HIM I can walk around fine, and it's an overall sore feeling.

That being said, I'm going into that 'pain cave' in just a few days if the NYC Marathon doesn't get canceled.

I'm a strong runner, and have done at least ten marathons, but would have to agree that a marathon feels harder for me. Of course, I've only done one HIM, but I did pretty much leave it all out there, and even so, I felt that the HIM training was easier on my body, and recovery (at least the length of time when one really feels like crap) was considerably shorter. As for the race itself, probably equally as tired in the last few miles, but it was more of an overall fatigue better distributed among different muscle groups. owing to the different demands of swim/bike/run. Caveat being that I have a very good sense of pacing for long events--I've rarely started too fast in a marathon, never overcooked the bike in a tri, and have almost always had strong finishes for my ability. I think a HIM run could easily become a death march if one biked much too hard, or started the run too ambitiously for one's fitness. In that case it might be a hard as, or worse, than a marathon.

I'm surprised with all the marathon is harder responses. I've ran 10+ marathons and never trained for any of them specifically and always recovered the next day without a problem.

Here's one perspective.  Next spring I'm going to do two HIMs two weeks apart, and I'm considering a third a week later.  Yes, this will be difficult.   (I've done several HIMs, including some in close proximity -- I have some idea what I'm in for.)

There is no way in Hades I would consider doing the same with a marathon.  Not a chance.  12 weeks between marathons would probably be the minimum for me.

X2...any race where you fall apart is harder than the race you didn't.

Yup, marathon is wayyyy physically harder than the half ironman, despite the HIM being a longer race. I've done a bunch of marathons, and I'd say for me, the marathon is more than 2x harder both to train for and to race.

I am surprised by he responses. I have done one of each and e training for the HIM was wayyy harder and more physically and mentally challenging. Recovery wasn't too bad for either. The most painful thing was the loss of my toenails. I should say I only run 3 days a week during marathon training g and 9 workouts a week for HIM Big difference. Not sure what I want to do next. Another marathon or another HIM. Depends on the support from my hubby.

I was surprised at how easy the HIM was.....and I was surprised, 6 weeks later, at how hard the marathon was.  I was never sore after the HIM and was hitting it again in 2 days.  Like someone else said, I couldn't walk down stairs for 4 days after the marathon.  Maybe the marathon was harder because it was just 6 weeks after the HIM.....who knows?  Both are fun.
