I think it's good you're paying attention to the number of strokes you're taking, because a lower count means a stronger stroke, but don't neglect cadence either. Cadence is important in swimming too. As a suggestion, try alternating one swim (50 yard? ) where you're working on your stroke count, and one where you're working on a higher cadence (not thrashing, but faster than you normally turn it over ). Don't worry about keeping perfect form on the cadence training, if you did it would be called "sprinting". I always felt like this was a whole new way of training for those muscles, and could always feel the benefits in my races. At the end of the day, you want to have strong, powerful strokes, but also a rapid turnover. Good luck!
