Spokes - 2008-07-28 1:29 PM With no Astana, its like keeping Bill Walsh out of the Superbowl. Levi or Contador SHOULD have been on podium on Paris.  Perhaps I'm parochial, but as an American, with no remaining competitive Americans left in the race, I could care less (shrug). And finishing anything less than 3rd - a 'good placing' on GC is meaningless. No one remembers who placed 5th, or 12th, etc.

People rarely remember 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

I thought it was a good showing for the US.  Team Columbia & Garmin had strong showings and Christian held his own out there.  In the post-Lance era, that is nothing to shrug your shoulders at.

VDV was 5th

Columbia, an American team (yeah, I know, has some foreign riders), won 5 of the 21 stages.

I think for only having what, 4 Americans out of 170-80 riders?  we did better than I though we would

Oh, and you missed some great team tactics by CSC, especially on L'Alpe.......  The old bait and switch and the aussie fell for it (or couldn't do anything about it)

I hadn't planned on watching it either due to the exclusion of Astana but it wasn't long before I was glued to the TV hour after hour each day.

It's a real shame that Astana weren't there as it meant that some of the worlds best riders were not competing but it was still a great race.

I won't watch anything CSC - Riis was a cheater.

Interesting position given you're cheering for Astana.....who's team was sent home last year and excluded this year because of doping practices and just sacked a team member for abnormal levels.

The logic fails. Astana isn't an "American" team. 2 of the 24 riders on their team page are "American".
http://www.astana-cyclingteam.com/Rider_Overview.aspx

Really, the ASO made this decision, rightfully so IMHO b/c they were embarrased by Vinokourov. He's gone, but the managment is still there. Hurt the sponsor; that's where the real punishment will come into play. It'll also encourage good sponsors to keep an eye on their investment. Columbia (Highroad), CSC and Chipotle have it right. I applaud Barloworld for immediatley terminating their sponsorship and actually, Saunier-Duval for pulling out the whole team. I kept watching Liquigas thinking that they no longer belonged there. The 8 others are allowed to continue? Tell that to Marion Jones' teammates...

Tough titsies for you bud, you missed a really good Tour de France!  By the way, it's the Tour de France, not the American Tour, so why the concern????  There was only one Canadian rider, Ryder Hesjedal, and I watched it all the way through.

Me too.  I did get into the Bacardi commercial.  I want to be at that party!!

I thought this TdF was the most exciting in many years.  It wasn't all about Lance. (who I admire) It also wasn't all about Bruneel (who is amazing).

I do wish they would bring back the Team Time Trial.  It does favor the stronger teams but so what?  The whole race requires a strong team.

I've got to agree here. I long for the day the TTT is re-introduced. No rider can win without a strong team (just ask Cadel Evans) and the TTT is another way of 'mixing it up'.

I also liked the fact that there were no time bonuses this year. That evened things out too.

Well your loss really. It was a great race and the cleanest one for a long time. Just the fact that there were 6-10 guys on more or less the same level was testament to that.

As for the whole 'I don't watch any CSC, Riis was a doper" thing. It's just plain silly. So Bruyneel was a BELGIAN cyclist in the 90s. Do you seriously believe that he was racing clean? Come on. At least Riis confessed, when it became obvious that him preaching anti doping and having one of the strictest internal anti doping programs seemed a little ridiculous without his confession.

The Barloworld over the cliff crash or the Gerolsteiner rider hitting the road furniture were damn scary. I still wonder if there's a Bianchi down the cliff somewhere; don't think that bike ever stopped. I can't imagine climbing out of there is carbon fiber soled bike shoes.

Cavendish was extrordinary. Really, he made all the other sprinters look like beginners.

As I've said before, if the French actually HAD a rider/riders capable of winning their own race, and those riders were on Astana, Astana would not have been banned. You can put down 20 euros on that, man. Problem is, there are NO French riders good enough to ride for Bruyneel.

OMG, two in one thread, dude you are on fire! please, stop! you are making me ROTFLMAO!
