Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My wife and I were just discussing this. The medical insurance for my family and I provided thru the company I work was completely paid for by the company in 2000. Now, I'm paying $245/month for the family. I still consider this pretty cheap. What do you pay for insurance for your family? Or for yourself?

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ours is mostly paid for by work as well. My husband and I discovered it is cheaper for each of us to pay for our own insurance. So we pay about $800/yr each for medical, I pay $90/yr for dental (he got the free plan), and I think I added on the premium vision plan @ $16/yr. He has good eyes. This will all change someday with a kid in the picture, but for now it works great! |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Right now, I pay nothing for medical/dental/vision insurance for myself. On 1/1/2009, I will start paying $90/month for medical insurance. Dental/vision will continue to be free. The health care coverage is one of best perks of my job, besides the pension plan. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We got very lucky, and with Pat's insurance, we don't pay. It is included in his salary (or I guess in addition to, since it is not subtracted from his wages) . Pat's boss is a sort of evangelist for health care coverage, having grown up in Pakistan and seen how much health care impacts the life of a family, and the life of the worker. He is a very smart man, who cares very much about the connection between productivity and happiness of the worker, and he's told us man times that people worrying about the cost of medications and insurance are not able to work to their full potential, so as a business owner, it makes economic sense to him to pay for it (and use it as a recruitment tool). Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We're both self-employed, so it's not cheap. We pay about $600/month for me, my husband, and our 2 year old daughter. Deductible is $2,000, but the insurance covers office visits and shots for our daughter (which was important when she was a baby). I'm thinking of changing to a cheaper plan though, now that she's older - I'm still having to pay out of pocket for blood tests (on a regular basis since I have thyroid issues), and I'm wondering why I pay so much for so little. Might as well have a plan for more catastrophic events and save some $/month. I miss the days when I had a corporate job and paid $50/month. Well, no, I don't - hated the job - but I sure wish our healthcare system was a bit more friendly to us self employed types! |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wife is a teacher and I am self employed so we pay nothing. One benefit of working for Uncle Sam, he seems to take care of his own peeps. Also love the medical rider they provide. 37 times a year I can get a chiropractic adjustment and a hour massage for....$0. Can't beat that! |

Unfortunately, we have been in a hiring freeze since September. We do have openings, but nobody can fill them. Oh, and I didn't add that I could continue to have free medical insurance on 1/1/2009, if I changed to the HMO plan that is offered. My costs are from staying with the PPO plan. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The thought of having to pay out of pocket for something as essential as healthcare is mind boggling to me. Mind you, over 35% of our salary goes to taxes...

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We pay $67.72 every 2 weeks. That covers both of us. We have a High Deductable plan and they (Aetna) put in $300/month into an account for us to use towards medical expenses. We took the gamble that we would be ok for the first year and then they basically have paid the deductable. It also includes free physical every year, all of Nan's girly stuff, 2 dental cleanings and x-rays, $300/yr for glasses and a free exam. All of this is FREE and included. If you're healthy, take a look at a HHD plan. I was uncertain at first and it's pretty good. It even covered Nan going to the dermatologist for her hands. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am self employed but able to participate in a group health plan because of some professional memberships. The plan I have for my family costs us $2200 per quarter which is on the high side, but it is a great plan. I have virtually no other out of pocket expenses (except for Birth Control pills! Viagra would be free, but birth control we have to pay for...go figure) |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Overall, our isurance went up about $200.00 per month, to about $647.00. In the process, we lost our compny paid life insurance, went to a lesser dental plan, and a higher deductable on the health insurance. We had a company rep come in and was pushing a plan that I'm sure we'll see more of, the Health care Savings account (HSA) that carries a 3000.00 deductable and then pays out only as much as we have saved up in our account. This year, the company is gracius enough to give those selecting this option $1000.00, placed into the HSA. Ye-Ha! Doug |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think what you're paying is inexpensive. IF we took the insurance through his company it would be upwards of $700/month. They'll only pay for dental. We are insurance-less, choosing to pay outright for Doc visits for Toddleator, and anything else. Barring anything tragic (knock on wood) we're OK. I tried to get gap insurance, but my husband makes too much $$. What's F^*#d up is that IF he gets laid off, then we could get full benefits along with the welfare. Howzat for screwy? It feels as if we're punished 'cause he makes too much money. Edited by AdaBug 2008-12-28 5:38 PM |

I could never go uninsured like that. something catastrophic could wipe you out. id pay the $700/month and wouldn't think twice...what about disease specific polices that cover certain conditions that are crazy expensive to treat....something? |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been paying over $500.00 per month for health, dental, and vision through COBRA. Starting in January I'll be paying $360 a month, but with a much larger deductible ($2,500) and less coverage. My GF has the same plan that I'm going on. Basically we're covered well enough that if anything serious happens we should be able to avoid bankruptcy. It's the little things that we'll likely just deal with as opposed to seeing a doctor. scott |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think we pay $40 per month for a High deductable plan. Basically we pay the first $3000 in costs, prescription and otherwise, and after that they pay 100%. Even if we paid the $3000 and the $40 per month, we'd come out better than insuring through my company where the monthly fee is $345 per month. Plus we started a health care flexible spending account so that any money we do spend we can be reimbursed tax free. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Zip, zilch, nada, zero. Well, unless you count blood, sweat, tears and being deployed as cost I remember complaining as a single guy that medical wan't really a benefit I counted since the most I used it for was tylenol when I had a hang over. Then I got married and had a wife with cancer that went through Chemo and Radiation therapy, had an extreme premie and three knee surgeries. Now it is at the top of my bennies list. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have the cheapest medical insurance provided by my employer. *Knock on wood* I very rarely get sick or go to the doctor / hospital. In fact, I didn't use my insurance once in 2008. I pay ~$30 a month. If/when kids enter the picture....no more cheapo insurance. ![]() |
