I have a 12-27 as I'm getting ready to do IMCDA and want the extra gear for the hills.

50/34

12/15

I can produce the needed watts with this gearing choice.

11-28... more than enough for the uphills and gives me that 11 gear for the downhills! Was going to go with a 12-27 since I live in the foothills of the mountains but feel like the 11-28 is more versatile since I get that 11 gear. FWIW, I use the 11 gear more than I do the 28, which is only needed on very steep, long climbs.

11/23 for the flats on the Shimano WH-R550s
12/27 for the hills on the Easton Vista SLs
53/39, 172.5 on my '06 S32 Felt

Technically you're asking what is the spread of the cassette. The gear ration would be the ration of the cog in the front to the cog in the back. Like on my single speed mtb I run a 34-20 or a 1.7:1 (yeah, I know ima p@ssy). There would be a different ration for each combination on a geared bike.

The cassette on my cross bike is a 12-27. On my soon to be finished tri bike, 12-25.

Tri-bike:  175 cranks, 39/53 chainrings, 12-21 (old) and 12-25 (new) clusters, 650C tires.  (45-107 and 38-107 gear-inches respectively)

Road bike:  172.5 cranks, 36/50 chainrings, 11-23 cassette, 700C tires.  (41-120 gear-inches).

Why?  Because that's what came on the bikes.  I did opt for a lower gear option since I'm doing IMCdA in 2 1/2 weeks.

11-23 for training.

11-21 for racing.

175 length crank with a 53/39 on the road bike.  177.5 length crank with 53/39 on the tri bike.

Because that is just how I roll.

12-25 because that's what it came with.  I'm debating on going with a 12-27 or an 11-26 as I could use an extra tooth or two for my morning commute.

Usually a 12-25 and occasionally a 12-27 with a 39/53.  Considering a 11-28 for the next HIM.  Very steep up and down.

I tossed in my 11-34 just to mess with everyone   (also frequent 10-20% climbs)

I have a triple front with 53/42/30.  The bike originally came with a 11-23 rear.  After riding my area, which has some good hills, I found I wanted more than the 30 front/23 back combo.  So I swapped it out with a 12-27.   A much better fit for this area.  There are many instances when I do use the 30 front/27 back (1.11:1 ratio).  And I still wouldn't mind a touch more for some seriously steep parts, but I can get through with it.    I'm satisfied with the 27 as the biggest on the back.  I do miss having smaller than 12.  I'm going to look into getting an 11 for the back on my next cog purchase.

50/34 with a 11-23.  I've got an 12-27 on a set of wheels I keep on my road bike (also with 50/34) because there are actually some good hills around if I go looking for them.

I'm rolling with a 13-25 on the TB these days with 53/39 chainrings and 175mm crankarms.  Use to have a 12-23 for use on the pancake coastline but decided last year to go over and ride the hills of central FL and I needed at least a 25 for some of the 7-10% grades.  The 25 was just enough for me, for longer steep hills and I'd have to revamp the cassette and/or go with a compact and 12-25.  I went with the 13 because I hardly ever used the 12 on the old cassette and wanted to keep the tight spacing on the seven (13-19).  39/14 gives me 22mph at 100 rpm and 53/13 is 33mph at 100 rpm, on good hills I can keep accelerating by tucking in tight.

12-27

For the Texas hills (read: Wind) and for the real hills in SD.

Now that I live in FL it's just a carry over and not worth switching since I am not top gear limited.  But if I buy a new bike next year I probably will not have a 27 on it.  Must stop using crutch.

I have compact crank 50-34 and many different cassettes: 11-23, 12-23, 12-25, 12-27, 11-28, and 11-34. I change the cassette to match terrain I'm riding.

2 sets of 12-27 (mavic aksiums and hed3s) and 12-25 came on the road bike.

The 12-27 cuz I am a fat azz that likes to ride hills (and have needed it in every one of my HIMs).  12-25 evens out, since the roadie is a bit lighter and easier to ride in hills, i don't miss the 27

12-27 because I'm a wuss.

Last year, I was running a 12-25 on 650C wheels. Got my new bike with 700C wheels and went with a 12-27 because that's what most of the girls that I am racing against use. (I do have different cassette for different races though, but mainly use 12-27.)

I've been doing most of my training with 11-23 but just yesterday I switched to a 12-25 for racing and because I am heading to LP for a trainig camp (I added a 12-27 to my road bike as I will climb Whiteface mtn). I rarely am on the 11 unless I am going down the hill and gear out  so I don't think I'll miss it much and a few weeks ago when riding up in NH doing a 100 miler with 7500+ ft climbing not having at least a 25 was not fun. I am going to see which one I'll like better but I think I rather have an extra easy gear to spin more when need it.

Road bike: 53/39 & 12/25.
----------------------------------------
All my rides are hilly. I can stay out of my 39-25 on most rides unless I'm super tired at the end. The last 400' of climbing back up to my house is an 8-10% average grade and it usually destroys me pretty bad. I haven't yet had the guts/strength to switch to an 11/23 but I'd like too.

Tri bike: 54/42 and 11/23.
----------------------------------------
I only ride it here on my flattest route (starting down the hill from my house) which is ~30 miles and 1670' of climbing (and which I PR'd yesterday BTW ). My flat route has more climbing per mile than any of the tri races I do so I'm confident that this gearing will work well racing tris.
