Im doing the same. ...
The thing with Fla 70.3 is the run course. I vowed after doing it the last two years not to return until they change the venue or he run course. 9 of 13 miles is on dirt/grass/weed canal service paths.
The thing with NO 70.3 is its kinda early, in April so most of your large training bllocks would be in Jan and Feb. Im not into doing long rides/run is the cold/rain of Jan/Feb.
That leaves Gulf Coast or Rock-in-Rollman.
Gulf Coast sounds fun, the only catch is the gulf. Will it be calm or rolling seas 2-3 ft.
Rock-in-Rollman has a hilly bike and a few on the run. If im looking to do it just for fun and tune up for the rest of the season, and not chase a PR this might be the way to go.

Talk to the family and make Gulf Coast or New Orleans a long weekend.  Both races are good destinations.  After racing both this year, I am impartial to Gulf Coast because it is closer, half the cost, has a better atmosphere, easier to spectate and probably more fun for the family.  New Orleans is a logistically nightmare because the swim and run are point to point.  I wouldn't sweat the ocean but it will be HOT.  You can't control that anymore than you can control the humidity you will experience in NOLA.  That early in the season, you simply can't be ready for it.

White Lake is also a great race.  In is held on a remote campsite in eastern North Carolina and put on by Setup Events.   All three races are F-L-A-T.

I'll vote for Gulf Coast. It is a great destination. Also very good atmosphere and great volunteers. The only problem is acclimating to the FL heat and humidity after training in relativley cool temps in Georgia in the spring.

Tough call between GC & WL.  The year I did WL it was nice and cool.  This year, IIRC, it was burning up....like GC hot.  So you never know. GC will be hot regardless.  Just race fast and beat the heat.

Personally, I would pick GC--race with friends, free beer at post race party, recovering the next day on the beach.  Nuff said.

I vote for White Lake, but then again I like this race as a smaller crowd. It's a beautiful venue, shouldn't be as hot as Gulf Coast in NC (although it was this year), and you get to sit in the cool lake at the finish line (a nice version of an "ice" bath). It will sell out immediately when registration opens, so this is one you need to decide on before January.

I would never go back to Gulf Coast - even if it was free - but that's just me.

I'm actually considering Beast of the East because I'll be training for Coeur d'Alene.  Not sure if that will conflict with Tour de Cashiers though, which is supposedly on the calendar too.

Ditto - considering BoE as well in route to CdA. I think May 10 is too late for our HIM or at least that is what my tri friends tell me.

At some point we'll have to get your CdA folks hooked up with the 3 of us in Johns Creek that are going.

I did White Lake (May 5th) the same year I did CDA and didn't have a problem.  IMO, it was perfect timing.  The point of the HIM tune up is primarily to dial in your nutrition and otherwise mentally prepare you.  Any of the races (flat or hilly) can do that.

I forgot about BoE.  I think I'm going to do the Macon 1/2 IM in prep for CDA. I've heard it's a hilly bike course- hopefully good prep for CDA!

If you want hills to prepare for CDA, then go with Beast of the East HIM. That bike course is nonstop hills, then a hilly run. The temp is perfect that time of year up in North GA.

Don't forget about the new Rev3 half-distance race in Knoxville, TN on Sunday May 9th (http://www.rev3tri.com/knoxvilleComingSoon.htm) ... given the $50,000 prize purse, it stands to provide excellent competition to both Gulf Coast and, since an Oly is schedule the day before, St. Anthony's as well.

The only draw back for me is that it is Mothers Day weekend ... and anything othe than loving on Mom during the course of the entire weekend os typically is taboo in our household.

Thanks for the heads up.  I'veheard that Rev3 is putting on some great races and I didn't know they added one to Knoxville.  I also noticed they have an Oly there.

Harvey, you'll eventually do both races. Do GC first, and do WL the following year.

I really liked GC. VERY well run race. The run is hot, but given how fast you run at least you won't be out there for that long. What's 1:30 of suffering when you can relax at the beach for 2-3 days after?

i realize this is a spring 70.3 thread and not a rev3 thread, but what do you all think?

Let's face it,  most of us are never going to qualify for Kona.  I know.  It's tough to handle.   With that in mind you have to question what the Ironman brand is offering the average age grouper.  Here is what I want from an Iron Distance race:

-No Hiccups.  I didn't train 15 hours a week for six months for their to be no water at an aid station or any other surprises.

-Cool Schwag.  I want a cool shirt.  I just did 140.6 miles and I want a cool shirt!  No lame designs.  I want lots of samples of all sorts of stuff.  I want to feel like a kid on Christmas morning going through the loot in my stocking.

-Fun for the family.  My reward for all that training is to race.  They need a reward for putting up with all that training.  Make it easy for them to catch a glimpse of me and give me encouragement and have a festival atmosphere for them to enjoy.

Rev3 is claiming that they will focus on these things and folks have really raved about their first race.  I hope they make it work.
