Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 3 IMs - used bike special needs all three times, used run special needs once. BSN - had replacement bottles of Infinit (frozen) that I used, also had two inner tubes with C02 that I never had to use. RSN - always had a long sleeve shirt and socks in it. This year I grabbed the long sleeve shirt and was extremely happy to have it. Made up for the previous 2 years of not getting a shirt back. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Packed them both and got asprin out of my run special needs bag. SN bag "return" is pretty chaotic. I did dig around and found both of them, but not without poking around in lots of sticky ugly boxes/bags. IMO, this is probably the one area NAS/WTC didn't do well. Don't put things in them that you really want back. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had back up nutrition in my bike special needs. Saved the day. I needed more Infinit than I had planned on using. I had an extra pair of socks and gel in my run special needs. Changed socks to not get blisters (also carried a travel sized Body Glide) and grabbed my extra gel. I made sure nothing was left in my special needs bags and I was told I would not get anything back. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had refills of my liquid for the bike and also spare tubes and co2. Had more hammer gels for the run and socks and long sleeved shirt. Didn't get anything back. Used the liquid and gels. Didn't need the rest of the stuff but liked having it available. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Didn't turn in a SN bag on the bike. Only used a run bag because I was injured going into the race and needed to pack supplies to re-tape my hamstring if necessary. Turned out to be the best move I made all day: Wouldn't have been able to finish without stopping to wrap the hammie tighter midway through the run. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I kept a spare tubie in mine with some C02 in case I had a flat and wanted to pick up an extra spare. Ironic in that at IMAZ I did flat, early in the race, but never stopped to get the extra spare. Took likely a stupid chance there. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In my latest Ironman, IMCDA, I used both of them. I had an extra bottle of Infinit in my bike bag as well as a spare tube and CO2. I only needed the Infinit. I put a long sleeve shirt in my run bag and ended up using that as it was in the upper 40's lower 50's for the race. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If I had it to do over again (and I guess I do: May 1st at St. George), I'd have added a long sleeve shirt to my run bag. Didn't expect to be on the run course after sunset, but ended up that I was for a short time...second half of last lap of three as the sun was dropping started to get chilly in just a tri top. Still warm enough that I didn't really think about it at the time, but it would have been an issue if it was Utah in early May instead of Sonoma County in early August. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No special needs for me. I'm a low maintenance, live off the land sort of guy. Not using 'special needs' bags means one less thing to worry about. If it were up to me, and IM course would provide a water/gatorade station at the 1/2 way point on the bike and every 5 miles on the run. BTW, the term "special needs" makes me grin. ;-)

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() From the IMKY 2010 Athelete guide: Special Foods Bags
Special foods stations will be located near the mid-point of the bike and run course. The special foods stations are for special nutritional purposes only. I know a lot of people ignored this rule and put all kinds of 'special needs' in their bags that were not for nutritional purposes only. Personally I don't care what anyone puts in their bags cuase I'm not much of rule follower but it amuses me when I hear people getting all self-righteous about following the rules and then rationalizing away this rule.
BTW, I don't think the other Ford IM events have this same rule but I don't really know.

~Mike That's fine for nutrition, but any extra equipment you can put in special needs and not carry on the bike are good. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have done 2 IM. With both I had extra tube and CO2 in my bike SN as well as a meal replacement shake. I only used the meal replacement shake. The rule on the race I did was that if you did not take it or use it you loose it. Depending on what it was it goes to a charity or sports development team. On the run I only used a SN in my first IM. I had a long sleeve shirt in it and was very glad for it. In my second IM I looked at the weather forecast and the temperature was max at 39 degree's Celcius for the day so did not think a long sleeve shirt would be necessary. I was right. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used both at IMFL, my only IM (so far). In the bike special needs, I had an uncrustable and a small bottle of coke, as well as refills on gels and Endurox. I stuffed my arm warmers in there (my tri top's pockets are just too small for something that bulky). Had no problems finding and retrieving the bag the next morning. For the run, since I wasn't sure how cool the night would get, I put both a long and short-sleeved shirt in the bag, plus some Tylenol. At the turnaround, grabbed the bag, took out the short-sleeved shirt and Tylenol, and handed the bag and my hat to my hubby as I passed him, so didn't have to worry about going back for that. It worked great for me. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I only had one frame bottle on my bike. So in order to have enough bike nutrition I had to have a second bottle in my bike special needs. Now, being a Type A planner, I had a zippy bag full of powdered nutrition in my bike jersey just in the off chance that I for some stupid reason could not get my special needs bag. But I was able to stop at special needs and switch bottles so the extra powdered just went into my T2 bag when I got there. I am definitely a believer in planning that you will never get to see those bags. So I ran the entire marathon with a long sleeve shirt around my waist in case it got cold. And of course did the aforementioned zippy bag full of powdered nutrition. Otherwise, all I had in my special needs bags were emergency tubes/CO2, emergency COKE, extra lube, etc. I think my run bag had extra socks and another shirt in case things really went to heck. |

The Original ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For the bike SN I had an extra bottle of Perpeteum that I grabbed. GE doesn't sit well with my stomach so I had to use my own fluids on race day. I also had a spare tubular and CO2 in my bike SN jsut in case I flatted out and needed to get another spare on my bike- thankfully I didn't need them. I also ditched my hat and arm warmers in my bike SN bag. For the run SN I used it to grab a long sleeved running shirt. Looking back I didn't really need the run SN bag. I coud have easily just put the long sleeved shirt in my T2 bag and ran out with it tied around my waist and put it on when I got cold. Definitely keep it simple. I had a crapload of stuff in my bike SN and it took me forever to figure out what I truly needed. I probably stopped too long at bike SN and mentally it was hard to get going being off the bike for anything more than a few mins and also ate an uncrustable. I also stopped and peed behind a tree as well. Yes- I pretty much had a picnic at the bike SN ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My race didn't have any special needs bags but I didn't need anything anyway and wouldn't have stopped. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() I only have experience from one IM so far. I used a second chilled & bubble-wrapped bottle of nutritional mix from my bike sn bag. My secret IM weapon is a peanut butter sandwich on cinnamon raisin bread, half in each sn bag, and I ate those. I had a spare tube and some other odds & ends in the bike bag but didn't need anything else there. Besides a few electrolyte tabs & stuff, I put some bandaids in the run bag, in case of blisters, but didn't need any of that either. A shirt might have been handy in the run bag, and the volunteers offered me a spare, but it seemed borderline for me and I did OK without. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used both and each of them had an orange soda, Snikers bar, Cigarette and lighter. The later made for some really interesting looks from the other competers that were passing me while I was stopped and some memorable moments for the spectators that started taking pictures. Not exactly the typical Ironman special needs bags but thats what made me feel better. I did have a spare tube and co2 in the bike snb and long sleeve shirt and extra socks for the run snb which I did not use. |

To each his own, and if it works, it works! I did see a guy on Ironman live light a cigar before crossing the finish line, which I thought was awesome. |
