I just went to see the John Butler Trio last night & it was one of the most incredible shows I've been to. If he's coming near you I highly recommend seeing him live. What an amazing guitarist (at one point he reversed and was picking strings on the bridge with his left hand and playing chords with his right), great jamming/rocking out and lyrics that actually mean something & all in a small theater with a bunch of friends.

What's the best show you've been to?

Hmmmm, I usually go to smaller bluegrass shows, but I have to say that the best ever would be a tie between Hank Williams Jr and Chris Ledoux. They are both incredible performers with great music and a hell of a stage presence. Those were an awesome shows.

Second best, Open Road. They are a small bluegrass band (but worth seeking out if you like bluegrass) and sing all around one mic. Very traditional sounding music, but just great. Their encore song was this hushed a capella four part harmony gospel song and it was the loveliest thing I've ever heard. Every one in the whole place was just silent....

Rammstein because the lead singer lights himself on fire while singing.  And because at the end of the show he brought out a flame thrower and shot a 25 ft flame over the crowed.  It was awesome!

Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. Seen 'em several times and they're simply amazing musicians.
It's bluegrass jazz fusion...with lots of other stuff, if you haven't heard of 'em.

Yeah, Rammstein ROCKS!! I figure Till must be fairly screwed up by now. Not sure if he cuts himself anymore, but the one show I saw, he was a mess by the end of it...

Bela is great! I haven't had a chance to see him live, but he's definitely on my "before I die" list.

Best small venue concert for me was Keb' Mo' (but seeing Live locally before they hit it big was cool too) - Best arena show would be a tie between Prick/NIN/David Bowie and the first Headbanger's Ball Tour with Exodus/Helloween/Anthrax

Parrothead here......so I have to say Jimmy Buffett.

Haven't seen him this year (yet), but when I do it will be my 25th one since 1986.   All of them were great times.  Going with friends or just going it alone and meeting new friends....it just doesn't get any better than that!!!

For large venue I'd have to say Seal. I also saw Sting a few years back (before I was priced out of the market) and that was a great concert too.

Small venue, saw a band called Calexico on a fluke, they were amazing.

Hard to say for sure; I went to so many rock concerts in my salad days.  It would have to be between The Animals, the Who, Alice Cooper or Steppenwolf.

Well this is a toss up for me. At first I would say Pink Floyd, one of the most unbelievable special effects based concerts ever!. As I was thinking about it the Elton John and Billy Joel, face to face concert was increadible. The only thing keeping it from #1 is that I had a terible migrane and almost did not go. Left before the oncore. Still a great time.

In 1998 I went to Red Rocks in Colorado to see Dave Matthews.  It was my first concert EVER.  It POURED and POURED and POURED!  I didn't know what was better...when it was raining no one was friggin' smoking BAD THINGS.  But as soon as the rain let up...you had to hold your breath....

But I still remember it   AWESOME show!  Despite the rain...

Second best concert (now that I think of it) was seeing Blake Shelton at Billy Bob's in Dallas...big star, 10 feet away, small room...AWESOME!

Drew John's shows are as you said the most incredible live shows!  I have been to many many JBT gigs and everyone has been completely different but yet still blown my mind.

He is one of the most amazing muscicians I have ever heard!  and I love my music so that is a big call for me!

but to answer your question The first ever Ben Harper gig I saw was the best show I have ever seen.  In an open air ampitheatre just out of Perth about 10 years ago I think.  I still get goose bumps thinking about it.

Simon & Garfunkel in Tampa last year during their reunion tour. Stuff that I grew up with in the 60's - still great music.
They had the Everly brothers do a set with them - Bye Bye Love, Wake Up Little Susie, etc.
Packed house and everyone was singing along with every song.

I have a three way tie - Bon Jovi (the Palace - sold out), Tom Petty (outdoor show at Pine Knob), Billy Joel (NYE 2000, Madison Square Garden)

All three shows rocked, and the vibe was just great at every one.

Great thread.

Big venue: tie between Paul McCartney at Foxboro stadium  and any of 14 Rush shows.

Medium venue: Judas Priest, The Scorpions and Def Leppard at the Orphem Theater in Boston. Metal Heaven.

Small venue: any of the Chris Smither shows I've been too.

First concert I saw was Nirvana. Tough to beat that. But then Ryan Adams came along and nothing else has compared since. Whether he's playing with the band or doing an acoustic show, it's great.

Mason Jennings puts on a helluva show too.

Canadian singer/guitarist Bruce Cockburn. The guy is amazingly good and mostly unknown in the states.

Second choice would go to Jethro Tull at the Centrum in Worcester, MA.

I would have liked to seen Chris Ledoux....very sorry to hear of his recent passing

Hmm ... two that come to mind: Sarah McLachlan at Berkelee College of Music in 1994 (her backup singer was just DIVINE) and Ani Difranco at a hole in the wall in Chicago around the same time--Old Town School of Folk, I think it was. Capacity under 100. Great stuff.

If only I could have seen Eva Cassidy before she passed away ...

ARGH....I had the chance to see NIN/David Bowie and I TURNED IT DOWN. How STUPID was that?????
I kick myself to this day for that. *shaking head*

Before I die, I will see David Bowie live.

Oh, I also have to say that seeing the Indigo Girls with Joan Baez on the same stage was pretty freakin cool...I had forgotten about that one but Joan Baez...wow.
