Subject: Bucket of water for T1?
My first tri is in a little over 2 weeks. The swim is in the Gulf of Mexico, then there is a short run up the beach to T1.

Should I place a bucket of water at T1 to wash my feet? I'm sure my feet will be full of sand.

If so, I plan to set up my bike the night before the race. Should I just fill a bucket with water and leave it there overnight? Seems logical, but I don't know what people typically do.

Any other transition tips you have are appreciated. I have read several articles and watched several videos. I plan to do a "run though" of the race on Sat. to practice. I still find the transition part intimidating, though.

I prefer to keep my transition area simple and uncluttered...not only for myself, but for people around me as transition space is usually tight.  Most times when you're running into T1, most of the sand comes off.  Maybe a quick wipe of your feet with a towel may help, but a bucket or pan of water is just something for you or someone else to trip over, or accidentally drop something in that isn't supposed to get wet.

please don't bring a bucket of water.  simple is better.  my transition area has a pair of shoes, a helmet, and a number belt. that's it!

Personally, I would just leave a small towel in T1 and wipe your feet off if you need to (although I know some people do leave some water in a bucket).  

No need to be intimidated.  Try to do a practice run through--whether there or just at home to get used to the things you will have to drop (goggles, cap, etc) and those you need to grab/put on (bike shoes, helmet, sunglasses, etc).  If you are wearing a wetsuit, that is your biggest 'drop' hurdle.  If so, try to start taking it off your upper body as you exit the water and run back to your bike and then get your legs free.  If not, just pull off your cap and goggles as soon as you exit the water and run with them back to your bike.  Toss them onto a towel or something where you have your transition items laid out.  Shoes (and socks if you are wearing them) should be there ready to slip on (have your socks 'rolled' off your foot ready to just stick your toes in and 'roll' back up your foot if you are wearing them) and and any items you are going to throw in your pockets (might be nothing, esp. if a short race).  Easiest thing for helmet is to have it resting on your handle bars with straps hanging over side and sunglasses (if wearing them)inside helmet and already open to just slip onto your face.  Put the glasses on, them the helmet.  Then buckle the helmet and grab your bike and go.  T2 is easier.  Just remember to take off your helmet before you go run!

I agree with the others re: the bucket. However if you think you'd prefer water to clean your feet over a towel maybe opt for a small water bottle to squirt onto your feet. Much more compact/out of the way and you eliminate the risk that it will get kicked over

Please no buckets (full or empty) - there isn't enough space in transition and this could cause issues with other racers as they try to avoid your stuff.

If you want to clean your feet off, bring a small towel and a small water bottle filled with water. Use the water bottle to clean your feet.

The race may also have a baby pool at the swim out to help get the sand off of your feet.

In this tri, they do allow participants to check the bike in on the day prior and they (allegedly) have security. The race begins at 6:30am, so I appreciate having one less thing to do before it begins. But, I will definitely check the set-up that morning. I have read stories about people setting up the night before and returning to find everything in different spots. No bueno!

And seriously, thank you for all the responses. I didn't even think about how tight the transition space will be and how a bucket would be a PITA and potentially get in the way.

Now, if anyone can tell me how not to get stung by angry jellyfish, that would be FAANNTASTIC. I did my first open water swim last weekend and between the waves and the jellyfish, it was an epic failure. I'm on the Gulf Coast. The water is really warm, so no wetsuit planned for the race. I'm going to try again this weekend. If nothing else, just to hopefully get used to being stung and shaking it off.

Anyway, I digress. Thanks again!

most of the races I do are in a costal community so there's always sand.  I've found most of it comes off running through transition.  If you're worried about it in your bike shoes two tips.  1. squirt your feet off with a bike water bottle.  it's small and you can tuck it away when you're done.  watch other peoples equipment if you do this.  2.  Wipe each foot off on your opposite leg while you're putting your helmet on.  Doesn't necessarily get all the sand off but if your feet are caked in sand it will get the bulk off.

I had minimal amount of sand on my feet by the time I got to my bike anyway and just wiped my feet with a towel before I slipped on my socks. I had no issues caused by sand in my socks for the rest of the race.

Here's another clean transition set up that includes a towel to wipe your feet on and socks rolled up to be unrolled right onto your feet.

Definitely keep things as simple as possible.

I have to admit I was paranoid about a single bit of sand or dust on my feet or in my socks. I did not have the bucket, nor the wipes, i was trying to get rid of the sands with a towel, but it didn't work anyway haha and I did not want to waste more time with it. So I just put my socks on and move forward. Guess what - absolutely no issues on neither bike nor run

I set mine up in much the same way......except I put my helmet (glasses inside) on top of my bike shoes....and orient them in line with my bike (one less step - not to have to turn them). I also put my visor and race belt under my shoes and grab them on the way out (pull my race number belt over my head, while running).

Whether it's ocean swim or lake swim, I haven't had any issues with sand on my feet affecting anything. You will likely run through some grass on the way to T1 (and through T1). That'll dispel a lot of it.

Keep a spare water bidon beside the bike.... if you have the need you can always wash feet off with a quick squirt of water. Then quick pat down with towel

The first dozen or so reviews say it works, and it doesn't seem to cost much more than a tube of sunscreen. I'd definitely try it if we had jellyfish in Lake Michigan

Hope they sell SafeSea in Australia next week! I have a genuine jellyfish phobia that has not improved with getting stung all over the face on the swim warmup of IM Vietnam 70.3, nor in the past few weeks--my students have helpfully been researching all about the deadlier varieties.

RE the water bucket--most races I have done that involve a beach run have some kind of water thingie to run through before T1 to get the sand off feet. But maybe that is unique to tris in the ocean, or in Southeast Asia? Not sure I have encountered that in North America, where I think all my races have been lake swims where one generally exits to dirt/grass, not sand. If really worried, you could always park an extra small bottle of water in transition to rinse off your feet.

Are you doing Alabama Coastal by any chance? I've participated the last 2 years and they've always had a small pool just past the mat that you can run through to wash your feet off. Don't sweat it and have fun.

This is great to know! I did a trial run this evening and the sand was not wiping off, I had to squirt my feet with a water bottle.
