Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: Manatees Roar into the 20s! CLOSED Welcome to the 2020 edition of the Manatees. Our motto this year is Dooo Eeettt Better! We are all mentors and mentees, which sounds like manatees--hence our name. Some iteration of this group has been going on for enough seasons and we've lost track of what season we are in! All experience levels and goals welcome. We have soon-to-triathletes, multiple-iron finishers, runners, cyclists and swimming specialists. We range from slow to fast, and beginner to veteran, but most of us are somewhere in the middle of all that. Our training philosophies, gear, objectives and methods are similarly varied. We are very committed to health and to each other. We are an extremely supportive and active group. Inactive Manatees make us sad so please post to this forum frequently.
We believe the journey is the reward, and look forward to having you as a fellow traveler and a friend. As always, any former Manatees are welcome at any time. To join, please respond to this message and include (or later add) your bio. Please post a brief bio to the thread to introduce or reintroduce yourself by adding information in the format below and/or whatever you'd like to share. NAME: What you're actually called in the real world. OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook, Twitter, Strava or whatever name/handle you use from any other social media site if you'd like us to follow along. STORY: Who you are, why you want to do endurance/multisport, any athletic background FAMILY STATUS: Family situation (single/partnered/family/pets, especially pets) CURRENT TRAINING: If/how you have been training so far THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: If any have been chosen or are on the possibilities list. So far so good! 2030 RACES/EVENTS: Assault on the Carolinas ride GOALS WHAT MAKES ME A GOOD MANATEE: I enjoy supporting my Manatee friends! Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees Roar into the 20s! NAME: Karen OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I'm on Facebook but it's private. You can friend-request me and I will accept if I recognize you as a familiar Manatee! STORY: It's a LONG story LOL! Runner and swimmer since age 10; got into tri around age 40. I've done a lot of events; tend to do mostly half-iron distance. I'm better at endurance but full IM training is difficult with my work situation (elementary teacher) and not so enamored of biking that I really enjoy 6-hour training rides! I have done (I think) a dozen or so HIM; one full IM (Malaysia)in 2018, plus lots of shorter events (mostly tri and aquathlon). FAMILY STATUS: Single; living with Mom (81) and three cats (AKA Crazy Cat Ladies). CURRENT TRAINING: Errr.... This has been the Year that Was". I had great plans as spring/summer was the last half of a "gap year" I'd taken to travel and do some other "bucket list" things with Mom (including my IM) after my dad passed away in early 2018. Breaking my elbow at Challenge Wanaka ("World's Most Scenic Triathlon") was NOT on that list. There went our plans for the next leg of the trip to Australia, a training camp in SoCal, St. George and Hawaii 70.3's (chasing a possible KQ), summer travel, and pretty much anything fun. I spent most of the first half of 2019 in a largely fruitless job search (I finally found a job back in Oregon) and trying to restore range of motion to my elbow despite having a plate and five screws in it. The injury forced me to take almost 3 months off running, 2 months off swimming (and many more months of anything that would really be considered "swim training"), and about a month off biking (on the trainer). So this year has mainly been trainer biking (I think I've ridden outside...twice?), slow swimming with a variety of pool toys, and running once I worked back to it. Run and bike fitness had gotten pretty normal (not back to IM levels, but maybe last year's pre-injury levels) and swim a bit slower and more painful than normal but at least up to HIM distance, then I got sick with a cold/sinus infection two weeks ago. So had to shut training down again to get healthy enough to go through with the second surgery (removal of metalwork). That's done as of two days ago but now am restricted from anything that involves water or sweating for about three weeks (or until incision heals). So no training at present! After that, hoping to gradually build back fitness in all three areas. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: It will really depend on how swimming goes. If the second surgery doesn't resolve most of the discomfort I've been having or I can't wean myself off the pool toys and get to speeds that would allow me to be competitive, I may end up quitting tri, at least for now. My surgeon thinks that getting the metal out will resolve discomfort but there are no guarantees about range of motion or speed. If swimming is going okay, will probably enter at least one summer HIM. Maybe CDA or Calgary or both? And/or Crater Lake Marathon in August. Always my favorite run event but I have not been able to do it for years for various reasons. I wanted to last year but by the time I got around to entering, it was full. Plus maybe some shorter events in Oregon. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: At this point, I would just like to be able to train and compete normally again. Not stressing about long-term goals right now. In the past I was very focused on qualifying for 70.3 Worlds but that would be hard now even with great fitness as it's too close to the start of the school year--I couldn't get leave that early. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Not sure but I enjoy the support of others who have similar passions and challenges. I don't know many triathletes in person and almost always train solo except for occasional group rides (Eugene's a big running town; tri, not so much), so it's nice to have online buddies! |

Member 159 Fairfax, VA | Subject: RE: Manatees Roar into the 20s! NAME: Jen OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I am on facebook, instagram and strava - I am pretty sure I am jenstewey on all of those. STORY: I grew up as a diver through college, and then played coed soccer for about 10 years. I signed up for my first triathlon with some soccer teammates and got hooked. I have finished 1 IM, and have swum 4.4 miles across the Chesapeake Bay. I have a bucket list item to do a half marathon in half the states. I have done 13 states so far (plus DC), but am probably taking a break this year to focus on biking. I am a Systems Engineer for a government contractor. FAMILY STATUS: Single with 2 dogs, Sadie and Mosley CURRENT TRAINING: I am a member of Team Z in the DC area with Laura (manatee). My biggest challenge is finding available pool opportunities. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I am not technically signed up for anything but plan on (1) Williamsburg Half Aquabike, (2) World Championships Aquabike, (3) MiamiMan Aquathlon. I'm sure a few others will get added to the list also. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I am excited that I get to go to worlds this summer and I'm looking forward to iron distance training again (minus the run). My more immediate goal is go stay consistent through the winter so I am ready to go in spring! WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I enjoy hearing about the stories and journeys of all the manatees! ps: My training logs are always up to date, but my office blocks BT (and I don't have my phone during the day) so sometimes it's hard for me to post regularly, but I will try harder! NAME: Nancy Schwertfeger OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook (Nancy Schwertfeger) & Strava STORY: I'm a pushing 50 middle school teacher, wife & dog mom who just enjoys the daily grind of training towards a goal. I'm no world beater, but have been coached by Drive Multisport the last 2 years and have gotten so much better at so many things. In my former life, I was quite an accomplished 3-day event equestrian (which is FAR more expensive than triathlon!). FAMILY STATUS: Married for 14 years, 3 rescue dogs (James, Edward & Zink). CURRENT TRAINING: Currently off season training which involves much more speedwork & power intervals. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I raced my first IM last year, and my husband requested an every other year IM plan, which I felt was a reasonable request. Running a few 10k races and am scheduled for 1 sprint and 2 Olympic tris this spring & summer. Might look at Challenge Daytona the end of the year. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I just love the comraderie & support of being a manatee. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: As above. |

Anyway, the main guy over there wrote, "That is because neither of those have extended analytics and currently BT requires that – the data for those would have had to come in via the Garmin Connect (Sports). I'll reach out to BT and see if they have an alternative for these activities or not." |

Plus, I'm about to be appointed prosecuting attorney for my county and it's an election year and I don't know if I will have an opponent. I won't be able to put anything together until May or November. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Continue to keep my conditioning, and want to be IM fit on 3 months notice, depending on how my year forms up. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I like the group and it keeps me connected and grounded. I live in a rural area, and I like being engaged with other triathletes. Well maybe it wasn't that bad. I started mountain biking after I graduated college but that was usually followed by beer and burgers and I never got much better until a few years back 2012ish DH and other members of my family started running and it was "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em....." and here we are......2020 - 4 im's later! FAMILY STATUS: DH, DC1, DC2, DG (husband, cat Velocity, cat Cadence, Greyhound Bloo) CURRENT TRAINING: Training for Des Moines 70.3 in June and then planning on just having fun and keeping up the fitness. Planning on IMCDA 2021! THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Headed to FL next week for the Disney half (yes I said the SAME THING last year) although I'm battling a foot issue so it may end up just being a vacation. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I like having like minded peeps to inspire me and share things "non tri people" wouldn't understand WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I'm fun to have around and everyone needs a little snark in their lives. |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Manatees Roar into the 20s! NAME: Melanie, currently age 46 for a few more months. OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I am on Facebook, instagram (mpayton15) and Strava. STORY: Always an active youth with and without organized sports. Bought in-line skates as a teen, learned to ice skate at 23, started officially playing ice hockey on a team at age 27 and never looked back. I'm a goalie for a women's team. Dabbled in running which got sidelined because of an injury (hence the move to hockey). Did charity road bike rides and some MTB. Put running aside for quite a few years, then met a friend who got me interested in triathlon which will be my 10th year of tri in 2020. In the middle of all that I studied Tae Kwon Do and earned my black belt. I thoroughly enjoy being outside doing most anything - kayaking, hiking, biking, running, swimming - whatever. FAMILY STATUS: Married with 2 sweet, aging dogs, 14 and 16 CURRENT TRAINING: I am part of a tri club that is based in another state and have just changed from a coach I've been with for 3 years to another with the same group - a female, I'm very excited to have a new perspective and new coach! THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: So far not registered for much - a 5K winter series and Chatt 70.3 but there will likely be some other races tossed in there once the season gets going. I'd like to do some more 'big swims'. I have unfinished business with a semi-local 5K swim... GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Hoping/praying that Chatt 70.3 isn't too hot and I can have a successful race and make a certain time goal which will make me eligible to get into SOS triathlon, so being eligible and actually making it into SOS would be a goal. I would also love to meet a time goal I've been close to but not hit with the aforementioned 5K swim. And my seemingly never ending goal: lose some weight. And meet more BT-ers/manatees in real life! WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I like to keep up on the goings-on of the group and offer support and inspires. I may not post as much as some but I read the thread daily (usually). |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees Roar into the 20s! After this past year, the whole idea of having goals or plans just seems crazy! Don't want to even start to think about how much fitness and money I managed to lose just by tripping over my feet. (Not just the large out-of-pocket medical expenses due to being between jobs and having crappy insurance, but FOUR cancelled trips/races that weren't totally refundable. It has been well into the five digits! Note to everyone--get that cancellation insurance from IM, Expedia, wherever!) Really my whole life (job, where to live, when to move, what I could do training-wise) this year has been out of my control. I guess if I do intend to do any events I will have to enter them at some point. But not ready to do that yet, and I think it will be a long time, if ever, before I really have faith that all my plans and efforts will amount to anything. |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Manatees Roar into the 20s! I have looked at so many angles to try and game the system and nothing works out. I think I will be unopposed, but as soon as I bank on that, I just lost my money. I also considered IMAZ, because it is after the general. Again, if I have an opponent, I will be dangerously under trained. It's really frustrating. I can't even plan on doing small local races. I am left waiting out the winter, and if things work out either do Louisville or Florida. More likely Louisville, because of the time off moving kids around the country. The other thing I'm looking at is, D1 is applying for jobs in Texas and Colorado, which makes it an easy sell to do Memorial Herman, Tulsa or Boulder in 2021. |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Manatees Roar into the 20s! I found you!! Name: Ann-Marie, manatee nickname Hands. The story of how I got that nickname is a lot tamer than you are probably thinking Other social media: I'm on strava and FB as Ann-Mare Delahunty. Pretty much every workout makes it to Strava. I rarely post to FB. Story: I've always been active, but lived by that running saying "our sport is your sport's punishment" (i think I got that right), so only ran grudgingly to keep in shape. On a whim, I decided to sign up for the 2009 Disney Marathon and somewhere in that training realized I liked it! In 2010 I did my first triathlon and have been doing them ever since, some years more successfully than others. Family Status: single with 1 dog - Teddy. Teddy runs most of my training runs with me and has his own Strava account Teddy the Griff. Current Training: I was feeling kind of burned out of SBR things this fall, so after my t-giving race took 2 weeks off from those things and focused on weight lifting. I promptly fu@#ed up my knee, so that was swell. I am able to run and do core and upper body gym things, but haven't been on the bike for a while. I also haven't been swimming, but that has nothing to do with my knee and everything to do with not wanting to go to the pool! Fingers crossed, I think the knee thing may have resolved! I hope so bc I'd like to have a little bike base before starting Choo 70.3 training in a few weeks! 2020 Races/Events: I've got plans for the first half of the year - the 2 important to me ones are Choo in May with all the other manatees and Glacier HM the end of June. After that I have no particular plans other than the Cherokee Harvest HM in September. On a side note, I see Janyne asked for 2030 race plans, but since i can't plan much more than 9 months ahead I'll have to get back to her in 2029 Goals: My goal every year is to stay healthy. Hoping 2020 is the year I hit that goal! I also took an online course by Dr. Stacy Sims (Woman are not Small Men) and hope to incorporate things i learned into my training. One big thing is nutrition - I have a long history of screwing long course nutrition up, so i am counting on what I learned from her to fix that! Another goal is to either not be allergic to Chatanooga this May or have a good plan for not feeling the effects of the allergens that about killed me last race! What makes me a good Manatee: I'm pretty active both in the main forum and with inspires. I also enjoy the manatee meetups we've had a some of the races. |
