The ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 14m 59s
Overall Rank = 4044/8917
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 861/3337
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5am. Took a shower. Capt No Fun and I meet our neighbor in the lobby (we stayed at the Ritz last night). I grabbed some coffee and had a Cliff Shot.
Event warmup:

None. I'm bad about not stretching. But then again, this was a GTR (Glorified Training Run).
Run
  • 2h 14m 59s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

2:14:59 Chip Time!

2:23:10 Clock time.

2:15:01 according to my watch.

Crossed starting line at 7:11:52am. 10k time was 1:06:13.

  • Skipped 1st water station - too busy.

  • Ran 1st mile at slow conversational pace. Started off with 6hr Marathon pace group and leisurely made my way up to the 5:30 and 5:00 hour pace groups over the1st 2 miles.

  • Tried to maintain even pacing for miles 3-9. Took water at a few water stations.

  • Tried to pick up the pace from miles 9 to 13.1.

Nike+ipod says my splits are as follows (doesn't match my time exactly since I forgot to stop it right at the finish.)

1 - 10:31

2 - 10:37

3 - 10:32

4 - 10:36

5 - 10:33

6 - 10:16

7 - 10:16

8 - 10:22

9 - 10:02

10 - 9:52

11 - 10:07

12 - 10:03

13.1 - 10:08

What would you do differently?:

Not a thing given that this is with 14 weeks of running under my belt.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice bath

Event comments:

Great race given that it was the first one (even then I don't know what they could have done to make it even better). Only things missing or issues that I saw were:
- No Gatorade at the end
- Gel stations after water stations (should be the other way around - next time I'll bring my own)

Way to run, nothing like a training run with a crowd and closed roads.

Awesome job! You're a brave soul to tackle a half marathon with just a few months of running under your belt. And you did a great job! Congrats!

My miles splits came from the nike website after I uploaded from my footpod.

I lost the miles markers after the split for marathon to 1/2 marathon. Took me a while to figure out that I could calc the distance from the marathon mile markers.

I thought that was one of the worst parts about the race -- you couldn't tell where you were! A few times I saw mile markers painted on the road, but you had to be on the correct side of the road to see them. And then on Peachtree at the end there were also some painted mile markers for the Thanksgiving HM -- way too confusing!

Anyway, congrats on a great time after such a short training period!

Good job with the race/training run. I'm jealous of the ice bath you listed in you cool-down. I'm thinking an ice bath would have done wonders for me this morning if I found one at the finishline.

Hey, congrats Jonathan. I didn't see you or anyone we knew at the Marathon, but Elena said she saw a few folks and I hear Courtney saw me, but I musta been oblivious by the end of the race.
Good job.
