Champion 8766 Evergreen, Colorado | Subject: RE: The Biggest Loser Sous - 2013-03-07 2:50 PM BikerGrrrl - 2013-03-07 3:05 PM I assume they are avoiding the before/after comparisons for the kids to take the spotlight off weight loss. But I would wager they have all lost weight, or they are getting SO MUCH better clothes it's ridiculous. Sunny, in particular, I thought looked really good. Poor Lindsay just has a shape where she holds all her weight in the middle. That genetic type is a hard cross to bear if you want to appear "thin." I admit I was thinking "eh" when seeing how heavy Jackson still is, but then they showed the footage from the first episode and it's staggering. Yes, those guys need to lose a lot more still. No to belabor this point, but Gina was wearing a size 10 skirt. While she is still overweight, she is not obese. I am not trying to say that being overweight is "a-ok" health wise, but I feel confident in saying that about Gina. I wish they said what size Danni wore. She looked great but you can see her remaining problem areas. But that's good for her, more opportunity to win! I am just surprised by how much weight those sweatshirts add. They looked so much better in real clothes. Gina lost 75% of her neck! I like Gina fine and I wish they hadn't focused on her negativity so much that one episode. I doubt any of them are perfect and when you're starving yourself, I think you get extra leeway for saying dumb things. I liked the episode. I could have lived without the fake dinner scenes, but oh well. The fake-seeming "talks" with the kids also. P.S. It was Joe, not Jeff, that has the twin brother. The only problem is that a size 10 is meaningless... there is no standard for that. Not to mention the fact that women's sizes have slowly creeped up along with the typical American's weight. It's all marketing... what was a size 10 is now a size 18, etc. They haven't crept up THAT much! I find them about the same as they have been at least the last 10 years or so. IMHO a 10 is a 10 is a 10...plus or minus one size. |

Champion 10019 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: The Biggest Loser A size 10 is not meaningless to me in this context. I am not suggesting we write a scholarly article stating that size 10 is not obese and set a new standard. But today, in the context of this show, it one of the better ways to judge. Simply looking at height and weight is what the geniuses who created the BMI did. |

IMHO a 10 is a 10 is a 10...plus or minus one size. No, it has changed. Especially in the past 40 years--since the beginning of mass produced clothing! Just like our standard of what is "ok" socially weight-wise. They do correlate. I've noticed it, especially in lower end stores. Just last week at Target, I picked up a size "M" dress. It was HUGE. I picked up an "XS" dress...it was not an extra-small. It looked like an old medium. I'll put it out there: I weigh 145lbs. I'm not thin. I'm muscular, but I am also not "all muscle", I've got some chub going on! I am BY NO MEANS a "small" or "extra small". I've always been a solid 'M" or "L" depending on the brand. How is it in less than a year, within the stores, I am not fitting a medium, but fitting extra small? The clothes are changing. I do not have a 24in waist. At Target I'm an XS-S, when most of my Target/Gap stuff I'm *always* a "M". Some French brands I'm a 10. Most I'm a 6. Here's a couple good articles: Our sizing system makes no sense: Now, I will say I *DO NOT CARE* what size Gina or Danni is. At all. I'm glad they're making positive changes. The numbers on a tag do not matter and I'm not going to say some is, or isn't, fat because of a tag. How they perform, how they've changed. That is a better indicator than some tag. It's just like a scale. 10lbs don't really matter. Numbers aren't a great measure of health (although, yes, a good indicator of bad health!), and clothing sizes aren't either. S, M, L, 8, 10, 12... all meaningless and they HAVE changed. Maybe you only see it slightly over ten years but def. over a generation or two it has skyrocketed. My wife has anything from a 0 to 4, even a few 6s that all fit her and are all fairly new (i.e. all bought in the last 4-5 years)... she has an old funky women's tuxedo that was her grandmothers... fits her like a glove, its a size 12. I'll put it out there as well... I'm 5'6" and weight about 135 give or take a pound or two. I'm a small guy for sure, but I was regularly wearing mediums. I have some older stuff that like most men I don't want to get rid of despite my wife's nagging... its all medium. Now, smalls are typically big on me. I usually have to shop where they offer XS and even then its hit or miss. Although I'm 42 YO I have to shop at "kids" stores... American Eagle, Hollister, etc... because apparently"thin is in" with the kids these days. As Comet said, I too don't really care what size they are I'm glad they are making progress, but too often people hold up "I'm a size 10" as some sort of badge of honor when in fact its meaningless. |

Oh yes. I have several of my late grandmothers pieces. One I treasure is a leather blazer from the late 70's. It's a size 14. Another skirt that is a 12, that only fits me now. In the stores now, I am a much smaller number. I have a pair of my mom's 'famous' Calvin Kleins. They are...I don't know what size. Maybe 8-10. Not sure. I just know I can't get them over my thighs! Barely above my knee. My husband is over 6feet. Very broad shoulders, but very thin, weighs 165. He is a small shirt, but they're usually too short. We buy european, size L and XL. They cut trim. American L drowns him. But anyway...I wish they hadn't even SAID "you're a size 10!" |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: The Biggest Loser I think the coolest thing about Joe's bro doing an incredible job of losing weight and getting healthier on his own is Joe can truly see via his twin's success how he (Joe) looks to other people. Often folks have body dismorphia when losing weight and can't really 'see' the new them, they continue to see the bigger them. I think the kids are losing weight, it's just tougher to see unless they show the before and after. Regardless of their current weights, at the very least they are now more active which is a big step in the right direction. Agreed, most of the makeovers for the adults were lackluster (mainly just haircuts of existing styles), but I liked what they did with the kids' hair, especially Biingo. His new 'do made him look a bit less like a little kid and more like the tween/young teen he is. |

Regardless of their current weights, at the very least they are now more active which is a big step in the right direction. Agreed. Kids really can't lose weight like adults. I mean, they are still growing so they can't restrict as much. For them it's definitely key to get the movement going, get proper nutrition going...and weight should take care of itself (slower than we might think, but it will happen). I think what's important is that it seems like some of the KIDS think they look better...even if we can't see it. |

They are too old fashioned looking to be room keys.... 2. Wow, 19 extra pounds of muscle for Danni? Cool. 3. Can't believe Bingo lost 25% of his body weight...I see the difference but not THAT much of a difference. Lindsay looks the most different to me. 4. Man, I wanted Danni to win that last challenge! 5. I enjoy some of the before/after...it is crazy to see how far these folks have come...especially the medical stuff like Danni's gain of 19 pounds of muscle.... I'm off to finish watching...I just wanted to say all that before I forgot. |

Queen BTich 12411 , | Subject: RE: The Biggest Loser I voted for Joe. I don't know why, I think I like him more. Jackson has a great personality, but I kind of feel like he's skated by...he's still a big guy. Why hasn't he lost more? (Just thinking out loud here) I get it that he has some major reflux issues (or some issue). I don't know. I hope Danni wins. It's going to be tough for her, harder to lose the 20ish lbs she'll need to lose to beat Jeff. The trainers were great this episode. I thought overall the episode was too much emotional, touchy-feel crap, but I think it's great the producers highlighted that the contestants...normal people...can be inspiring too. Jillian was actually nice. Bob...I've always liked Bob. I was surprised that Bingo lost 25%, but the difference in his legs & body was more than I thought. I guess it's because he's still a chubby kid. But, he's a kid. Hopefully he'll keep making good choices and he'll grow out of it when (if) he starts getting taller -his parents look to be on the shorter side (doesn't matter). His mom! I was so impressed with his mom! She did that on her own, which is great. That's just as inspiring and hopeful as the contestants making the changes! I'm glad Gina won't be in the running. She redeemed herself a little bit this episode, hopefully her attitude continues to change in real life. Nice shots of her doing CrossFit at home too! She looks great.

Master 1946 Memphis, TN | Subject: RE: The Biggest Loser Wow what a finale. It really worked out to the most likable people being in the finale. I couldn't believe the numbers this week. Just seemed to be a bad week for the bottom three and the other two knocked it out of the park. I didn't really like Jeff at first he had sort of a blank stare on his face like he was going through the motions but it seemed Jillian's therapy session turned a switch on in him and he's been doing great. Good for him. I'm pulling for either him or Danni. It's hard not to rood for Danni she's been so solid this season and she'd be a great spokesperson for TBL.
Really a pretty good season overall. Nobody that is truly unlikeable, even Gina who it took some time not to be portrayed as a witch. Even if she is unlikeable she has produced on the scale. Hard to deny that and not respect her effort. I can't wait to see the others at the finale. |

It changed those kids' lives and their families. Bingo's mom looks great! I always like the episode where they add back the weight they took off. I think it's a great reminder to them of how much excess weight they carried and how it felt. Looking forward to the finale!!! |

I'm glad she was below the yellow line. How do you gain 100 pounds in five years?!?!?!?!? This is what people mean when they say it isn't just calories in/calories out. Stress. Stress alters your body chemicals and messes up your body's orderly system. Your body will not react properly to food and will store far too much....because your chemicals are all messed up. Then when you try to lose weight it's like swimming upstream. Read "It Starts with Food" (search on Amazon for it). They explain it better than I can. But that's one of the reasons we see such HUGE weight loss numbers the first week. Even I lose huge numbers the first week I clean up my eating. These people's bodies aren't reacting properly to food...and a lot of bloat/puff accompanies that. You take a week or two (most people agree the first week is longer than a week) and hit the reset button on their systems and a lot of the bloat/puff goes away. You do that for several weeks in a row and you reset their body chemicals and their bodies start processing properly...combine a properly functioning body with large amounts of exercise and weight will literally fall off people.... |

I couldn't stand Jeff at the beginning, but I like him now that his personality is showing a bit more. So glad Gina went home, although I've softened toward her just a bit during the past couple of episodes. I'm so glad that they had a bunch of more positive contestants this season, and then brought in the kids which kept things inspiring too - it's been much better to watch than the past couple of seasons. I watch this show because I'm a sucker for people making positive changes in their lives, and that message gets drowned out when it's all gameplay and negativity. This season has been more motivating and positive - nice change! |

Anyways, I did make it to the part where Jackson was like, "we could barely climb this hill 8 weeks ago and now we are powering up it like machines," it was a good reminder to me to not get too excited about where I am, as I sometimes do. There are a lot of highs in training, but there are more lows. Hope these people can make it through the low spots that are coming up. And does Jackson have a chance to win this thing, like he says. I mean that guy still has tons of bubbly fat to lose. The others don't look nearly as porky. I mean in our new lexicon, I would call him Fat, the others merely overweight, although I think Danni and Joe look quite good already and would be hardpressed saying they need to lose weight. Also, so no marathon this year? |
