Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by melbo55 Oh, man(atees), you are making my brain hurt! Decisions, decisions! Long story short: there's a race I want to do but it has a qualifying restriction of sub-7 HIM. I went 7:12 at LP 70.3 The 'wish-list' (that's not actually on my blog wish-list, LOL) race people aren't answering my inquiry if 7:12 on a hillier, 'harder' 70.3 is sufficient and the hefty registration fee is non-refundable if they discover you don't meet the qualifying standard. So I'm looking for a less hilly than LP half for 2019 to hopefully make the cut for the wish-list race in 2020. I really would love to race with the manatees but it sounds like the bike elevation is similar to LP although Chatt's run is possibly flatter? A friend suggested Muncie in July - has anyone ever raced there? Edited to add: I'm not afraid of the hills, I prefer a rolly, hilly race to dead flat, I'm simply looking for a race at which I can make the sub-7 qualification. Further edit: I think a dead flat bike would be pure torture so please don't suggest any such races. The Oly at Williamsburg was too flat IMO. Look at either Muncie or Steelehead. Muncie has 1,021 in climbing, Steelehead has 1,261 feet. Steelehead has short rolling climbs aka Michigan Hills. I'm toying with Steelehead as my tune up for IM Lake Placid Edited by JBacarella 2018-10-25 6:54 PM |

It has a reputation for being very hot though. How are you in heat? It looks like Muncie is slow swim, fast bike, medium run and is overall a medium fast course and seems to come in faster than Chattanooga (and it's probably way closer to you!) Member 836 North Augusta, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Thanks for the feedback on IM LOU hotels. I currently have a room already booked at the Hilton Garden Inn on Chestnut between 3rd and 4th. Looks like it's less than 2 blocks from the finish. My sister is coming as Sherpa, and my other sister and 79 y.o. mom will arrive Saturday. I wanted something within walking to finish that also would give her easy access to the run course. I know it'll put me 2 blocks further from transition. Parking access is a bit cheaper and looks to be more accessible than other hotels (but I'm not totally sure). I've been fighting crud all week (thanks, ragweed), but today's 60 degree run was amazeballs!! I also had a PR in my 5k last Saturday, finished 8th overall woman (yippeee), and saw lots of puppies. |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Melanie, Calgary is probably too far but it is a super-fast course. Swim in a little man-made lake, basically flat bike course (there are actually some false flats up/down, but nothing steep; can be windy, though, and there are a few very rough miles on county roads), fast but pretty run course with only one major uphill maybe 1/2 mile long. Plus the bike course is a bit short--the RD said it is actually about 87.5 to 88 km, short by 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 miles. There's a reason I've set my two PB's there. If desperate for a qualifying time, that might be a good choice! |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED It's less than one month until Black Friday. What gear are you hoping will got on sale this year? In the past, I've purchased a power meter and a smart trainer. Personally, I'm kind of hoping that Garmin will have a sale. I think that my 920XT is on it's last legs. If the 935 goes under a certain price that I have in mind, I may get it. What's on your radar? |

I have not used Zwift because I don't have a computer to hook my trainer up to and I haven't wanted to buy a computer since I'd rather ride outside anyway. Zwift can run on AppleTV so for $150 (or $180 if I "need" 4k) -- plus an ANT+ > Bluetooth smart dongle ($60) -- I can be up and running on Zwift for the winter. I'm not expecting any sales on Apple TV devices though! |

Melanie, it says on the web they changed the course a bit, and it's supposed to be even faster than in the past: "athletes will experience the new course that will be faster than past years, with the same beautiful, scenic qualities and safety as past years. You Don't want to miss it!" "The course is flat and very fast! The 13.1-mile run is an out-and-back paved run course through the beautiful Bow River Pathway. Although it's relatively flat, the run course will treat athletes to a challenging hill up the Bow River Valley." Here are more details: http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman-70.3/calga... They don't have dates yet, but it was at the end of July last year. It was 90 the year I did it. Of course, that may not be hot to some of you, but coming from the Wet Coast, it felt like Hades. |

My Vivoactive 1 is EOL, hasn't had a firmware update in who knows how long, and can't count laps to save its life. Plus it doesn't really do open water. I'm hoping for some sweet sweet Garmin sales so I can get one of the fancier models. If the lotto had gone my way, a smart trainer would be of interest as well. But it didn't, so I will wait until next year. I do also need to get a smattering of cold weather cycling gear. What's the minimum I can get away with? And for those thinking I would repurpose my running gear....no dice, I'm afraid. Some weight gain means I need to replenish for all the sports. |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Well, as my mom says, it's "dry heat"! My standards are basically: 50 and below: Cold, possibly life-threatening (for triathlon, at least) 60's and 70's: A little nippy. 80's: Perfect! 90's: Warm; could be worse. Good to go! 100's: Getting hot 105+: Now it's hot. Where is the finish line and the pool of ice water? You may want to take with a grain of salt recommendations from someone who chose Malaysia as a first IM. Edited by Hot Runner 2018-10-26 3:36 PM |

This weekend DH has access to a sale through his work where we get a cost plus 10% on all the merchandise at a sporting goods company his company owns. So i am definitely going to see how reasonable that makes the 935. He said we can't afford it but it may be too good of a deal to pass up (i've had my vivoactive for 4 years, it's nice but it doesn't do a lot of stuff i want for when i get into some real training again) |

Cold winter cycling gear -- I assume that you have shorts that you like. If that is the case, get some tights from Performance. I'd also recommend a cycling vest if you don't already have one and a jacket (softshell, breathable). I wear inexpensive (unpadded) tights over my regular shorts.
