Crazy to think someone could win 2 IMs in a month, with a combined time less than 16 hours. Even crazier to think he could be that dumb to wear the same helmet that could get him DQ'd. We'll see what plays out.

Well, I'm glad it turned out to be a legal helmet.  What a mess that would have been.

I swam with the kids swim team this morning for the first time in a few months.  It was a good old fashioned a$$ kicking as usual.  I made it to 3600m and then bailed - they still had another 1000m (at least) to go.

It is kind of funny how that all played out.
People got excited based on a couple of low res pictures
A prominent pro filed the official protest
Head of WTC refs had to call the athlete to verify
A higher res picture was quite clear what kind of helmet it was and was legal.

Could this not have been all avoided by checking the helmets before race ?

Thanks everyone!  I finished 6th AG but there were only 4 K slots.  Being so early in the KQ period I didn't get my hopes up.  Turns out there was only 1 rolldown slot in the M40-44 and 2 in the M45-49.   A guy from Ireland got one and another from Austria....made their trips worthwhile.  Going in, I had no expectations of coming that close to KQ and was just happy to finally execute an IM fairly well.  Still lots of room for improvement....2014 is going to be epic.   I'll jot down some nutrition plan and race strategy notes when I get back home.

I was really happy to see your finish time
I was less happy to see your AG
If you qualify for 70.3 WC (which you will), please slow down :-)

Great result Jim...well done!  Nice job to Chris as well on the HM!

I have had early pneumonia type symptoms for the last 2 weeks.  Finally visited the doctor last week, got anti-biotic and am finally back to normal and resuming training.  I could just not shake that sickness...really knocked me down.

Plan to be on the bike 6x this week and in the pool 4x...time to work that weakness!

Question - to swim 33min for HIM, what type of pool times do you think are needed.  Say the pace for 10x100M on :15 RI.

For me to swim 33 minutes at Honu (ocean, non wetsuit), I would need some improvement over where my swim was just before Kona. I'd guess I'd need about 1:23-1:24 for 10x100 YARDS on :15 RI. I could do around 1:26 for 10x100 on :20 RI leading into Kona.

I swam 34 min in Miami and I was doing 10x100 with 15secs at around 1:30/100m

Here is a Garmin
http://connect.garmin.com/splits/398091444

I do 4x250m 'warm up" then 10x100 with 15"
It's kind of my benchmark workout to track progress

This one was done 4 days after Miami so at the same fitness as my 34' swim

There is no fade on the 100s, I probably could have been a sec faster

4 specific workouts, 1 recovery ride and 1 long ride.  My running is going to take a hit this winter, only running 2x week at this point.  I think I need to be dedicated to the bike/swim if I am going to the get results I am after.

So race day (for the distance) you were basically 15-20sec/100M slower than the 100's.  Is the difference in line with your expectations?  Trying to figure out where I need to get to in the pool, and this is a little disheartening.

Well, remember that open water can be funny for a few reasons. I was definitely getting at least a few seconds under 1:30/100M going into a couple swims. Averaged 1:31/100M on the 2.5k open water one (sub 30 min HIM pace), but like 1:44/100M in the HIM for ~33 min. Think something was off with the swim there as times were generally a bit slow and I wasn't swimming THAT much easier. Those were only 2 weeks apart.

I swam 27 at oceanside (wetsuit) and 30 at Miami, no wetsuit.  My bread and butter is 1:30/100 yds coming in at 1:15 working it, 1:20 comfortably.  On occasion we'll do a smaller number of 100s on the 1:20 sendoff.  But anything over 5X would likely be 1:30 sendoff.   We also do a lot of for example 6 x 100 on 1:30, 5 on 1:25, 4 on 1:20, etc., but try to keep the same pace for all 100s.  I've found this to be invaluable, for pacing and focus

You are looking at a 1:34 OW pace (yds).  I'd say you need to be on the 1:40 interval coming in 1:25-30

But yes, as mentioned, OW is a funny thing.  To your expected pace you can add (1) taper (2) wetsuit (3) draft (4) race performance, but subtract (1) course meassurement  (2) sighting and navigation (3) conditions (4) where the timing mats are (here in Cal. they are often way up the beach).

A couple of things.

That 34min is no wetsuit, for me it would have been a 31 with wetsuit
Also, in that HIM I was swimming at a very comfortable pace. I didn't want to be gased. I probably left a minute on the table.
I have great flip turns. My SCM to LCM or to OWS are usually a bit off. Most people have 2s/100m between SCM and LCM. I have 3 or 4. I have good flip turns :-)

I swam 34min for my HIM and just went back to my logs to get an idea of what I was doing. I have one entry in there that says "9x100 on 1:45 -- this actually felt surprisingly easy and most came in at 1:36 (with the first and last each being faster)". This is in an SCM pool.

So to go a minute faster over 1900m, I suspect you'd want to be doing somewhere in the 1:35-1:40/100m pace.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want a specific rest interval, rather than a specific working interval? I don't have a swimming background (so take this with a grain of salt), but I've found that I'm not super fast, but one of my strengths is that I don't require a lot of rest. So whether I give myself 15s rest or 5s rest, my pace doesn't seem to be affected as much....and giving myself less rest, I think, results in better fitness.

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
