WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I have experience as a Manatee, and I'm a member of the Yanti is awesome club! Ah! One of the secret passwords, along with POPTARTS and FACHME IT'S WHOPPER TIME (I'll let Yanti explain that one). I was wondering if everyone can see the Manatee Glossary? I'm updating my nicknames and sure I'll be adding more. I wish I could find that picture ... it's gold. There was an employee at Burger King here proudly sporting his name badge, which read: FACHMIE ... it's Whopper Time! Now, Fahmy or Fahmi is a common name here, pronounced Arabic so the h is a bit like ch (in German). The "a" is like hat. That is NOT how he pronounced his name He pronounced the ch like it was K and the "a" like bark ... This document? Gracious, do you have everything ever????? BTW, I moved the bike gallery to a BT Album. "Gracious"? Isn't that a little like "bless your heart"? |

Pro 6520 Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 Originally posted by StaceyK I need some help Manatees. My mum and my sisters have decided that they are going to do a HM with me at the end of August. They aren't currently runners and are all over 40. They are thinking, finish not fast, and run walk. They have asked me to do them up a training plan. The HM is 33 weeks away, so I am thinking a 30 week plan (by the time I get it done and to them). They can all walk for at least 45 minutes at a decent pace so they aren't total couch dwellers. Where do it start? I have said for now they have to be walking for at least 30 minutes a day four times a week and 45 minutes once a week. What are your thoughts from there? An HM for a reasonably healthy person is very doable with minimal training (complete not race). Over the years, my wife has done 10 HM's on almost no training and she has recruited similarly trained folks to accompany her on many of them. She typically averaging about 2:45. If one were to devote 30 weeks of prep for an HM I would think they would be quite well prepared. If they have not run before, I would suggest adding some run time to their walks and gradually increase the walk/run ratio. 30 minutes four days a week plus 45 minutes is a pretty good start but 5 days a week might be tough for someone to commit to over an extended period of time. When sessions get longer it might be better to shoot for 4 days a week so as to have more rest/recovery. I think that is great that you are helping them out. It will be a very rewarding experience for all of you. |

Pro 6520 Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 Originally posted by tomsimper Hi After reading all the posts I am well and truly motivated now for 2016, I had planned on doing three sprint tri's this year to get me in the swing of things but I am now thinking of doing a sprint in may and then an olympic distance in July. Do you think this is a realistic aim or should I stick with just the sprints? thanks Tom I think that is a perfectly reasonable goal and a good progression. Are you going to be following a training plan? Take a look at some of the BT plans to get an idea of suggested workload to prep for an Olympic. I have no doubt you would do great with the proper training going into it. |

Pro 6520 Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 Originally posted by DaveL I am currently biking 6 -7 days per week and was routinely throwing in a couple of runs through out the week before I messed up my toe. I am getting close to being able to run again but also would like to add in some swimming. I work 10min from a pool but cant really stretch my lunch too long. Can anyone suggest some productive 30 - 40min swim sets? Dave, I work about a mile from a pool and do most of my swimming during my lunch hour which usually means about 30-40 minutes actually in the pool. I've taken a break over the Winter but usually shoot for three sessions a week of 1500 to 2000 yards. With this limited amount of time, I have gotten my 10 x 100 times under 1:30 and last two IM swims about 1:15 so pretty happy with that. I usually start with a warmup of 300-500 yards. Then it is some combination of 50's, 100's, 200's and one day a week I'll do longer sets like 4 x 400 or 5 x 300's. I don't do drills because I hate them and I suck at them. If I tried a kick set it would take my whole session to make one lap of the pool but I would encourage you to get a lesson or two and a coach would probably suggest some drills to throw in. With limited time in the pool, long continuous swims are not the best use of your time. I will only occasionally do a straight 1500 or 2000 but it usually as a time trial to gauge my progress. If you can get a few lessons, one thing I found the most helpful was video analysis. What you think you are doing you probably are not and it was very valuable to see what I was really doing with aspects of my form. Remember, it is all about form. |

We are still friends to date. That was in 2008 I had a similar experience in 2010. It is one of the reasons I really appreciate the multi-mentor team approach that has grown here. Holy Moly!! I'm such a weather wimp that I've actually suggested to Tony that if we move ANYWHERE from Austin, it'll have to be FL, because I can't handle winter anymore! Not that I ever could, but now - definite NO to winter. NO! I'm in Austin & I also did the 70.3... it wasn't a stellar day for me, but we won't talk about that right now... I *think* there's also Katy represented, and there was another Manatee in Austin, but I don't know where he went? Are there other Texas Manatees?? Where in Canada are you from?? I'm from Vancouver & miss it a LOT, but not so much during the wet winter... :D Snowed here this morning Monica I posted this for Monica cause I am in Vancouver you yahoos. She DID live in Chicago for a few years. Ha! I lasted 2 winters in Chicago and that was IT! No more polar vortex crap for this weather wimp! Wow was there a lot of reading to catch up on! I also woke up to a few new Strava friends. I like this group already! I'm originally from Toronto and believe it or not I miss the winters a lot. There's something nostalgic about shoveling snow. Raking leaves all winter just doesn't do it for me. Are any of you on Zwift? I was on Zwift, not so much now. I tend to be using CycleOps Virtual Training. Anyone else on that? First success of the year )))) Okey, little background for those who do not know my miserable swimming history: I completed three sprint triathlons last year in breaststroke, because I was completely not capable to learn freestyle. I had group lessons, individual lessons, watched all the videos, and read tons of articles on the Internet (to the point that when I was doing my breaststroke sprint I was looking at other folks and quietly pointing all their mistakes…) Whenever I felt my breathing was under control – the legs dragged me down. When I thought the form was getting better, I did not have the endurance to finish more than 75 yards… I was so frustrated I was considering Olympic distance in breaststroke. I was extremely sad that this stupid stroke stood against my triathlon (and possible IM) career. I read the Total Immersion book and started to follow some of the ideas from it. It was like a miracle. As if it was my first day swimming. I could not believe in the progress I was making, and mostly – how comfortable I felt without using extra tricks (I used to sing “Embrace me” by Sinatra in my head just to not focus on drowning…). Last week I was able to do 3x100 in the damn front crawl!! And today I followed (almost exactly) the 0 to 700 plan and managed to do 3 x 100 yards of front crawl with only 16 breaths between each set, and I was not tired, nor exhausted, I did not feel even a tiny bit of anxiety, it was smooth and easy breazy!! I was so happy I was about to cry ))))) I will continue with 0 to 700 until I manage it without a blink, and then will follow 0 to 1650. You will not believe how excited I am. I am. I truly am. I wish all of you days like this ? (with a much better progress than my tiny little 3x100 of course) Edited by marysia83 2016-01-05 1:43 PM |

I also said, "You clearly need to work on your level of commitment." Kevin gave me a look that said, "You ought to be committed alright!" He must have an awesome flying mount. |
