January 7 is Ben's birthday

Welcome to the new Manatees!  Welcome back all returning Manatees!

It's actually today, but thanks all!

Oops!  I hope that being close counts!  Happy birthday!

Happy Birthday Ben!

Thanks for the well wishes. This came from the RD:

"Don’t touch the Feral pig traps you will encounter, it’s against the rules. If you see pigs just let them be and they will get out of your way, some riders like to bark at them. The Alligators won’t be very active, and if it’s cold they might be lounging close to some trails to get warm, so give them some space."

Good Times.

hahaha, that is epic

i hope the weather clears for you, they cancelled the Disney HM because of the forecast tomorrow!

Today I ran in short and a short sleeved shirt.  This weekend I will need to wear All The Things.

Tell me about it. This morning was the first time I've worn a shirt on a run since last Friday. I'm not sure I have enough clothes for what they're predicting here Sunday morning.
It's not going to be that cold!
28!!!!!!!! #texascold

The harder you run, the more heat you'll produce!

Sunday is LSD day

This almost got away.

More seriously though, that is cold enough to where you do want to pay attention to things. 40's can be funny as usually so long as you're moving you'll be ok, but that can change quite a bit just a little lower. You going to be ok with it? 30' of 28F just around my neighborhood isn't anything to worry about, but think your long runs are at least several hours now. Quite a bit different.

I'm mainly just joking. But when I run with my wife on her long runs in chilly weather I do have to wear a lot more than I normally would as it's more like a walking pace for me now. She's only running 8 Sunday with her marathon a week out at that point, and then I'll tack on another 7 solo but will speed up for those so not worried about temp.

I am a bit confused as to what to wear cycling tomorrow. It's supposed to be 26* at the start of our ride and just about above freezing by the time we're done. Sunny & N wind at about 10 mph.

I'm guessing the additions I'll want to make will be some hand warmers over the toes of my shoes under the neoprene shoe covers, face mask, and some hand warmers in my gloves.

I'll have on a cycling beanie, thick long fingered cycling gloves, long sleeve thermal top, bibs, short sleeve jersey, arm warmers, leg warmers, tightish pants & a cycling vest.

Thoughts?
Move to Western Australia its around 80 here today with some light clouds and a very gentle breeze.

(Mind you one day during the week it got to 110)

Since it's Texas, not sure it's all that different? Think it's mostly seasons inverted. How cool does it get during the winter down there?

They seriously cancelled it because of rain?  Isn't it in the 60s there?  I'd be pissed if I drove 10 hours to participate in it!

Thinking good weather thoughts for you, Chris!  Stay warm North American Manatees!

We got a whopping 0 inches of snow.  I mean, like not a flake.  We had rain and then freezing rain (didn't stick to anything but the trash bin) and sleet.  Total accumulation of under 1/8 of an inch but roads are slick and all of the brine washed off.  My corner of the county got a lot less than Raleigh and Raleigh got a lot less than Durham.  The snow/mix/rain line was right over us.  Coach said today is pretty much a rest day (glad that she is local).

Fl rainstorms usually bring lightning. Fl is the lightning capital of the US. Orlando is the lightning capital of Fl. My rain right now isn't too bad, but I am a few hours away. Yes, it sux to not run. It sux worse to die running. If I was running it and they hadn't canceled, I would have bailed. Lived here long enough to know the deal. And the cancellation policy I heard was pretty generous on their part.

Granted, I wouldn't have driven 10 hours or flown or paid the travel costs that others pay, so I get it. They'll take a load of flack for it, but it is a hard call. I wouldn't want to be making that decision.

it wasn't cancelled because of rain, it is lightening.  We get crazylightening and it is deadly.  There are too many exposed places on the course, so they had to cancel.  It was the right decision, but, yes, disappointing and I'm sure people are angry.

It is. Have had green grass everywhere by me before and just an hour north had at least 8-12" of great skiing snow still down.

I did my first HIM last year and really loved it but thanks to some life changes I really just don't have that amount of time to put into it this year. I'd love to be able to do another one this year but might be lucky to get 8-10 hours of training in during a week. My goal would be to just finish the race. Last year's plan had 10-14 hours of training per week (plus of course the inevitable extra hours of set-up, gear-up, laundry, etc.). The same book (https://www.amazon.com/IronFit-Secrets-Iron-Distance-Triathlon-Success/dp/0762792930) has a "just finish" plan that looks more modest and might be possible for me with respect to the training. Just curious what experiences others here have had. Adam

Only done 3 HIMs, so YMMV.  First after a good Oly training block as a "let's see."  Second after specific HIM training.  Third (Galveston - with a gent who could easily CRUSH me now - looking at you Sean) as a "warm up" for a triple Oly a few months later, so didn't peak specifically for it.

Training hours per month were about the same for each of them, averaging ~45 (low of 37 early in the Oly run up, high of 55 before the second one, as I was also riding a lot in prep for the B2B ride later that year).  Fastest was the second one, but only by a couple minutes IIRC.

As for no suffering, I haven't done one without suffering.    With that many hours (10-12/week on average), I was able to actually race them, though, and not glide, coast or walk.  I think it comes down largely to what you want out of the race.  To finish without injury or perhaps a specific time, etc.  FOR ME, I'd not want to try an HIM on a lot less than say 8 good hours a week, and at that would adjust my expectations on effort I could hold significantly (is my guess - haven't tried it).  Again, YMMV with age, recent and longer term base, etc.

To turn Greg LeMond's awesome quote upside down, it doesn't get harder, you just go slower.

Enjoy the ride.

Matt

Thanks, Sean, Dave, Matt, and others I may have missed. Sean, given your worsts HIM time is a full hour faster than mine one time, not sure that I'd be starting with a better base

My goal would be to finish without injury and < 6:45. With temps in the 90s last year, I ended up walking the run some despite being in decent condition and would likely do the same this year.

Also, lunch workouts and before/after work trainer rides would be possible. Based on your comments and some other reading, I'm guessing 8-10 total hours week with at least a few rides/runs to length would let me finish safely.

In weather news, Janyne and I finally got snow. Lovely gentle snow in Raleigh now (on top of a nice ice layer).

If you can actually average 8-10 as opposed to peaking or doing it occasionally, think you'll do ok in getting through it. I've tended to have a good deal of volume for these, so not as much experience with less myself in HIMs. Remember that you have done it before and experience does help with this. You might not have the same fitness, but the mental aspects and discipline gained can be rather substantial towards doing well.

Training has been inside on the treadmill and trainer for a while now but it was nice and sunny so I got out for a walk to the beach today. The bay is just starting to freeze.

Go ahead and hate me. 85 degrees here, dry (by Vietnam standards), breezy, bright blue sky. Hoping that dry season has finally come! Also hoping the flooding recedes in southern Thailand--it looked pretty bad on TV; I'm booked for a training camp there in three weeks (at Tet).

Tet is super-early this year (on the 28th) and all the decorations are up; stores and restaurants are crazy, airport was swamped with returning overseas Vietnamese when I arrived at 1 AM on Saturday. They are already starting to set up the big display and flower market that takes over part of my riverside running route, as of yesterday. Just don't feel ready for another full-on holiday so soon!

Where I live it gets down to the mid to low 30s in winter, no snow, not even talk of snow but often plenty of rain.

We got about an inch and a half - it really came down for about 45 minutes or so around lunchtime yesterday but that was about it.  The SE coast of Maryland got slammed (for them) with like 8-10 inches.

A few of my students are going to Vietnam for Tet. They go every 3 years and spend about 2 months there. They take boxes and boxes of supplies, clothes, and anything else they can think of with them for family who still live there. One of the girls, Than, told me that they currently have 15 boxes they are taking on the plane with them! I can't even imagine how much that will cost!

No snow here (at least in the last few years), but there were iced over puddles on the trail around the lake the last couple days. Loved it!

I don't miss snow a ton (just now and then), but I do like when the temps drop briefly below freezing. For a day or two...

Heading to San Francisco tonight for a conference this week, but there's an "atmospheric river of moisture" pounding them and delaying flights. Fun!

They must have been on my flight here! I counted 145 boxes coming off the plane onto the luggage belt. My humble little duffle was absolutely the LAST thing off the plane. The guy in front of me at customs X-ray was discussing his intended importation of what appeared to be a gun (suspect it was an air pistol for sports shooting--quite popular here) with the agent. I got out of there real fast....hadn't even heard about what had happened in Florida yet (maybe it hadn't yet--confused about time!)

I did my part for creative importation by filling my bag with six months worth of electrolyte tablets, 72 granola bars (of course as of yesterday, granola bars have made a reappearance in the store!), six pounds of nuts, three pairs of running shoes, and (yeah!) a whole 4-pound loaf of organic whole wheat bread from my favourite local bakery. Customs didn't even blink--they were too busy with the gun ). The only time they have ever asked me about anything was my bike trainer a few years back. I explained that it was, "Machine for ride bike in house." (My Vietnamese is pretty basic.) Officer gave me a look like I was nuts. "PE?" I ventured, running out of vocabulary. He sighed and waved me through, no doubt having had enough of white people talking nonsense after midnight.

Actually, you CAN get most things here in Vietnam, and I doubt anybody's starving or lacking basic clothing, even in pretty poor villages. It's not like South Sudan or Yemen. But it's what you can't get that you crave, and that friends and relatives would ask you to bring!

Starting a new thread here with a question for the pod:

What's the least amount of training you have done to finish a HIM without extensive suffering? Follow-up, based on your experience, what's the least amount you might recommend?

I decided to start doing triathlon in late Oct 2014. I did Galveston 70.3 April 26 2015. I started following a BT HIM plan in January. Just looking back through my data I trained 28 hrs in January, 30 hrs in Feb, 35 hrs in March and probably 25 hours in april before the event. There was definitely some walking going on in the run, but I finished fine. With you already having way more base than I went into that with you'll be more than fine imo.

What was your time on that one. Just curious since you kicked my a*s at Buffalo Springs!

Had to go look it up. Now this bike course is way faster than buffalo springs. Especially this day, I think I had a tailwind both directions lol. That bike split is at least 10-15 minutes faster than it deserved to be.

Sean........00:34:05......02:38:56......02:04:43......05:22:13

And McManus kicked my arse that day with a 4:49

Still pretty solid although based on some of your Strava workouts I get the impression you'd be disappointed with a 2:04 nowadays. Pet/bike gallery? I'm in for the latter.

I was stupidly disappointed at the time. For some reason I thought I could possibly run 8 min miles lol. I'm still yet to do that in the 3 HIMs I've done. I should have been ecstatic with this run looking back on my training at the time.

I ran about 1:50 in the last two HIMs I've done, the 2nd was much hotter than the first so I consider that progress even though the times were the same. I'm hopeful for another step change in my HIM run this year.

Oh, and thanks for all the advice on what to wear cycling. When I woke up Saturday morning it was cooler than forecasted, 21* with a feels like 9*. So I chickened out and rode the machine for ride bike in house in the garage. Still needed shoe covers! lol

I'm pretty sure that I am not alone in this but

What's with the wacky weather?!

Where I live it gets down to the mid to low 30s in winter, no snow, not even talk of snow but often plenty of rain.

Very similar to my part of Texas then. About once a decade it will get this cold and/or snow but most years we don't go below freezing.
