I think I might hunt down these pop-tarts and give them a try. Or I buy a couple of jars of Nutella, for emergency purposes. OK, that's all the Hungarian I know. But I've known it and can remember it for 23 years Pop Tarts are FRUIT. They have REAL FRUIT in them. It says so on the box! They are actually quite popular with some pro tri champs as pre-race breakfast. And me P.S. A guy who speaks (at least) four languages never needs to apologize for grammar. Especially at midnight! Yup I've always wondered how Hungarian stew made it to be one of traditional Polish dishes |

I am going to be optimistic and add in my bio NAME: Barbara STORY: I was a swimmer all through high school. I started running after college (because I couldn't afford a gym with a pool. At 30 I started running marathons and at 40 I decided to use my swiming background and did my first 70.3 last year. I am really slow but looking forward to improving. I work full time as a physician so like everyone I am always searching for time FAMILY STATUS: A husband who has a long commute and leaves early in the morning so I have difficulty doing morning swims and an adorable 4 year old that knows to find me in the garage when she wakes up working out She always asks if I am going to win the race so she can have a medal. CURRENT TRAINING: After my 70.3 in September I had some hip pain. It is not completely gone but I need to start training in a few weeks for Cour d'Alene 70.3. Maybe a 1/2 marathon in March THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Cour d'Alene 70.3 GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I have always done better as part of a team. As a newbie I still don't know what I don't know and unfortunately there isn't a tri club by me WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I love positive motivation. I will try to be participatory in the group Barbara, I hate to be a wet blanket, but we are currently packed with Manatees. There are some other groups that are starting up that may be helpful for you. You may want to look at these: Birkierunner - http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=538008&posts=18&page=1 Gray Guys - http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=538206&posts=25&page=1 Ted - http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=538159&posts=20&page=1 I have been in a group with Ted before and he is a good guy. While his is Sprint focused, he is taking some longer distance athletes. Also, Birkierunner (Jim) is a good guy and really knowledgable. His is more of a Long Course focus, which may fit you well. I'm not sure about Gray Guys/Girls, but they have been going strong for a few seasons now. Good luck with finding a group and with hitting all your goals. Take care of that hip! |

My wife on the other hand who does about three HM's a year always recruits and runs with a friend for her week or two of training leading up to the event. It is very difficult to get on the same page as someone else though and each training block seems to involve a new partner. I think that groups tend to find equilibrium better than random individuals though. Around here there are several running clubs and LRS sponsored weekly runs that seem to be more consistent and predictable. |

I think if it wasn't for the group I would have skipped twice already Originally posted by cdban66 Ugh, flexibility/mobility. My nemesis. I find that, with all things fitness related, I seem to do lots of the things I like, and avoid the things I don't. Therefore, flexibility has not been something I've made a priority. Here and now, I'm saying that I will pay more attention to stretching and mobility work for the next three weeks. Let's see how that feels come February! I was thinking about the "core discussion" on my way into work this afternoon. My personal shortcoming is flexibility. I find that when I do a good leg stretch every day for a week or so, I see benefit. It kind of falls in line with Ben's and Yanti's statements of "What are you going to gain?" and "What do you need to do?" I also try to incorporate some core, yoga, or pilates movements as well. I find I am better off if I take about 10-15 minutes at the end of the day and do a stretching/core routine. I'm not sure that this will help everybody or anybody for that matter, but I do find that it helps me. ANd sometimes that's the best we can go on. Try something for a few weeks in a row and see what happens. Well, flexibility is another one to be careful of. It's not just increasing the range of motion, but being able to power the appendage throughout that range. Just increasing flexibility can give a joint the stability of a wet noodle if one really goes at it. Like with how extra strength training & core strength one does not need to become crossfit champion of the world (generally you just need enough to have decent form to perform the activity you want), it's also not necessary to become a contortionist with flexibility. You only really need (and probably want) enough to do the activity. And don't forget about being able to control the motion throughout this increased range. I know these examples get rather hyperbolic, but sometimes that helps to visualize the point. |

I did much of my training solo until I met my training partner. I'm still okay to train alone; I like the time to myself. I have a question for Tour of Sufferlandia experts. Most of the rides are on Trainerroad; I realize the videos 'make the ride' but it is possible to do them without the visual? Can't see shelling out a bunch more cash right now... |

Yes, you can just use the TR app. Couple of points to note this year though: trainer road is not partnering with sufferfest this time because sufferfest have released their own app and are now their competition. Also, there's a new video in this year's tour that hasn't been released yet. Whether the guys at TR towers will get a workout to match it out in time will remain to be seen. |

I do have a friend who I got into triathlons last year and we would do the odd run, mountain bike and swim once per week which was good but he is injured now and this year might be out for him. I also ran with his wife a number of years ago which really helped on those long wintery long runs but ya, 99% after 8pm on the treadmill or trainer in the basement. I am an introvert with a capital "I" so that works just fine for me. (not sure what happened with the quote thing there) Edited by DaveL 2016-01-07 6:25 AM |

I don't drink coffee (I know but they still let me be a Manatee), but I do drink a bit of English Breakfast tea and partake of a fair bit of chocolate. May I ask why you don't drink coffee anymore? Is it related to your recovery, or you just don't like it as much as you used to? o.O I personally prefer green tea (some kind of Oolong), but I drink a cup of Latte now and then. Have you had to deal when the moved/left/stopped training with you? Boo! Who said that she can move? She should follow your example and upgrade in place! Right? I used to do a ton of group rides but when I started to do tris, my workouts stopped matching up with the rides so I started doing many of my rides solo. Then I had my accident at BikeMS when someone in front of me went down and so did I. Since then, I've been pretty selective about my rides. The other thing that happened is that the CSH ride that I did every Saturday for years and years had the nerve to change while I was in Sling Prison. It used to be a fast group (for Ben, etc.) and a group for normal people like me. Well, the fast group took over and now there is no normal people group. I've had a hard time finding the right Saturday ride for me. Most of the CSH Normals moved over to MSing Links but they are kind of the Slow Old Men Group which is also not a good fit. I'm faster than MSing Links and slower than CSH. :-/ I do all of my running solo. My coaching situation is changing the April/May time frame and I think that I'll be doing more group activities then. Most of my swimming is done in masters so group swimming but not riding/running so much. The thing that I like about doing my workouts alone is that if I have a very long ride, I can leave at sunrise and get home and have some afternoon time with Kevin. With running, I can do a lunch run or run before work and still get in pretty early. |

For those who lost it in the thread, the Strava group is at https://www.strava.com/clubs/manatees You can request to join PM Chris or me and one of us will help you out. If you need help linking Garmin to Strava, speak up. Someone here can help with that. If you've tried Strava before and didn't like it, you might want to give it a try with the group. It's a lot more fun with a group. |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 I've bought a Garmin (it should arrive on Saturday) because of all of YOU! I was doing my run today and I had a blast, I was enjoying myself as almost never before and I tried to beat my PR time (I couldn't, it was dark, it was raining and the road was muddy, at least these are my excuses), but I have a determination as never before. I will start my swim Masters training next week, I am a little bit nervous about it (I am not really scared... ,but almost). I looking forward for my races this year (to be honest I would love to run a half-Marathon this week just for the fun of it). So overall I am really happy that I joined this group, I might be a little bit overwhelmed with all of the features of BT (inspires and all that stuff), but I should learn my way around soon enough. And I need to get my hands on some poptards someday, they look really unhealthy. I apologies for my grammar mistakes, but it is midnight here and I've just finished my run for today. We're happy to have you! |

I think I might hunt down these pop-tarts and give them a try. Or I buy a couple of jars of Nutella, for emergency purposes. OK, that's all the Hungarian I know. They are actually quite popular with some pro tri champs as pre-race breakfast. And me P.S. A guy who speaks (at least) four languages never needs to apologize for grammar. Especially at midnight! We are at Nutella crisis at my house! I froze up when I went to buy it though. Classic Nutella or the Justin's brand one. I need to decide soon! |

I just got my Kickr up and running and I'm using Zwift. I love that as the terrain changes on the course my trainer automatically makes it harder/easier to ride. Is Suffer... the same? If not, are you supposed to adjust the difficulty of the trainer yourself based on perceived difficulty from the video? Originally posted by Richardsdrr Originally posted by blueyedbikergirl You can hear this coming a mile off........DO EEEEEETTTTTT!!!!!!!!!@ Originally posted by Richardsdrr Matt, the Sufferland tour details are on their site already.... I've always wanted to try the Tour of Sufferlandria... but I'm askurred! Hahaha! I was wondering how long & who would be the first!!! Yes, they are a series of videos that have a set of workouts with varying purposes. they are awesome, hilarious, and crazy hard most of the time. We have a set and i admit I haven't used them in a very long time - but the idea is if you pick a workout that works on something specific, say sprints, you follow the instructions on the screen and do the workout adjusting your gearing, cadence, etc to meet what is being requested from the video. They often taunt you ... DO EEEEEETTTTTTT!!!!!
Sufferfest is just the set of videos. Their effort is based on RPE although this can very well be translated over to power. Those of us with a dumb trainer have to pay attention and pedal harder as the onscreen RPE goes up. Smart trainer owners (Kickr, Computrainer, etc) may have the option of programing the workout into a file ahead of time. By doing this and synching with the video, the amount of resistance will change with what you see on screen. So sounds something like you see with Zwift, but you have to make the effort to get the programing in yourself. Sufferfest doesn't do that, not as far as I know. Some of the others here with smart trainers could offer better advice on programming or obtaining this. Ben is correct ref using the sufferfest videos on pre. You control the effort based on the instructions on the screen. You can do this with the kickr in (I think)) resistance mode, where you control the resistance using the gears, much like a dumb trainer. Where the kickr and sufferfest videos really work together well is when they are run through a third party software program like trainer road or cycleops vt. The kickr is controlled by the software. When a hsrd effort is shown on the video, it will increase the resistance on the kickr to a set wattage. Its not quite like what happens on zwift, where if you slow down your Watts drop, , on this your watts stay the same. I've done the tour on both a dumb trainer and smart trainer. Both are hard but the kickr is brutal, there's no escaping the work they want you to do. If someone hasn't already taken up Dave/David's (sorry, too many names to remember) offer of a free month of trainer road , give it a try. If they have, give it a try anyway. I think it only costs 10 bucks for a month month and you can cancel at any time with a money back guarantee. I have a dumb trainer, but use it in conjunction with Trainer Road, a Wahoo sensor on my bike and iphone app for virtual wattage. I cannot guess how accurate it is, but I can tell you it consistent than just going by feel and cadence. Plus it cost a lot less than a real watt meter on your bike. |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 Originally posted by juniperjen So, my long time running buddy is moving away! Well, she's still going to be in the city but it won't be so convenient to run together very often. I've been a bad running buddy for the last few years, what with going into tri and then having a baby ... but i will genuinely miss her and feel the loss. We've been running together since 2007 and trained with her for 4 of my 5 marathons (and same for her) do you have training friends? Have you had to deal when the moved/left/stopped training with you? Yes I've had that happen and it stinks. I live in a rural area and had two close friends that I would mostly swim and ride with. I had actually trained both of them for their first triathlon (only a sprint and I have no qualifications other than I did it). Then I had a couple of years of training with both. It was great because I would do my hard workouts on my own, like I always had and the lighter ones with them. In the same year one took a job downstate 3.5 hours away and the other had a major back surgery and almost two years later he is still not cleared to run. My Summer training suffered. It was hard to motivate myself to go on that evening ride or OWS by myself. That meant more often than it should have I found something else to do. I did better last year, but I still miss the companionship. I think the one that is still in the area will be cleared to ride bike this summer. They have him doing a lot of core and strengthening exercises to build muscle before they will clear him to do more. So, hopefully I will a least have a riding partner this Summer. |

I can see where it can become overwhelming. I think for most people it comes down to going to the level of technology you are comfortable with coupled with price. |

Lots available for the bike but seemingly nothing for a treadmill. I am still looking for a ANT+ app that will work with my foot cadence sensor and HR strap that will display on my PC similar to what is on trainer road. |
