![]() jvanis - 2010-03-12 4:54 PM I hope to start tapering off the drugs this weekend so I can return to work next week after my post-op follow-up. I had some fun toys come in the past few days: Born To Run Chi Running A pair of Vibram 5fingers ![]() Hopefully the doc clears me for activity next week and I can start getting back on the bike and light running as well as maybe in the pool if all looks like it is healing well! My butt is starting to get flat from sitting around so much. Good luck next week...hope you get the release. BTW ... is that how I can get my butt flat - sit around alot? (I wish) |

![]() RoniS - 2010-03-12 7:32 PM Well, John, looks like I'll be in Galveston drinking beer with you all and cheering, but that's about it. Just got back from the podiatrist and he thinks he sees the stress fracture on the x-ray, but ordered a bone scan to confirm (Thanks for mentioning that Suzy). He put me in a "boot" for 8 weeks and said no running or cycling. He doesn't even want me to drive, since it's my right foot, but that's really not an option. He said Texas 70.3 was out and didn't look very hopeful about IMCDA either. Really, it was everything I had feared and then some. I had a good cry on the way home. I know they're just races, but... I did get a green light on swimming, so I guess I'll train like a swimmer. I also think I'll find a physical therapist to get some more ideas on things I can do, as the pod seemed to think I should just sit on my butt for 8 weeks. Roni, I'm sorry. I hope you get some better news from the bone scan. Hopefully it won't be as bad as the pod thinks. I love your attitude...had a good cry and now moving on to focus on something you have the green light to do - swimming. If you do have to miss these races (this year) just remember...there will be races in your future - those and others. Easy for me to say, but it is "just" a bump in the road and something that you can heal from. Hang in there! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, I am now two weeks from my first HM race, and I ran the longest run of my life today, 16 miles. Here are my numbers:
I'm still unsure of how to pace myself for the race. My LT is 189, based on a 5 k field test. I have heard that I should be able to maintain 1-2% under my LT, does that sound about right? That puts me at around 185bmp (2%). Thoughts? By the way, I felt great for the entire run today, never felt tired. I refilled my water bottle twice, and consumed 4 power gels. One every 30 mins. I think this will be my fuel plan for the race, as I felt fantastic. I hope everyone has a great weekend. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In theory, you should be able to run a few beats below your LT, but looking at the AVGHR data below you never came close to it. Have you run a 10K using this strategy? A 5K field test is great for training zones, but is pretty short to determine the pace you can hold in a half marathon....I would feel more comfortable if you have a 10K or 15K to judge it. Otherwise, you risk blowing up too early and having to slow down. Personally, I can sit at my LT for the first 10m of a half marathon and then goose it up at the end, but it takes practice and good conditions to do it. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, so the training plan called for a "reverse tri" today. 1 hour run, 45 min on the bike, 30 min straight swim with as little time in between as possible. I haven't had to endure this type of torture since last year ramping up for race season. So my question is, if they call coming off the bike to the run a "brick" What in HELL do they call coming off a run to ride the bike on the Drainer? OMG! No power, low cadence, high HR, thought I was going to run out of gears before I got done......WOW, I thought I was in shape. Maybe not! Swim was good, almost felt like therapy after that bike ride! Hope everybody has a great training day! Dino P.S. Sorry about all the injuries....man that sucks. Been there done that. All you can do is be patient and enjoy college basketball for the next couple of weeks. ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I understand where you are coming from. The last two years training for Boston, I would do part of my long run outside until I was frozen solid and then have to finish the last hour on the TM and it was HARD! The good news is when you do an actual event it will seem so much easier!!! Nice job getting it done, although I do question the sanity of doing a brick like this so early in the season.....I rarely get to do them and then only close to a race... badgerintx - 2010-03-13 12:28 PM Ok, so the training plan called for a "reverse tri" today. 1 hour run, 45 min on the bike, 30 min straight swim with as little time in between as possible. I think this will be my fuel plan for the race, as I felt fantastic. I hope everyone has a great weekend. What Suzy said sounds right...I plugged your LT into the Joe Friel's Zone calculator and Zone 3 is between 170-180. 185 is your mid Zone 4 which would be really hard for most people to maintain for a half marathon. I can do Zone 4 for a 10k but beyond that, I don't have enough endurance to maintain that type of effort for 13 miles. You are young, fit and possibly could? Have you done a 10k lately? I would guess if you keep it in mid to high 170's for the first 10 to 11 miles you will have that finishing kick to go to your LT by the end. You are going to do great whatever strategy you decide upon! Don't get caught up in what other people are doing, listen to your breathing and your body. I have found that it is way more fun to pass people in the latter stages of a race than to be passed! Good luck tapering! |

SSMinnow - 2010-03-12 1:47 PM Kelly--I am not up on all the abbreviations...I thought you were talking about an ex husband and a 6:!0 mile, but I am guessing I am wrong???? Help this old fart! Today was one of those days....you have a swim workout and you think there is no way in HE*& you can do it. Me doing Max efforts is crazy, but off to the pool I go to give it a go. Guess what? I did it....I achieved something that three months ago, I never would have attempted. I learned even I can have different paces in swimming and while I am not going to set the world on fire with my blazing speed, I can be faster. A really good way to end a Friday. So for those who might be doubting their ability today, don't. Amazing things can happen if you really put your mind to it. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() RoniS - 2010-03-12 9:23 PM Thanks for cheering me up John! Love all the swim ideas, especially Catalina Island LOL Suzy- mine is in the 2nd metatarsal, close to midshaft, think it's on the top of the bone but not too sure about that. I hope you do get to run in Galveston. Either way, I'll be looking forward to seeing you and cheering everyone on. This will actually be the first triathlon I've watched ever! ![]() Doug- I will definitely look into aqua jogging. Thanks! Kyla- My thoughts exactly, but I don't think I'm going to find one that tells me what I want to hear. ![]() MG- Thank you for all the kind words and healing thoughts! You all are awesome!!! Ah Roni that blows! But if you can't run for sure, like Steve said at least come and do the swim....Gary will still be there right? Come swim and can you bike??? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone, I have been out of pocket the last few days.....traveling and fighting the 'crud'. Been dealing with it for a week now and not letting it impact training...until yesterday when it knocked me over. I am better today, but really feeling frustrated about lost training and upcoming travel that will make training even harder.....sigh, I would never had thought I would long to get to the gym, on the bike, into the pool or just get out and do something. Definitely a lifestyle change for me..... Anyway, reading all the posts, looks like several are having to deal with bumps in the road and such. Glad to see that all are on the mend, and with a bit of humor and wit to go with it. It does help smooth out the bumps. My F6 went completely out earlier this week, and well, decided to change the battery myself. After reading articles around the internet, I figured it was worth trying. Turns out, it was not that difficult and it appears to be working again. I never used it in the water so the water resistance was not an issue for me. I am holding off on the Garmin for now....with subtle (and not so subtle) hints about what a great Father's Day gift one would be. ![]() Its a gorgeous weekend here in Houston, and I am not able to take advantage of it. And my first tri of the year is coming up in less than a month......maybe after today, the 'crud' is behind me and I can jump back into training again....I really do miss it!!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow...this might be the lightest post day ever for this group!! Was just looking to get caught up from the weekend - that took all of three minutes!! I hope everyone was out there training or enjoying some great spring weather (didn't have any of that here this weekend...all rain). Or maybe everyone is having a hard time with that lost hour today!! I had a good weekend. Long run Friday night...12 miles - first time going that long since my first half marathon last November. Saturday was at a youth wrestling tournament all day and then we took the kids to an indoor waterpark for several hours sat. night. They had a BLAST!! Today was spent getting some stuff done around the house and ended a bit ago with a trainer ride. Looking forward to getting back outside on the bike. Hope everyone had a good weekend. George |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know -- quiet day, huh?! I got to rest. And see Alice in Wonderland with the fam. And do laundry. And mix up water bottles for tomorrow's ride. And read my book. And work my crossword puzzle. All in all, the picture of a perfect rest day (minus the laundry!). Onward!!! Hope everyone else enjoyed the weekend and got some great training in! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got on the trainer yesterday and was sucking wind pretty bad after a week of nothing. I had some 5x2' intervals at 110-115% that were a challenge for me. At the end of the ride I was a bit light headed and must have pushed a bit much. I may do a short trip on the treadmil if the doc clears me today when I go in. Should know if I will get a cast or a splint. We had some amazing weather yesterday that made me wish I could have been outside on my bike, but no such luck. The way its wrapped right now makes it hard to shift ![]() |

Did not want to go but I forced myself to at least go and start on the workout. I ended up not only finishing it, but actually adding some extra laps to the planned workout. I'm still not very fast, but my endurance is definitely getting better! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have to agree - the weekend seemed to just disappear way too quickly! Sat - my plans to do my 7k race as the middle part of my long run didn't work out. Weather was not cooperating (cool, misty and a little windy all day long - misty I don't mind, but add the cool and wind to it and it usually sends me inside) plus my hubby decided to go to the race with me. Given the weather, I didn't feel like I could ask him to stand around in it for another hour or so while I got my extra miles in. So the run got shortened to just the 7k. I had a great race though! I took almost 3-1/2 minutes off my time from this race last year and even managed to conquer "the hill". I've run this hill 3 times before (this race last year and another race twice that uses part of the same route) and have always had to walk at some point on this hill. This year - no walking at all! I just kept my pace steady the whole way up ![]() Sun - I think the time change bothered me more than I thought it would. I did not want to get up and do anything Sunday morning. But I forced myself to get up and head to the gym. And I'm glad I did. I ended up with a really good swim workout and then added a short bike ride afterwards. Then spent the rest of the day with my hubby. DS is back at college after his break and DD went on a spring break trip with a friend's family so it's just the 2 of us until Thursday. We decided to take advantage of it ![]() I hope everyone has a wonderful week! Janet |
