But still...I have grown attached to my locker. I am a creature of habit. :D Yes, this is me too. Mainly cause I would never remember my locker if I didn't. Also my car in the parking lot. I always park in the same lane at the mall or I would walk in circles for hours hunting my car. How do you find your spot in transition? Luckily I keep my race number written on my arm |

I would have noisily and huffily removed my things to another spot and then called a friend to talk about locker room jerks, with a lot of very pointed looks. That's how we do thing in Minnesota. |

I hire a chartered helicopter to shine a search spotlight on my bike - which is outfitted with no less than 3 helium balloons in varying lengths (one is a Hello Kitty one), a hot pink feather boa, a poster attached to a yard stick that reads "LISA", which is sometimes mistaken for "USA" because I run the "L" and "I" together accidentally, and my orange Home Depot bucket. Plus the entire path from the lake to my bike is solid (and I mean SOLID) sidewalk chalk. It took 3 days and 16 buckets of sidewalk chalk but it was worth it. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Left Brain - 2013-03-09 3:45 AM oops. Chillax. So last night I walk into the locker room at the Y later than usual and it's empty. There are a few locks here and there but nobody in the room. I go over to a random locker and start changing. I think there are 10 rows of lockers with 15 or 20 lockers on each side. So I'm standing there half dressed and in walks this guy who kind of stands at the end of the row where I am. I kind of nod to him and them he walks over and opens up the locker RIGHT NEXT TO the one I'm in. I say, "dude!" He says, "what?" I say, "you can't find another locker in this whole empty room?" He says, "I always use ths one" I say, "not today"....and I shut his locker. He just stands there......and then he kind of starts looking around, and then he kind of starts wringing his hands and looking really distraught, and then it dawns on my stupid arse that the guy is autistic or something similar and he really can't figure out what to do. I felt like a schmuck. I said, "here bud, I'm sorry" and opened his locker back up.....he didn't miss a beat, and looked like he just found his long lost friend. There's a moral here somewhere......mostly it's about not being stupid. |

Baby steps, ya know? (still, I've got to admit....in 40 years of being in locker rooms I can't say anyone has EVER walked up and started to use th elocker next to where I was.....IN AN EMPTY LOCKER ROOM...so I may never get the chance to try it out) Like I said, I wish I would have handled it differently, but thanks for the idea of how to deal with it in the future.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hear you on the supreme irritation it caused. I would be much the same. However, I would have been the one to move my stuff, because the way I see it, it is my issue causing the problem. HOWEVER, if its a similar situation with urinals, then by all means you are well within your rights to say something cause that's just a blatant violation of man-law. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() I think that's how thing escalate for no reason. I mean, I wouldn't take a locker next to someone in the first place - so I'm not in the situation. BUT, had someone done that to me in any other instance, I would have done more than stand around apprehensively. I'm sure it be responded by strong words and HOPEFULLY it would defuse at that point. I also keep thinking of that scene when Dustin Hoffman freaks out at the airport when he can't fly Quantis in Rainman if you might have done that to someone with some issues!
I guess if I'm only inconvenienced or made slightly uncomfortable, I can live with it rather than do/say anything that could escalate. Same reason I might say "excuse me" if someone bumps ME in a crowded bar instead of puffing my chest and demanding some kind of satisfaction. It's easier to save "bringing the thunder" for bigger issues! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Reminds me of the time I was getting out of my car very early at work one morning. I am the only car within sight in a parking lot of probably 2k empty spaces. My door is open, and I'm reaching over to the seat next to me getting my stuff together to haul in to the office. Someone pulls up to the space where my door is open and starts honking for me to shut my door so they can park in *that* space. I stopped what I was doing, leaned out and looked at them with an indignant look, then went back to what I was doing without closing my door. They just sat there waiting while I finished and got out. Beats the eff out of me why they had to have that space. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yikes. Don't come to a "high-contact" culture like Vietnam. Your post made me realize--yep, I tend to always take the same locker in the gym, mainly so I can remember which locker I took. No Rainman-like freakout if it's taken, but I do try to choose another square number or multiple of 11 so I won't forget. One of many strategies I use to compensate for being a space cadet. Anyway, I realized today most women choose a locker in the same row, even if there are only five women (there are probably 120 lockers in total in five rows of upper and lower units). It's not at all unusual for 90% of the 10-20 women in there to be using adjacent lockers. Using one in an empty row would look vaguely antisocial. Was thinking this is just a woman thing but it's not like that at the pool in the US. |
