Just returned from swimming.    I'm ravenous.   Let's see, a petite filet mignon, steak fries and garlic bread.    Start with a small chef salad.    Spring water from an artisan well  and a small glass of 14 year old home brewed mead will be the libations.

As stated earlier in this thread cooking for one isn't that much fun.      Would anyone like to pop over and join me?

Smile

I was just thinking about what I was going to do for dinner tonight, your meal sounds way better than anything I'll end up with!

My SO is on the way home from an agility trial--with my cold .  I am still not well--I am going to make some chicken noodle soup for the two of us.  I sense a stay-at-home NYE coming up!

amd723 - 2012-12-31 12:59 AM There is a HM on feb 9 th that I really want to do. Those of you who were manatees this time last year may remember me discussing it then - it is a trail run through a wetlands park. Alligators line the run course ( although I didn't see any while running last time) and as the sun comes up you watch the birds ( water fowl, eagles etc) start to stir. It is a really laid back event and I really enjoyed participating last year. The problem is because of my foot issue I went 6+ weeks without running and have only just been giving the ok to ease back into things. I ran 5 miles yesterday, my longest run since starting back. So, the issues are: do I have enough time to get my mileage back up to HM levels and, if so, will the effort set me back with my recovery?I know no one can answer the latter question, I will discuss that more fully with the doctor when I get my orthotics in the next week or 2. So, I guess the real question for this forum is whether or not I should attempt getting my mileage back up so quickly. I looked at some HM plans and with 6 weeks to go to the race it seems I should be at about 8 miles for my long run. However, I had a great run base before the 6 week lay off and wonder if that base would allow me to accelerate my build up without causing injury.Anybody have experience with something like this? Is it totally stupid to go from 0 to HM in 8 weeks???

Yes, and it takes 2-3 weeks to get used to orthotics as well. At least.

So here's the same answer I pretty much always give ... given that it's very unlikely, okay, pretty much impossible that you can train for it properly, so "racing" it is already out of the question, would you still like to participate? Why not do a run/walk ratio that's very generous on the walk side? What's the time limit on the race? I do remember it from last year I'd want to do it too!

Stop being the voice of reason!!! I would like to participate, but I don't think I'd enjoy a heavy walk- run " race". There is a 10 k option, so maybe I'll just do that. Since my goal this year is to be injury free, I probably shouldn't wreck that goal 6 weeks into the year . As always, thanks for the input. One more thing, I guess you wouldnt think that running the ft lauderdale HM a week later would be any smarter ...

OK, do you really want to ask? Don't dooo eeeeet. This year is about being injury free for you, so you may want to be a bit on the cautious side. Of course, having said that, there is another alternative. 10 miler in Tampa on Feb 17th, the Flatwoods Ramble. Just sayin'

We are struggling with illness too. My little guy has bronchitis. I think the only reason I didn't bet sick was because I was running in sub freezing temperatures. I really thought I was going to get sick, but I think the little virus germs couldn't survive the cold.

I hope you both feel better soon.

Thanks, Felicia, I hope the same for your son!  Bronchitis sucks.

Ok Manatees, need some help with race schedule.  There are two half distance races I could do next summer.  One is 3 weeks before my annual HM, one is 3 weeks after.  I know the first question is going to be which is my A race, the HIM or the HM.  To be truthful, I would like them to both be A races.  But, as I am training more for tris than specifically for running, I guess it would be the HIM.  Does it make more sense to do the HIM first?  Or use the HM as a 'warm-up' for the HIM?

2013 goals:
I want to do 50% more than I did this year in training, should not be hard since I only really started training in June.
Complete a HIM and a HM
Be more competitive at the Chattanooga Waterfront Oly, this was my first triathlon ever.
Be more consistent in my training and stop overdoing it some days then pay the next 1-3.
I want to race more and will be able to once I move back the lower 48.

Non-tri related:
Read at least 30 minutes a day
Try at least 2 new recipes a month
Eat more whole foods and less processed (this may be hard when I am traveling or doing job training)

Will do.   Just curious but when you commute home do you travel southwest or southeast to get down under?   England and Australia are basically the back of beyond from each other.

southeast via Abu Dhabi never been south west but wouldn't mind

Kirsten, I hope ya'll start feeling better. Vegas can wipe someone out, can't it? How is your achilles feeling? I think it would be beneficial to start there when you are deciding on your races for this year. I leave it to the more veteran racers in the group, but if it were me I think I'd do the HM before the tri and treat it as a training session.

Jonathan, These are some great goals, consistency is king. I have found that more training at a lower intensity has helped me out. A lot. I like the non-tri goals as well. Does the time spent on BT count towards your reading totals? And if you are looking for some recipes, I'll get my wife in touch with you. She cooks like there is no tomorrow!

I've gotta clean up my goal list for next year. I am trying to avoid number goals for training (x hours or x miles) and am really trying to get more in touch with my body. I do an OK job on it now, but am very inconsistent with stuff like stretching and core work. There is always something to work on.

Have a great day everyone. and have a great New Year, no matter where you are. Does anyone have plans to celebrate?

StaceyK - 2012-12-31 9:14 PM Does an interval run count as celebrating?

Hells yeah! Last year I did a long run around midnight to ring in the New Year and it was fabulous to watch all the fireworks in the sky and folks barbecuing and partying on the street, block parties and such.

Can really relate to the emotional downturn; I think it's common for this time of the year. Personally, I realized that this is the inevitable, natural and necessary come-down from the huge events of this month--IMWA, immediately going back to Jakarta with Christmases and the family wedding events. Physically, emotionally, spiritually, socially ... I'm way down, which is good, because I need a break and some quiet time and rest. Lots!!!

Lots of wonderful invites, 20something piglets (who'm I kidding, 20nothing is closer to the actual ages), very grateful for them all, but am spending a quiet evening at home with Mutti and packing to leave tomorrow.

As I looked back on 2012 (brief gratitude run-down is in my log), I am amazed that I and my parents made it through what we did this year, relatively unscathed, and that between it all I was able to rock the Casbah at so many wonderful piglet parties, also known as races.

To you, the Manatees, old and new, and all my loved ones (a continually growing number) I am so tremendously thankful. I could not have made it without you, and you seem to teach me everything worth knowing and doing. Everyone worth doing? Yes, and like that.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013 !!!

P.S. And not a nominal one ... I am down a kilo even post-IM and through all the events! How cool is that! I attribute it to sampling, not gorging, staying very well hydrated and bulking up on fruits and veggies before digging into main courses. I've also stayed active.

Something Jo Baxas and I brought up before--we struggle with realizing this is NOT the last cake/meal/piglet I am ever going to enjoy. It's something common to traumatized people and I suspect plenty of normal ones. Even though this really is likely the LAST Christmas as a family (of course, we've been expecting my dad to die for 30 years and he just keeps getting better and younger-looking), I was able to enjoy all the people, food, and events for what they were instead of trying to frantically milk them or be perfect or make them perfect because they might be the last. Nope, they just are what they are, and whatever comes next will be what it is and different.

P.P.S. I have no idea why the font and formatting are all wonky. They're perfect just as they are

I would do the HIM before the half marathon.  My thinking is that three weeks before an HIM is peak cycling mileage and you don't want to skimp on that.

I hope that you are over the worst of your illness and that you are back to normal (for a Manatee) soon!

GOOOOO RACING MANATEES!!!!!!!!!!

In got my Jogo done today at Masters. Interestingly, I had no problem getting up this morning to go, and it was snowing!!! I still need to get an hour run in this afternoon which could be sketchy with the icy bike path. DH suggested I do my offroad trail to avoid the ice.

For those of you already nearing the New Years mark, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!! Or as we say around here Feliz Ano Nuevo.

Just done my run. Had quite a fall. My 140lb dog came running at speed, about 20 mph id say. Sent me about 5 ft in the air. Wasn't hurt too bad, more my pride than anything. And the air was blue.

So I have one run left for this year, one hour scheduled. BUT, I noticed that my run is at 494.42 for the year.

2012 totals
Bike:122h 48m 14s  - 1783.65 Mi
Run:83h 29m 46s  - 494.42 Mi
Swim:88h 37m 08s  - 185606.6

How's about I run 5.58 miles? Make it an even 500 for the year. (BTW, Salty probably had that much done in January Laughing)

OH, and I biked 93 miles more in December than in November! And ran (including tonight) 20 miles more in December than November. DaYum!

Yesterday I was telling DH and DS1 about my totals for the year and DS1 commented that I'd basically ridden my bike from Albuquerque to Omaha!
