A swim coach would be ideal, but I can't justify the dollars at the moment - I feel like I need a bike fit more than swim coaching. I did try to get away with bargain dollars swim coaching a couple of winters ago and got what I paid for. What I may try to do is film myself swimming again, and see what feedback I get online. It's less than ideal, but better than nothing. Besides, I haven't seen myself swimming for a while, and I feel it's good to see how you actually look compared to how you think you look.

Neil - You could try to get in on this on ST.  Not sure how quickly you'd have to sign up though.

Tom - thanks so much for that post. I got in.

Hey Neil, I had also signed up for this. I don't think I've ever actually posted on ST but I read pretty regularly. I'm "sneaker" over there if you need to look at someone who struggles at an even slower pace.

Cool - I'm MustGoFaster.

That's great, I was hoping so.  His program intrigues me as well (not for me - for others that ask me for advice).

Ugh - disastrous day yesterday.  (yep - warning: rant/vent coming)

This is a rest week, with a test Oly on Sunday.  I've been doing steady volume the last couple months and maybe even dropped a bit of intensity the last couple weeks as I look more to the HIM, with this week being a lot less of both.

Swam about a mile and a quarter yesterday after a nice 4+ mile tempo run, and felt good.  A bit tired at the end, but nothing unusual and really felt overall pretty good.

Got home from the swim and my left should decided to just stop working.  Same pain internal to the shoulder and slightly posterior - same as I felt last December when I tried to "swim pretty" per the coach at my one and only lesson.  That ended up with 6 weeks out of the pool, a cortisone shot, a 4 week gradual ramp back in the pool and one grumpy triathlete turned runner for the winter (impingement syndrome - minor but there).

Now, after an EASY swim (honest!) and with a race in 2 days, I'm back in the same boat.  Took some ibuprofen and will do so q 8hrs until tomorrow afternoon, plus am obviously NOT going to swim tomorrow.  As hope springs eternal, I'm HOPEFUL that it will just go away with some anti-inflamatory Rx and a bit of rest.  However, the (no longer practicing) doc in me suspects that won't be the case (and hope is not a very solid strategy in any event!).

Well, I'll let y'all know how the race goes.  It's not so painful that I think it's a risk of further injury (I know what THAT feels like from my right shoulder years past), but I'm going to pull myself out of the swim if it so much as tweaks.

JUST SO FLIPPIN' FRUSTRATING, as I was feeling pretty solid about the next couple months of races to which I've been looking forward all year.

Well, hopefully this will just be a rant that turns out to be an over-reaction to a rest week "niggle and wonk," as I always seem to get some kind of mystery pain during a rest week.  UGH - three days before my first Oly...  ugh

Venting over.  Now off to ride to my bike (a happy place).  Smile

Matt

I'm one of Slowman's Guppies. I swim with my TriClub but the only feedback I get is that I need more "snap" to my pull. That's been like telling me that I need to run faster to improve my 5k PR. I've been stuck at 2:00/100yd forever. In OW I more or less fall apart.  Without some structure/goal I will totally slack off swimming this summer and just ride my bike. I'll take any improvement in the pool I can get.

I've had some shoulder pain that sounds somewhat similar in the past....I had my ART chiropractor do ART on it -- miracle, I tell ya!  Do you have anyone who can do a bit of ART on your shoulder in the next day or so?  Might be worth giving it a shot.

Ditto on the ART.  I have a shoulder issue from an accident and ART helped a lot.  I also went to PT though to stop the problem from re-occurring.  A good sports PT is worth their weight in gold.

I probably won't be able to find someone for ART prior to the race, as we're leaving shortly to drive up.  However, I'll likely check it out when I get back!

One good thing occurred to me - I have a wicked side-stroke.  Wink

Look for a (possbily truncated) RR Sunday or Monday.

Thanks!

Matt, since it was an easy swim workout that precipitated the shoulder pain it may just be a slight strain. In addition to the ibuprofen include some icing. If you feel like the pain is muscle spasm add some self massage, foam roller if you have one. I also like using a lacrosse/golf ball for harder to reach spots. Tennis balls have a bit too much "give." When you get back from the race find a good ART practitioner. Mine is a PT and has a sports medicine practice. It can be incredibly painful but well worth it. Shoulders can be chronic. You may get through one race but better to get in front of whatever is causing the problem.  Oh, and good luck this weekend. Rock that side-stroke.

Hey Matt - good luck tomorrow - I hope the shoulder doesn't give you too much trouble. But hey, look on the bright side: if you do suffer a gimpy swim just think how much fun it will be to have all those folks out in front to chase down on the bike and run!!! I don't really have any good advice at all to share on the shoulder, but if it helps at all I had something terrible happen to me yesterday as well. I was running around getting ready to leave the house and I scooped up a handful of almonds and tossed them in my mouth and started chewing. Mmmmmmmmm almonds. Then I remembered I had not taken my fish oil capsules and I grabbed a couple of them. While I was waiting on my water glass to fill up so I could swallow the fish oil, I tossed back a couple of more almonds and started chewing.

Needless to say fish oil capsules do not taste anything like almonds.....

I'm also signed up as a guppy. I have to admit that I have issues with being a guppy because I was a guppy at Girl Scout camp when it came time for swimming, every single summer I was there. Frown One of my swimming mantras is "You are not a guppy." lol But it is what it is. His plan sounds interesting, so I think it's worth a try. It certainly can't hurt.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

I did the swim leg of a team relay at Epic Dartmouth this morning (3.8k/90k/90k/21.1k).  I was out of the water second in 55:15(ish) which is a little over a minute faster than last year and the water was choppy at times.  I wish I had had that pace last weekend in Tremblant!

The rest of my team is looking at a bit of a miserable day, windy and rain.

I'm behind right now here. It's been a chaotic week since getting back to Canada and no SBR in sight for the next couple of days. Moving + ironman= tired. My workouts have been going up and down the stairs and lifting/squating for the past few days. My place is finally taking the appearance of home. Next tri is on July 21 here in Prince George. I think I signed up for the Olympic distance but depending on how I'm feeling maybe I will ask to downgrade to the sprint. A few of my coresidents have done tri in the past so looks like I might have some training partners!! Woooooo!!!

So it has been well over a 100 here the last few days and that is starting to affect me.  Not in the way you would expect though.  I left for my ride this morning and it was about 80F and I thought to myself...brrrr.  Heading to Alaska in a few days, I should probably pack my parka (they actually have been warm but are going back to their regular temps when we get there, figures)

Got a good 100 miles in yesterday.   First century in... a  long time.  Climbed the same 5 ish mile climb with 1400+ feet elevation at abou 12 miles in, then again about 70 miles in on the way back.  I've been losing power later in rides so was glad that I rode it at the exact same NP and a little faster the second time (HR was a bit higher tho...._)   Also - was riding with a 29 year old (kid) training for LP.   I've got 16 years on him, our HRs were the same both climbs      But when I turned to finish, he turned to finish his 7 hour ride, to be followed by an hour run.   Ah to be 29 (or not...)

Followed that up today with a 13+ mile trail run with about 1K feet elevation.  Felt good both days, although legs a bit heavy the first couple miles.

Supposed to have a 1:20 OW swim today.  Ran early to avoid the heat. Gonna ride my cruiser down to the beach.  I'll bring the cap and goggles but if I swim, I am swimming in board shorts....  If I swim.....

Did an 80 mile race pace simulation ride -- pretty pleased that a) I did 80 miles (longest ride for me so far!) and b) I was able to manage my HR where I want to keep it for Vineman in a couple weeks.

Still really not loving my saddle and considering going back to my Adamo Road or trying to pick up an Adamo Attack.  I only have two more outdoor rides before the race (unfortunately, Tri Team Transport will be picking up the bikes Saturday and won't be able to get them till the Friday before the race -- may be able to sneak in a short ride then).

Also did an 8.6 mile walk yesterday.  Walking for that distance / amount of time is actually more difficult than I would have initially thought.  Just being on my feet for that long is tiring.  Hoping to run some amount of the race....will run when I can, walk when I can't.

Had a really good training weekend, but I'm a little behind on some sleep.  Will try to fix that tonight.

My GF also had a good race up Haleakala.  She cut off about 30 minutes off her time from last year despite riding the first hour or so really slow trying to keep her coworker company (until she was told to "beat it").  Maybe a good pacing strategy though since she was passing a lot of people on the second half of the climb.

I had the weirdest OWS

I did it up at my cottage. It's a 1.9km Rectangle based on 3 landmarks

At landmark 1, I stop, stand up and a duck or goose lands maybe 100 feet from my left. He is making a noise but not aggressive.
He takes off, you know, with his feet just touching the water and fly to about 100 feet to my right.. Takes off again, flies to my left, back and forth.
I thought he was injured and couldn't take off and hold his flight

So I start swimming again and sure enough, every 30 or 40 stroked while sighting I see this duck/goose flying about 10 feet in front of me. Left to right along my trajectory. He did this for about 15 minutes and disappeared.

I cannot figure out what that was all about. He kind of had a reddish/orange head and I had an orange bathing cap. Maybe he thought I was a duck ?

He was not super aggressive although there were times he flew 10 feet in front of me. Kind of freaky to put your head up to sight and there is a good size bird flying by, with this feet just touching the water.

Very weird.

What stroke were you swimming?  You must have been flying (oooh, that's a bad one).

All I know is that come the fall (and open season), that bird is much more likely than most to find itself on a grill!  Darwin at work…  Tongue out

That's pretty cool/funny. I've been chased by geese on land so it might also be a bit unsettling. Back at the duck.com there is a goose telling his buddies about this big new duck in the 'hood who is pretty darn fast in the water but can't fly worth a damn.
