We rode in Bent Creek on Friday and met up with Robin and Jim afterward. It was a gem of a day. I had another good ride on Saturday. Kevin made his ride "epic" and ended up in urgent care. He was going through a boggy area on a single track and hit a submerged branch just wrong. Don't worry! The bike is OK! Kevin cut his knee and ended up with three stitches. He's on the DL -- well, off the bike -- for 10-14 days. The doctor there (and here) don't want him tearing the owie opened with the constant pedaling. I'm pretty sure that he'll be climbing the walls by the time this is over. (In other Kevin health news, he has his first vaccine shot tomorrow.) I'm glad Kevin and the bike are ok! I have no answer for you regarding tire choice, but I am curious if your Aspero has the same tires as mine -Donnelly 40 x 700. The tread is gripping on the side, but (supposedly) the direction of the tread down the center makes for smoother running on pavement. I've only ridden short distances on the rode and they felt ok, but in addition to it being a short ride, it was flat so my "this isn't bad" feeling may not hold for longer and or hilly rides! Nope. I have Panaracer GravelKing SK 700x38. |

I should have come out here before your logs Those Panaracers you are running are fine on the pavement and the non-pavement, judging from the pictures I have seen of the "roads" you are on. I ran those same tires in a 35 width on the previous bike and they were real nice. Just enough grip in the messier stuff, but they handled the Jeep trails and fire roads real well. Mud is a whole other animal and I don't think they were as capable in that. However, mud is a small part of my rides, so I just deal with the traction issues that mud presents. And they weren't too helpful in the sand, but I would need a fat tire bike to deal with some of that around here! |

My question is what to run on actual pavement when it is mixed with forest roads. For example, of you were riding 55 miles on pavement and 20 miles off road, what would use? I looked at the CRR and it's easy to see why I was feeling the difference on pavement

To show my ignorance- what is CRR and what does that power number represent? Crr is rolling resistance coefficient. (technically ) I was more interested in the fact that one tire takes 10 watts more than the others to go the same speed. That seems significant. |

Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! So, for the race you are doing, I am inclined to think tire pressure will be the thing that helps. Run high pressure when on road, "air down" a bit for the chunkier stuff. You can get as deep into the rabbit hole as you like. I'll share an experience of mine. When I first started on the MTB, it was a mental boxing match with myself to get off the big ring. My thought process was that the big ring equals speed. After a while, I learned that I had to change my thought process. Then came gravel and I had to figure out what my friends meant when they said "air down". And what they meant is that comfort is king. I am not racing on pavement with little to no deviation. I am on a surface that is naturally uneven. And by being more comfortable, I can actually go faster, even if the numbers tell me otherwise. It isn't easy for me to explain, obviously. But, for me, it is reality. I needed to change how I approached it, mentally. |

'Air down' is also helpful with going over and having better traction and control (and a degree of comfort) on rough terrain, at least that is my experience with MTB. Riding my MTB on 'real' trails vs gravel vs paved = 3 different pressures. |

I'm wondering if the GravelKing TLC (not small knob) or similar might be a decent option? I'm not sure that changing tire pressure for each gravel segment is an realistic option. |

This weekend is the least busy in quite a while. My sister has returned to town for a month or so. We'll see them this afternoon. That and some house stuff and a bike ride are all the plans for this weekend. I have been working on a 50+ mile multi surface loop around the area. I am so unmotivated at the moment that I bailed on building it out on RideWithGPS. Half of it has been figured out (Friday's ride). So, the weekend ride will be simply looking into the other half. I think I have it sort of planned, but I need to give it a test ride. Are y'all ready for winter to be over? |

Long ride on the trainer long run on the treadmill. I did get an update on my new bike. The last of the parts should be in on the 28th and then 4 days for the build and then shipped. So it looks like the first week of April. I'm hopping for a warm Spring so I can ride outside and without the trainer. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! I switched my workouts around due to questionable weather today. (We've had hail almost every day this week, including last night while I was in the pool). Trainer ride today, long run tomorrow. Not forecast to be sunny or warm tomorrow but hopefully no hail! (It is very common here in early spring and summer and is my nemesis!) Tuesday and next weekend are supposed to be nice. Spring break next week and come Friday I will supposedly be "immune"--hoping to get together with some (vaccinated) friends visiting from California and do an outdoor ride (first since December) next weekend if weather permits. Plus some shopping that's been postponed due to busy-ness at work and Covid fears. I finally found a sleeveless shortie wetsuit (online) to replace the one which is literally falling to pieces on me. I wear it in the pool fall through spring since the water's not quite warm enough and I freeze to death when I get out. Hoping it fits! (It's a men's XS but looks right according to the size chart. My current racing suit, from another company, is also a men's XS and fits great, so that does sometimes work for my body. We shall see!) Also need a bunch of other stuff, some tri-related and some not. I guess I will be spending my "stimulus"! Edited by Hot Runner 2021-03-20 5:28 PM |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! Originally posted by Hot Runner I switched my workouts around due to questionable weather today. We were just having this conversation with my in-laws. Choosing outings by who is vaccinated. I joked with them that we always told our kids that your friend group is important, but never imagined a vaccination would be part of the equation. Especially for those of us who have octogenarians, septuagenarians and people who are vulnerable in their lives. |

I missed the proof of life call on the weekend? Still kicking though. :D I took it easy over the weekend and really focused on getting more sleep each night, with some success. Good reminder about the wetsuit, Karen. I'd be amazed if I can still get mine on. Something to keep in mind if I try an event again. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! Still spendin' the stimulus. Two pairs new running shoes and replenished my stock of Trail Butter (almond butter/dark chocolate/espresso beans/sea salt mix) in hopes of outdoor rides in near future. Now I need a bike pump (mine disintegrated), socks (have been wearing same three pairs for a year?) and bike shorts (all are 5+ years old; chamois busted on one, one pair is transparent on the butt, the other was secondhand to begin with and they are too short--I only wear them on the trainer and under tights)! I think if I actually do replace all that I may get close to $600 (Wasn't that the last one? Are we on #2 or #3 now? It's all blurred together!) Plus the HR monitor and upload cord on my Garmin no longer work; if I ever actually race I need to put on an aerobottle I can actually use. (The one I have does nothing but eject and leak, and I have never successfully used it in a race. I use it to keep nutrition and workout cards in on the trainer.) Arrrgh! Mom and I literally have not shopped in person except for groceries and a few home maintenance essentials for over a year. It's ridiculous what's worn out! I guess I did pick up a few things (winter gloves, hand warmers) at the bike shop when Rover was in for a tune-up but that's it. Edited by Hot Runner 2021-03-22 5:00 PM |

Yeah, they are that old. I just ordered a new pair of bike shorts. I haven't been to a store to try on clothing in over a year. I can't say that I miss it, although at some point I expect NC State will call us back to the office and I will probably want to consider a less casual wardrobe. |
