DougRob - 2010-08-31 9:38 AM I am wondering what the MG thinks of the situation I am facing at the Nation's Triathlon in DC 9/12. Here is the deal:

Originally the bike route was suppose to cross into VA and be an out and back on the GW Parkway. For those that do not know the area, this is a parkway that  is 2 lanes wide in both directions. Turns out that they did not secure the permits so they have had to revert to last years course in MD (Clara Barton Parkway) which is much narrower. Last year reports said that it was CROWDED with 4000 racers. This year they have let in 7000 racers!!! Why would you do that before securing the permits???!!!

To easy things they are spacing the waves out more. There are 33 waves! I am in wave 32!! Transition closes at 6:55AM and I do not enter the water until 9:04 AM!! Two hours +!

Finally, the wave order makes very little sense to me:

1.        "Top wave" (elite?)
2.        "Cadets" (no idea)
3-5.     M 30-34
6-9      M 35-39
10-12  M 25-29
13-15  M 40-44
16       Relays (?)
17-18  F 40-44
19       F 45-49
20-21  M 50 and over
22       F 50 and over
23-24  F 30-34
25-27  F 25-29
28-29  F 35-39
30       M 24 & under
31-32  M 45-49
33       F 24 & under.

I have tried to discern the logic here and cannot figure it out. Before I learned most of this I discussed the race with my coach and we decided that I should race this at the pace I hope to maintain for the Augusta 1/2IM. Other than that and using it as a trainign day, I am not happy. I partially wish I could withdraw and get my money back. This race draws a LOT of 1st timers, and 7000 people on an olympic course is a recipe for disaster.

What do all of you think?

my 2 cents - not worth the risk of getting hurt in a wreck and not be able to do your HIM.  Set up your own course near where you live and do a race pace effort there instead of rolling the dice...  Besides, how good is your race pace going to be on the bike when you cannot help but draft people...

I agree with Andy unless you have your heart set on this race.  From my view you are starting in the back of the 7,000 in the swim.  But with your biking you are going to be passing a ton of people.  If it is a very "beginner" friendly course you are going to have to be on high alert for not only the huge numbers you are passing but also the risk of folks not too aware of safety.     Keep your eye on the big prize.....Augusta!

I posted on the Nation's Tri FB pae and they replied that they based the waves on the number of people in them. I still don't get that. I am disappointed that they would almost double the capacity before securing permits for a safer route. Very bad planning.

My family lives in MD and so this is a visit with them in conjunction with the race. Maybe I'll set an alarm watch and take a nap for those 2 hours. Laughing

just from reading what you and tony are posting, i would not risk all the training, fee's and the race itself at augusta for the apparent increase in risk on this crowded race filled with novices.   just not worth it.  consider the registration fees a donation.

i understand B2B HIM registration opens back up tomorrow morning.  register for it!

HAHA I was waiting for that response.  Thats just what I have been told in the past why they will put the womens AG's before the men AG's.

Actually John, after Augusta I am considering the Washington Half on 10/30. It is the same venue as the Washington Olympic. The swim is almost the same, it is two loops of the bike course and a different, flat out and back run. This venue is great and The transition area is right next to the water. Furthermore the town is great about the race and really appreciates the influx of $ to the economy.

I'll see how I feel.

As far as DC goes, there is the additional factor of my family and my wife's family in the area. D'Arvit!! (curse word from Artemus Fowl books).

Caution....Training Related Question Below:

I have been considering getting a deep tissue sports massage a couple of days before my next race to work out some knots from the season.  I have done the post race massage a couple of times but never before race massage.  Anybody have any input?

How many days before?  Worth it?  How much muscle soreness can I expect?  Etc.

Thanks....

Dino

How has your body reacted to deep tissue work before? will you use the same therapist?

I get frequent body work, but I know the therapists well and I know how I will react post massage.  If it's new to you OR you don't know who is going to be working on you, I would not advice deep work the week of a race.  Too risky.  If you can get something done this week and you trust the person doing it, I think it can be very helpful.  If not, I would do manual work myself (e.g. Trigger point), do an espom salts/baking soda bath and either get a feel-good massage or wait for post race.

I think I'm glad I did not sign up!  Tony and I did the race as a relay 2 years ago when it was 2500/3000 people.  Relays went late so everyone was on the bike course and it ran up Canal (Clara Barton).  it was crazy crowded and the purple people eaters did not help matters.

Good luck!  Stay safe - don't expect a bike PR.

OK, now that made me laugh out loud! I have absolutely no intention of seeking a PR on the bike. I am going to try to ride at least 1-2 mph slower than my average to see if my run improves as it has been lousy all year.

Canada general entry is now full. Went on this morning at ~~8MST this morning and could still get in. I went on now and its full.

Thoughts from the weekend:
- meeting Sister Madonna was cool. Heard she had a wetsuit issue, and received a new one the day before the race, and for whatever reason she didn't end up finishing the swim.
- Michelle & I got a quick meet and greet with Tracy nice before race. Didnt get to meet up race day, was crazy!

- Race Day was awesome. Seeing ~3k people mass start on the beach was an amazing site.
Then jumped over to Main Street and watched them all leave transition. What a supportive town. People everywhere.
Went for ride, and then met up with my teammates who weren't racing to watch for our guys/gals the last 2k on the bike.  Had a great spot(Cherry Lane Mall for Ryan/Steve). Got the runners at 5k as well going out.

Finish Line Catcher role was soooooo unreal. I Will totally do it again someday. What an ispiring place to be.  I saw/helped finishers from 12:30-17hrs. So many neat people and stories. A few people totally made my cry when talking with them. One guy totally hit home for me. Told me about how he kit a 'funk' in his life. gained a bunch of weight, etc, etc. Now he had lost the lbs and how' important today was for him'. I then walked him over to wife and young kids. I'm almost tearing up writing that again.
1 guy at 16:59:50 and another at 16:59:53. Still tons of people there. Great, great atmopshere.
Really enjoyed catching me teammates. All  catchers were good about letting others go catch people they knew. It was surreal catching buddies who you've trained all year with. Helping them through the medals/pics/food and then talking to them about their day was very, very motivating. Michelle said she saw me a few times on the local TV feed popping into the picture.
Weather was unusually cool. Had a bunch of rain and wind on the ride.

Sign up- got there early. they said 9-11 sign up. I got there at 7:00ish. It was already open for volunteers. Waited about 45 minutes and then BOOM i was front of line. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have a major know in my tummy when the waved me to the table. And then :

Dear Trevor
Congratulations! You are now registered for 2011 IM Canada On-Site

Let it begin!!!

I'm signed up for this race too, if I knew that there were 7000 racers I wouldn't have signed-up as well.  When I was looking for a race, my main attraction to do the Nation's was location and that the bike used 2 lanes out and back.  I did the New York City Tri last year with 5-6000ish people and it was dangerously crowded on the bike, 3-4 people trying to pass at once while trying to avoid the opposite traffic.  From my understanding the new DC course also has many sharp turns..  To me sharp turns and 1000's of people sounds disastrous..  Doug, since this isn't your A race, and your time sucks I would second guess doing this race too.  Unfortunately this is my A race and my last race of the season.  The only good thing for me is my start time is 7:20 so hopefully the bike course isn't as crowded when I start the bike since it's mainly the elite/pros and the young and fast 30 yr olds ahead of me..  BTW my bib # is 1084..

Ditto on the fact that last year the bike traffic was crazy with less than half the participants of this year.  And I too was looking forward to GW Parkway.  Not happy about these developments...

Finished up my month today. I clearly lost the "multi" part of "multisport" this month. But that's what happens with kids home and no camps and a few trips. It's all good. Now that they are in school I hope to find my bike a few times before fall -weather sets in, but will be working around the run schedule as that takes priority right now. No desire to get up for 5:30am swims, so I likely won't see too much of the pool, but never say never. I LOVE to swim after long runs -- feels soooooo good on the ankles and hip flexors.

Onward to September!!!

Trev--how did I totally miss you decided to sign up for IM Canada??? awesome!  How's Michelle?

Kyla-you could stop going to the pool until your 45 and still be a near sub one hour IM'er....and you should be avoiding multi, your getting ready to BQ Woman!

Doug/Stan--an Oly that size is crazy.  I don't even like 2500 HIMs....stay safe and don't fall asleep waiting for your wave to be called.

The man and I are off to Minocqua in the morning until Monday..for me it'll be the perfect place to hang with non IM WI stressed out people, grab some additional sleep and get to know Paul again.....
