Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mayhem Part Deux - 2017 Edition Hope you are feeling better, Stacey! Migraines sux! I had them until I was a teenager, figured out that they were mostly triggered by certain foods and additives and learned to avoid them. I seemed to outgrow them with really occasional ones, usually triggered by dehydration, bright light, or, sadly, wine, for almost thirty years. Then in the last year and a half, they've come back--about one every six months. Every time it involves the same combined set of factors--30-45 minutes after swimming in a pool (never in open water); hard workout with short repeats (100m and under) and minimal rest; bright light (natural or man-made) while swimming or after or both; either warm water, very hot air temps, or both; hungry after workout. That's 5 or 6 possible triggers--no idea which one fires the gun or if it's the combo. I had them a couple of times after hot run races as a teenager, so guessing it probably has something to do with overheating. The one time I managed to get to the clinic while having one, after being poked and prodded by a GP, neurologist, cardiologist, and opthamologist, the only thing they could find was slightly elevated temperature and white cell counts. At the time they said I was probably coming down with something, but I never got sick. I think the temp and blood counts were just from training and heat stress; somehow the chlorine or lights put me over the edge. I've told my coach I won't do big sets of hard 100's with minimal rest anymore, no matter what the fitness benefits, especially if water is too warm. The migraines come with dramatic visual effects (plus my eyes sometimes itch and water uncontrollably) and are just too scary, and not safe if I have to drive. Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Manatee Mayhem Part Deux - 2017 Edition Oh no, sorry you weren't able to race Stacey! Glad you listened to your body though. I had a pretty good 10-miler, not really a "race" for me but a training run (race report here). Had a lot of volume on my legs, including 8 miles the day before that inexplicably left my legs super fatigued. Not sure what I was thinking signing up for two race weekends in a row - I've got a half marathon on Saturday |

And Stacey I hope you are feeling better too. I get them but luckily not as often and doesn't sound quite as bad. The worst one was a few years back and our AC wasn't working - middle of the summer. All I could do was lay in a dark room with the pillows over my eyes - for 2 days. Anyway - happy Monday (said no one ever). |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Manatee Mayhem Part Deux - 2017 Edition Originally posted by mtnbikerchk I have gotten them all of my life. They got worse and more regular when I hurt my neck doing gymnastics at school when I was 14. I have learned to manage them. About 5 years ago they got really bad, often causing numbness down the entire right side of my body, and became fairly frequent. Originally posted by Hot Runner Hope you are feeling better, Stacey! All I could do was lay in a dark room with the pillows over my eyes - for 2 days. Anyway - happy Monday (said no one ever). I just happened to see a different doctor to get a new script for the contraceptive pill one day (sorry if this is an over share) and the new Dr said that the pill I had been taking for 15+ years was known to cause strokes in women who suffered from migraines and that I should never have been prescribed it and that I was lucky that I have very low blood pressure, otherwise I would have most likely had a stroke. Needless to say the new Dr changed my medication and the frequency of my migraines dropped dramatically. About 18 months ago they got more frequent again possibly because of the really high level of stress that I was experiencing with work. I ended up having my daith pierced (its one of the smaller parts of cartilage inside the ear) and the frequency and severity of the migraines dropped right off. I went from having around 2 a month to having 3 or 4 in a 12 month period, and they were really minor to the point that i took a couple of anti-inflammatory as soon as my vision started to impair and I was able to function relatively normally, the light sensitivity and the next day hang over didn't happen. Since having the piercing done I have only ended up with 2 migraines that have put me to bed and thankfully I have been able to function the next day. Interestingly Karen I often used to get migraines after swim training both when they got bad as an adult and as a teenager. To be fair when I was a teenager I used to do swim training every morning so you cant really count them. But when I started doing tris and swimming 2 times a week I would often end up with them on swim days. I put it down to the excessive temperature that they used to heat the pool to because when I changed pools it wasn't such an issue. |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: Manatee Mayhem Part Deux - 2017 Edition Stacey, good to see you've had notable improvement at least. There was a few year stretch I had more mild to moderate ones, but still migraine. Some of the simplest lights could set things off. A training session at work did, so I had to write in a complaint about it. Couldn't finish it and had to write in about it. Messed up the rest of the work day. Also had fun with the alarm system tests, which had sharp flashing lights. Had to exit the building whether it was a drill or now. Covering my face didn't help. Through few doctors, it was traced down to some allergies heightening things (also causing substantial congestion), and significant tightness in the trapezius muscles. That had come on from swimming a bunch, this was before masters, so didn't know what I was doing as well. Had some medical massages prescribed to work things out. First time in it felt like I had steel cables running through the muscles, things were just that tight. |

If you don't mind what is Mantatee Mayhem? Congratulations on your #6 and future #7! Tracy Welcome Tracy! Feel free to join in the thread. Chris said it best over in Thread 1. I'll copy his post below. Welcome to the Manatees. We are all mentors and mentees, which sounds like manatees--hence our name. Some iteration of this group has been going on for over 11 seasons and I've lost track of what season we are in! All experience levels and goals welcome. We have not-yet-triathletes, multiple-iron finishers, runners, bikers and swimming specialists. We are everything from beginners to veterans, and everyone in between. Our training philosophies, gear, locations, and methods are similarly varied. We are very committed to health and to each other. We are an extremely supportive and very active group, as Janyne likes to say, inactive Manatees make us sad. Please check in (even to admit you're procrastinating or overwhelmed) and be passionate. Keeping up your training log here on BT and opening it to other group members is mandatory. This helps us all connect through messages such as Inspires and PM's, which some of us do on a regular basis. (If you don't know how, we'll help you). We have members that have been here a while and really know how this site works. We are ready and willing to help guide you through the wealth of resources found on BT. We also use a variety of other tools, such as Strava, Instagram, and other Social Media sites to encourage, support, and get to know each other better. We believe the journey is the reward, and look forward to having you as a fellow traveler and a friend. As always, any former Manatees are welcome at any time. To join, Please respond to this message and include (or later add) your bio. |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mayhem Part Deux - 2017 Edition I'm not sure if this fits as an exciting new gear purchase or self loathing plan to torture myself over the winter. Either way I bought a new trainer for my bike. After 10 years of the "generic" mag trainer, the bolt that holds the bike in started to corrode. I figure better safe and I wanted something better. I bought a CycleOps Fluid trainer. The upgrade is unbelievable! It is a much smoother ride and gives more consistent resistance and it is a lot quieter. With this purchase, I officially declare my off season! Plus the weather here has been so nasty, I don't want to do anything outside. Edited by JBacarella 2017-10-27 7:28 AM |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mayhem Part Deux - 2017 Edition Congrats on the self-torture purchase! When I'm in Vietnam, probably 95% of my biking is on the CycleOps fluid trainer. Very nice consistency of resistance, very durable (mine has held up for almost five years in the tropics), and not too loud. Their magnetic trainers are actually not bad either--I have one at home in the US. Biking outdoors is such a production here (have to start at first light so as not to get caught in rain or fry one's brains, have to carry massive amounts of water or find somewhere to buy it, homicidal traffic, standing water and lots of debris on roads, random burning of brush and garbage roadside, etc.), that I actually prefer the trainer. I don't have to maintain the hypervigilance that I do outside--I can just turn on a video of cyclists riding somewhere nice, put on some music, and crank away at the workout. |
