Don't feel bad Glen, I have been trying to get this technique for the past few years! Yes that's right Barry, we don't all swim like that or we'd all be doing our HIM splits in 30 minutes like you and Chris! I learned something at my last lesson that I hope will help, if it does work I will impart my learning experience to those of us struggling...but until then, I will keep it to myself, as I would hate to mess anyone else up.

DougRob - 2009-12-20 11:22 PM Question: Does anyone do any specific strectches for the hamstrings after long runs? I am not too sore today, but my hammys are tighter than I would like. I am curious if there are things others are doing to counter this tightness.

Thanks.

And Steve great job on the run today!

Doug

Thanks Doug...I have better results with an ice bath than with just stretching.  I really don't use ice (except for the dead of summer with runs over 15 miles) but I just use the coldest setting on the tub.  Fill it to just cover the the tops of the thighs, grab a warm drink and something to read and sit there and scream for 10-15 minutes.  Then jump into a hot shower to warm up and try to locate all of the missing/hiding "parts" and you are done.  It REALLY works for me and is soooo much better than any stretches I have ever done.

SSMinnow - 2009-12-21 7:00 AM Happy Monday Kids!

Last week was a great bike week, hitting nearly 10 hours on the CT.  The upcoming week is all about the SWIM!  I am not naturally a swimmer, but someone is trying to get me there....doubles in the pool three times this week.  I thought about crying, but decided to embrace it instead.  Today is a rest day for me to get the bonescan done.  Should have results by early afternoon.  That will dictate my running future heading into the New Year.

Enjoy the day,
Suzy

PS. I have to admit, I did not like seeing the MG half way down the page either.  Do your part people!

Best of luck on the scan today my friend.

Good morning all.  I am at work with you Rob Cry  Keep me company thru Wednesday please.  Looks like there were a lot of great workouts this weekend.  Congratulations everyone.

For the past 5 minutes I have been sitting at my desk reading posts about swim form and looking like a complete idiot trying to "work" on my stroke while sitting at my desk.

I was looking at my total distances from last year to this and I am so excited!!  I have more than doubled my swim and run distances and gone over 450 miles farther on the bike.  Can't wait to see what 2010 has in store!!!

Stan, sounds like Santa was very good to you this year.  Enjoy that CT!  Hopefully there aren't any cop cars making right turns in front of you on any of the programs.  Hope your bone scan goes well Suzy and it is all good news.  Glad the house is feeling better Sam and Tony.  Enjoy the snow for me.  It looks like Birdy and I are in for a wet, rainy Christmas. Yuck!   I've decided if it isn't going to snow then I want 75 degrees. None of this 50 and rainy crap.

Tracy

x2 on the ice-less cold bath after  a long run.  Works well for me to minimize the impact of all the pounding during the run.

Maybe this webpage is familiar to some but I didnt know about it until a few mos. ago - an animated swimmer demonstrating the stroke - the posts talking about elbows and hand orientation made me think of this demo.

Send the 50F and rainy crap to Wisconsin! You can have our 19 inches of snow with more predicted on Christmas day.

PS. As of 9am, I am officially radioactive.
PPS. I am basically off of work until 1/4/10.

Agree.  Here is the key to the ice bath for me:  I get in the water first, and then add the ice.  it makes the transition to the water more bearable.  And I then sit for 10-15 minutes.  It is amazing how refreshed my legs feel afterwards.

Interesting video.  Do a lot of you break your hand at the wrist when you start your pull like on the video?  And this swimmer doesn't look like he bends his elbow much underwater.  Is that correct or just the image?  I use to pull with a straighter arm and it hurt my shoulder.  Now I have about a 90 degree bend at the elbow under water but the line from elbow to fingertips is straight, i.e. no bend at the wrist. Am I doing it wrong?  Also, how does one get that much hip rotation?  I am trying but........

Hey wait a minute...30 minutues?  That would be more like 25, but you could have dropped a stick in the water and let it float down and it would have probably gotten a 27 minute split.   Current can do wonders for a swim.

Yesterday we had a n incident where my grandson was [layiong fel down and got a big gah on his head. After a 6 hours wiat at emerg they put in 5 staples. I haven't atlke d to my daughter yet this mornign as it was 3:00 Am before they got home. I think all is Ok he's a tough little guy and head injusries always bleed more that others.

Any way I am one of the "lucky" one who has to work through the Christmasee holiday season. So for all of you who are with me smile and enjoy. For those of you not working. Well what are you doing readingthis you should be working out.

Let's have a great week everyone.

My mostest favoritest thing to do after a long run is to lie on the floor on my back with my butt against the wall with my legs up the wall. When I am super-duper tight after a long run my legs don't quite go straight. It feels awesome to get the blood out of your feet. I'll lay there for awhile and stretch by opening my legs, or doing some pigeon and leg crossing. After a few minutes my legs loosen up and I can straighten them. I also just breathe deeply when I do this -- sort-of go Yoga/meditation with it. It's really relaxing and does help when you are tightened beyond belief!

Hey there Janet (was a page or so ago)

Just got done with my run today, lol newspaper bags over the socks are great.  Ran on road, snow, ice, slush and a bit of pavement.

Weather still chilly here, sun is out but temps are still cold, no where really for the snow to go, huge piles of it everywhere.

I was working on the EVF in front of the computer yesterday also.  If work is open tomorrow I will be hitting the pool to try it out.  Pretty sure I muscle my way through the swim way too much, need to work on a bit more finesse.

Ice Baths--- Set the water for pretty cold, get in settle in the have your better 1/2 dump ice into the tub.  Sit in there for 15 minutes and Cry like a baby w/ a warm drink.  Works great!  I love hate it, but it REALLY WORKS!

I loved "Born to Run" and recommended it, but I have been thinking about the Tarumara (sic) tribe. I wonder if they are ALL such good runners, or did the author only see the elite runners of the tribe(s)? It may be that the tribe members that were not such good runners with naturally good mechanics gave it up and the only ones that the author saw running the "natural" way were the ones who were naturally predisposed to that style of running, and therefore successful.

I don't know the answer. I think it will be interesting over the next 2-5 years to see how runners that are adopting the Vibrim 5 fingers and other similar shoes fare in their results and their incidence of injury.

That being said the book was Awesome! I like it better than Running with the Buffalos. I am in the middle of "The Perfect Mile." It is very good as well. (About Bannister, Santee and Landy's attempts to break the 4 minute mile.) Man how the world has changed in 55 years!

Andy- Thanks for providing the "links" for all of us.

Ben- Welcome back!  Sorry about your lose, but you sound like you are on a roll w/ life, and I am sure that is what both of your grandpa's would want!  Hang in there, and race this year w/ a purpose (for them!)....

Jenna-SCHWEET!  Promo's are always good.... Don't let it get in the way of your BT TIME!

Stan- Love the Computrainer!  It will make a big difference in the way you train now!  (pm'd you on your cyclops for a friend).

Tony- Go w/ the Xterra full for $199.  I think that you will be fine.  Just because Emilio is on Slowtwitch all the time doesn't mean you need to shop with him !  Xterra makes great suits from what I understand.  I have know several people that went w/ the sleeveless for $99 and have been very happy.

Doug- 12.5 on the treadmill!??  Good for you.  Tht is great, but sounds like w/ the weather over there you better get used to spending some time indoors?

William- Nice work on your run as well.  I am glad you have "fixed" the problems you have had w/ nutrition

Steveo- Nice work on your run as well! (Geez- Everyone is killing it!)

Rob- Sorry about the gradson hope he is ok?  (I am with you at work this week- Sort of in/out of the office type thing until Wed.)

Suzy- I always give you a hard time, but best of luck today!!!!!  Enjoy vaca, and 2 feet of snow!

I own a full sleeve wetsuit and it pulls on my shoulders, tried 2 or 3 others, even the top of the line synergy which is a $550 wetsuit and they all still bother me.

The thought behind the 2 piece is that it won't do that., nothing to do with marketing at all.  Though have yet to ever hear a bad word about any desoto gear so that doesn't hurt either.

I have a line on a year old demo one selling for $300 that I might get, not sure.
