Bad news, it is a stress fracture of the 4th metatarsal.  I am beyond devastated.  I haven't talked to my sports med doctor or PT, but I do know it means many more weeks without running and a change to my Spring racing calendar.

That it's from me....gonna sign off for now and try to pull myself together.

Don't get too wound out yet Suzy - maybe the docs know something you don't....  Maybe there's a new treatment protocol or something - maybe an orthotic - keep your chin up!

So sorry to hear about thatFrown...take the time to get it healed right.  Sounds like you will have a chance to do lots of biking and work on that swim some more (if you don't OD on swimming this week Smile

Checked out your blog pics based on what John posted...too funny!

What a weekend...some amazing runs out there.

Suzy, sorry about the fracture.  It's not much consolation, but at least you know which means you can start fixing it now.  Adversity either makes us weaker or makes us stronger...I'm confident which side you'll come out on.

Suzy,

Have no fear.  You have such a strong running base, that when you get back into it, you will be fine!  It is going to be hard, but there are 2 other sports to master!  This is a "good" thing!  Look how far you have come in your cycling, and swimming?!

However, saying that- Sorry this happened, but I think personally think you'll be just fine (physically).  Mentally is another story!

Sorry to hear that Suzy. It has happened to me twice during the Spring both times, I just focused on the other sports.  It is only temporary and you will be back!!

So sorry to hear that Suzy. But if anyone has the discipline required to follow a recovery plan it's you.  Focus on the time this allows you to work on bike and swim form and I second what Birdy said about returning strong with your favorite event.  We are here for you sweety.

Suzy:

Just look at as your coach is telling you that your run is strong enough and now you have to bring your swim /bike up to that level. And at least you are not running Boston in 2010.

So sorry Suzy... Ugh. The mental toughness of being grounded from running is so hard!! But you will heal! And better to know the demons you are fighting, so there is that bright side.

On another topic, loved reading Born to Run!! And yes, Jenn Shelton is the major bad-. But I gotta say, I was not overly sympathetic to their plight when they got lost and ran out of water and everything. I mean, it's one thing to be a bad- and another to be, well, stupid. That said I'd still love to run like her. And Ann Trason too. I found the book so inspiring. Didn't make me ready to ditch my running shoes (I've mostly been injury-free, so I'm not about to go monkeying with that at this point)... but it did make me think about the sheer joy of running. On days when I feel it, I run faster. On days when I'm forcing it, I don't so much. I can't imagine just going out and running and not clocking miles and splits and such, cuz I'm a little OCD with that. But I'm envious of those who can just go and run and come home 20 miles later feeling happy. A 20-miler, for me, involves planning of route, water, nutrition, sleep, family, etc. Definitely not something I do on a whim. But then again my 20-milers take a heckuva lot longer than Shelton's take!!

So sorry Suzy.  As everyone said, I guess now you can really put the time into the bike (hopefully, with the new ride) and swim.  When you return, you'll be truly an even more incredible triathlete.  You can already run like the wind and ride like you have a turbo charger.  Now it's time to learn to swim like a fish!  Hang in there.

OK, I am starting to love swimming again.  3000 (3x1000) meters today in an hour.  Not fast, but I got it done and I feel great.  I think I might max it out right there for awhile.  At this point, I don't see the need to go any longer.  I was going to jump on the bike today, but I think I will save that for tomorrow.  I'm going to throw in a movie and go for a couple hours.

John,
Thanks for that link.  It was cool to see the face behind Caballo....kind of how I pictured him too.  I enjoyed reading that book, I can't imagine running an ultra barefoot or in sandals.

Suzy - So sorry to hear about your stress fracture. That's really a bummer, but hey...looks like you'll be spending a lot more time in the pool and on the bike until it heals

Everyone - I am really starting to enjoy my swims and my endurance is increasing each time in the water. My breathing is getting better and I only have to stop to rest a couple of times for about 15 seconds in the course of swimming 500 yards. Can't believe it, but I love it!!! I feel soooooo good after my swims.

Question: I need a wet suit. I have no idea about which brand to get, or if I should get a one piece or two piece? Long or short sleeves?

I'm still drooling over some of the road bikes at my local bicycle shop. I wish I were rich. I want one so badly.

So I was all busy feeling sorry for myself when I got a call from Paul about our best friend Bob.  He suffered a major seizure and collapsed last night due to an aneurism.  He is intensive care. Prognosis unknown. He has a heart condition and is on a ton of blood thinners.  A bad situation.  It suddenly made me realize how small my stress fracture was in comparision.  My feel-sorry-for-myself attitude was totally uncalled for. Sooooooo..... I'm done throwing a tantrum, pitching a fit and crying.  I'm back with a vengeance all in the span of 4 hours.

So then the doctor calls and this is what he told me: put all my energy into biking and swimming at same or increased level, no running for two weeks/can start slow build on January 4th (I thought it was going to be another six), don’t wear any soft soled shoes, follow up with my PT on gait analysis/running protocol and to stay positive.  He suggested Steve and I review my race calendar to make sure there wasn’t too much stress too early in the season to avoid any issues with his favorite race and my debut, IMWI.

My gosh, I think I caused myself several additional grey hairs and one or two wrinkles for all of this drama. I'm a total dork.

For all you new people, I normally am the stable one in the group. Really!

Suzy

Happy Monday evening all.  I couldn't get on all day, crazy at work.  I'll get caught up soon, seems there are two pages added for every one I read on this board.

I felt really tired today.  I got my early morning swim in, but scrapped my run for the day.  My legs need a rest anyway.

Anyone who is traveling this week, Happy Holidays, and have a safe trip.

Don't forget about those Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Coasties and Airmen who will not be spending the holidays with their families because they are serving abroad.   God bless them, their families and our great country.

Wet suit  - Depends mostly on how much you want to spend and what your tolerance is for water temps.  I am going to be buying another one in a week or so..  I am going with the xterra sleeveless...  Just need to keep the core warm and there are so few wetsuit legal swims that I can't see spending $300 or more on one...  Besides, my arms stay warm due to the amount of splashing about that I do and I am fairly well "naturally" insulated as well.

I have a full XTERRA but have only used it a couple times.  It works well for me.  I was going to rent one for a race for $45.00 when they offered to sell me the same suit for $99.00, brand new.  No brainer for me.  They are always running specials.  Keep your eyes open and you will see them.  I regularly get emails from them too.  I'll forward you one if I get one.  Actually I'm thinking about getting a speedsuit from them for my non wetsuit legal races.

Uh oh, Here we go again.  Since it has been awhile since I have done it, I will make everyone aware, that I have this habit of double posting.  I hit submit then remember I forgot to put something else and when I continue typing... bam!  DP.  It's kind of like a shank it golf terms.
