Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Originally posted by melbo55 Originally posted by IndoIronYanti Totally random post (in keeping with Manateehood) but also very relevant to OWS (in keeping with actual manatees) ... I kind of pooh-poohed the open-water coach & official course I'm doing because it's online ... that was before I realized how comprehensive it is. There's actually a staggering amount of information presented in the modules (online presentations), links (articles and videos), and the textbook (which I owned and have read, but still). I was wondering why Shelley Taylor-Smith (probably the greatest OWSer of all time, tied with Lynne Cox maybe) gave it such a rousing endorsement and now I know why. ANYHOW, because I'm finding myself laid up, I have "time" to do a lot of back-burner stuff (so why am I TEN race reports behind?!) ... and frankly, the virtual narrator for the online course is still one of the creepiest things I've ever seen. Gives me the heebie-jeebies each time. I turn the sound off, but her awful face is still there. Yup, she's creepy. OMG agreed! |

Champion 10550 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) I just got a list of clothing I should either wear or have with me for tomorrow... looks like I'm bringing the TYR transition bag with me for all this stuff! Just for a bit of background... it's the managing partner of the law firm that I work for that talked me into this - no matter that I have no skis, boots, poles, and have only x-country skied ONCE before in my life in Riga, Latvia. Oh well, I'll have fun, get a LOT of exercise done (there's also a clinic after the race), and maybe this will help me hate winter a little less? Okay, probably not to the last one, but that's fine. Race goals: (1) don't die; (2) get to the finish line eventually should goal #1 hold true Also, no chance for the Enabler to strike as he's not invited! Ha!

I've only been skiing 2 or 3 times in my life, but each time it required skis, boots and poles. Hope you find some or this race may be harder than you think |

Skiing (Nordic or Alpine - but the former fits better with training) is one of the few things that can transform winter from a total SLOG to, well, a sub-total slog (lower case). I'm in the midst of getting my family hooked, as there is a fantastic set of trails just up the road. It's still not a fall run in crisp air through a foliage covered forest, but it beats the heck out of cursing a nice blanket of snow. I hope you enjoy it! Oh, and if you've skied in Latvia, you should totally rock the course. Latvian snow is well known as the most technically challenging… CRUSH IT! Matt |

Doc takes my BP and HR and his eyes kinda pop. "Oh crap, I can't use these numbers. If I write down a HR of 43, they'll make you do all sorts of tests to prove you don't have a cardiac condition. Your HR is 50." Or something about to that effect. I'm too healthy! Yay, health! Matt |

Matt I just watched a bunch of YouTube videos of the course and what I can look forward to... hills will be a new challenge since the course in Riga was absolutely FLAT. However, as you pointed out, the snow in Riga is WAAAAAYYYYY more technically challenging, so I should be fine and still kick butt! |

46 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Originally posted by jmkizer Originally posted by awalden22 Originally posted by mcmanusclan5 Yeah, I can't actually move, but it's fun to think about. Unless of course I got a new job, then I would move. My husband and I talked pretty seriously about moving to Australia for a couple of years awhile back, but it never happened. It's not off my radar though. Then I think back to my honeymoon in Tahiti..average temp is 75-80 all year long. So without moving out of the United States, I guess my next best bet to coming close to Tahiti would be Hawaii. So that's what I would choose Originally posted by awalden22 It's snowing again here in the midwest and temps in the negatives again tomorrow! Ugh I hate winter! So my obvious solution - I need to move. Where should I move to? Somewhere warm and sunny all year round! We keep looking, but so far haven't found the right place (mind you, we've lived in Cleveland a couple times over the years - my wife is also from that area - and it helps to lower the bar for other places as far as weather is concerned. Great city, but not great weather!). San Diego is nice, but not for us. I'd do San Francisco, but you need to be gazillionaire these days to live there. Just don't know Arizona well, but I have heard it's a long way from salt water (kind of important to me - almost moved to Boulder, but same knock on it). Mid-Altantic gets swampy-hot (lived in Philly for 6 years) … and on and on. So, where is the perfect place? Maybe Nice or somewhere in Australia, but for now - it's wherever I can get outside to ride! Would love to hear where people would live if there were no constraints on them (San Francisco is up there for me, as is splitting the year between the New England coast and someplace warm and sunny (with great fishing) in the winter (HI, the Med., etc.). But that's not happening (money, kids and family tether us happily to MA for now). Where would you live? Matt Remind us, what do you do for a living? Janyne - I am a medical laboratory scientist. I work in a molecular biology lab. I am wanting to get out of the lab environment though and get into the sales side of things. So that's why I mentioned if I get a new job, because I may be looking come this summer Ashley |

While American snow may not be as technically challenging as its Latvian cousin, "It may be more blinding and melty," say Arizonian snow experts. I think you should show up with one of these and tell them it's the closest you could get to skis. Mush, Managing Partner! Mush! |

My computer is pretty much dead, so I've been trying to post from my iPad or when I can steal DH's laptop at night. I'm also way busier in the new job than I was in the old one! It's really interesting, but super busy. |

I don't know if Judi posted, but this is a marathon runner and mom of 3 was killed by a drunk driver Monday morning in Richmond. She was a member of the same marathon training team as me, and it's so frustrating and sad. The outpouring of support, however, is pretty amazing.
If you do run tomorrow, you can log where you ran and how much you ran. There's lots of info on the Facebook page. |

Master 1970 Somewhere on the Tennessee River | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) I wasn't near a computer when the sign up for IM Chattanooga opened and it sold out way fast. Been considering what others races to do. Was bummed out that I didn't sign up in time. Can't afford the charity slots. So I have decided to volunteer at IMChatt. After all Chattanooga is only two hours up river by car and about 10 hours by sailboat. I have never lived there but have been more than a few times so I know it fairly well. I will either camp out at one of the local campgrounds if I drive or stay at the marina. Hmm, thinking more on it I might just rent or borrow a houseboat. That would make a nice staging area. It would make a great long weekend vacation for me. I haven't had a real vacation in quite some time. Family situation has made it hard to bug out for more than a day. *Must remember to balance the Yin with the Yang.* Sign-up for volunteering starts until Feb. 1st. IM Chattanooga is Sept 14. I've got time to finalize plans.
P.S. Does anyone know how to edit the races that one is planning to do on this site?
Top of the mornin' to you all. Time to hit the trainer. It's 23 F now. Yes it will warm up to about 50 F this afternoon but I am reserving that for kayaking or sailing.
