Thanks everyone.  Man what a crappy deal.  Karen, I agree, it is somehow different when it is a younger person.

My friend is doing as well as can be expected.  Appreciate positive thoughts and prayers for her and his family.

Originally posted by StaceyK I had a great race with E yesterday. Mum isn't able to run at the moment because of her knee so she has been volunteering doing first aid at the finish line. The course was great, there were hills but nowhere like in the last event and there was plenty of flat this time too. The people who run this race are great. After the last event (3weeks ago) they got feedback that people had friends that would love to trail run but the amount of hills in the courses was too daunting and the 12k distance is too much for them. So they have added a shorter, flatter course to each of the remaining events that they have scheduled for the summer. The first one was yesterday, and even though they had only organised it in the last 2-3 weeks they still managed to have medals for everyone that did they shorter course - they were different to the ones we got, they may have been last year's (there is an advantage to not putting a date on the medals) but they still had the name of the event on them which I thought was great. This is the "mega medal" that the five events in the series makes up. I am missing piece 2 as we're ran Dopey that weekend. Piece 5 happens in 2 weeks.

Very cool medal and RO!

Time for another round of questions from Chris

Some of the answers I saw to earlier questions alluded to coaches. Some were a bit detailed, some less so. Anyway, here are the questions and I have to admit, this one has been rolling around in my brain since my sister (runner turned workout enthusiast) hired a coach.

  • What type of Coaching are you getting, ie tri specific or more all inclusive (weight training, weight loss, or other focus)?
  • Is it what you had hoped or expected?
  • What would you do differently?

  • What type of Coaching are you getting, ie tri specific or more all inclusive (weight training, weight loss, or other focus)?

Tri specific during tri season; more strength training during off season.

  • Is it what you had hoped or expected?

Yes; I mostly wanted someone to write a plan specific to me, my abilities, limiters and goals.  I get unlimited communication, so if I have questions about workouts or how to amend/change it's not an issue.  As I mentioned, it has developed into a friendship/training partnership as well, but the unlimited communication is part of the deal.  She is not a huge cheerleader, but I don't need that.  I think she probably is for some of her other clients, especially the ones for whom she is doing personal training rather than tri specific.  I know that she went out on a trail run on her off day with one of her clients who was struggling with confidence with an upcoming race.

  • What would you do differently?

Not anything that I can think of.

Finally replying to Chris' inquiry:

  • What type of Coaching are you getting, ie tri specific or more all inclusive (weight training, weight loss, or other focus)?  Tri-specific but he occasionally throws in some sport-relevant strength exercises to remind me how pathetic my upper body strength is
  • Is it what you had hoped or expected?  This is my second full season with him and I had a few months of working with him the year prior, but this is my first HEALTHY season with him.  We worked around my Achilles issue last year.  But to answer your question, overall the experience is more than I expected.  I've made internet friends with some of the others in the coaching group and the  positives and support of the group component was unexpected since most are out of my immediate area.  Coach Josh himself was better than expected overall but sometimes had me in the lurch by not being punctual posting workouts.  This year he is (knocks on all the wood!) being very punctual at posting which is wonderful!
  • What would you do differently?  Eh, nothing that I can really think of.  I'm really looking forward to what this season may bring.

Question: kids' goggles.  Are they one brand/size/whatever fits all or are their little faces as tough to fit as some adults?  I have gotten the green light to take my great-nephew to beginner swim lessons but he needs goggles.

How old is he? I take my almost 3 yr old to swim class once a week and he hates it . He actually only really hates going under the water. I tried putting goggles on him but he seemed to hate the idea of that even more than me occasionally dunking him. If you have success with your little one please share!

My kids took swim lessons when they were young and swam on a little youth team when they were young. They have both one size fits all and sizes based on age. So the answer is yes.

I saw that USAT has an article about binge-worthy TV for trainer/treadmill. I'll save you some time and tell you:

  1. Shameless
  2. Mindhunter
  3. Ozark
  4. Master of None
  5. Manhunt: Unabomber

What are you watching on your trainer/treadmill? Personally, I have two different needs depending on the type of workout -- if it's a straight up ride, I like something that can keep my attention but doesn't have too much dialog (I use closed captioning on the trainer, but still...) and the second need is for intervals where I may be watching numbers more than TV and will be more focused on my workout so may miss scenes.

Kevin signed up for one month of free CBS All Access. We watched the first two episodes of the new Star Trek together and decided that it was  in the "trainer fodder" category. Overall, I'd say that it's a disappointing series. I enjoyed Voyager and Deep Space Nine. So far, this show has no characters that I even like and the mission seems kind of anti Star Trek but whatever.  Anyway, we aren't planning to becoming paying CBS All Access users!

I also watched most of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (not a very good show, just didn't want to make a decision so each time I got on the trainer I was like, "Yeah, that's fine.") and the first half of Icarus (doping documentary on Netflix).  Icarus did not seem like a good 5am show so I went with Star Trek Discovery this morning.

My non-trainer watching has been mostly the Olympics this week but we started Altered Carbon (Netflix) and it's pretty good. For those of you who watched The Killing, the male lead from that show is the lead in Altered Carbon.

Oh, as you can probably tell, Kevin's crazy "Let's drop Netflix" talk has died down.

I've found that I simply cannot concentrate on anything with a plot and dialogue while on the trainer. Might be different if I trained for full IM with longer rides at a lower intensity, or if I didn't do most of my riding between 5 and 6:30 AM! I pretty much always watch videos of scenic rides, while listening to music. Mostly these two channels on Youtube: Bike the World and HD Cycling. The latter has music, usually at cycling cadence, but kind of repetitious. For the latter, you provide your own. Both mainly feature scenic rides in Europe. Occasionally I'll watch something sports-related, like old Ironman shows, Tour de France coverage, or Olympics when they are on.

ive been trying to watch Ozark , but have had a hard time getting into it! i Haven’t even tried it for the trainer as I think you have to pay to close attention, same thing for mind hunter. I think for trainer rides I need something that requires little to no thinking and moves quickly. I’m a fan of Big Bang theory- even if it is getting pretty old now, so they are easy for me  to watch on the trainer. Since I’ve cut the cable cord- we’ll, almost I still have to cancel it!, I’ve been trying to watch more Netflix and Amazon. My problem is I forget which shows Ive started, liked, want to go back to! I think that means none of them have really engaged me.  I’ll need to check out altered carbon.  Just remembered that I have started to watch the alienist on tnt, it’s not bad.

I use an app to keep track of series that I'm watching. It's imperfect though, since it updates when something first airs so for a show like Shetland or Victoria which is first shown on BBC, it gets it wrong. I'm using Series Guide (Android).

Oh! I forgot about The Expanse (Amazon)! We finished the first season but the Olympics have delayed season 2 for us. It's way better than Star Trek Discovery.

Speedo and TYR also have really fun novelty caps for kids (and kids at heart). You might look at your local sports or swim store, or online. At one point I had a shark cap that I really liked.

I usually watch a movie on the treadmill. It has to have a lot of action and limited dialog. Just enough to make me forget that I am on an unnatural contraption made to allow me to experience hell on earth.
I only watch The Sufferfest videos on the bike.
On the none exercise watching, We just finished "The Fall" on Netflix, it was worth watching. We started watching (yes I know I'm almost 20 years behind) "The Sopranos." We did not watch it when it was popular, because we wouldn't pay the premium for HBO.

DH loves that show. I like the American Top Gear better, but of course that's gone.

Has anyone tried these gels? I just got a coupon to try 12 gels for free which naturally I was all about. Just placed my order.

Yes--these are the gels I have used for a couple years.  Easy to take, not super thick and sweet like many.  I don't even wash them down with water.

Dating myself here, but we used to GO TO BLOCKBUSTER VIDEO and rent Sopranos by the season DVD sets. Gosh that brings back memories.

Yes--these are the gels I have used for a couple years.  Easy to take, not super thick and sweet like many.  I don't even wash them down with water.

Cool, thanks. I look forward to trying them. It's hard to keep track of all the gels out there!
