Yes I've started running Tuesdays and Saturdays with groups, but I still have a few days a week on my own. I have a treadmill in my basement I've ran on at least once a week since then. I hate letting this incident change my life and my routine though. He kind of wins when that happens Love, love, love this idea! I was just talking to a friend who went through the volunteer training at the local humane society so she can take a dog out on a hike one a week. I REALLY want to do this and need to stop talking about it and do it! |

Expert 1694 Illinois | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Originally posted by lisac957 Hi everyone, checking in! I did in fact do a race Saturday, but it was more about running with my training group than racing. We did the 5K + 8 more miles to get our long run in. It was great, and we had crisp fall weather to boot. I am still calming myself down from testifying this morning against the man who threatened to rape me (while I was running, alone, about a month ago). I have learned that I'm really good under pressure (even the prosecutor commented how I was calm while one of the other ladies - there were 3 of us - was on the verge of a break down) - but in the aftermath I am kind of a mess. Long story short he was found guilty, but had only been charged with disturbing the peace, so was sentenced to 90 days in prison and he has already served 25. Long version in my blog today. Since I am thinking about this I will ask you all (especially the ladies) - do you carry anything like mace when you're training alone? I am thinking about it, but not sure I would be able to react quickly enough to activate it properly unless I ran with it in the "ready" position at all times. Which let's be honest, I probably wouldn't. Any suggestions for peace of mind, besides obvious safety tips? Well done on testifying against that creep. Even if his sentence seemed light, maybe he'll think twice. I used to carry a little container of pepper spray but like you say, I don't think my reaction time would be very good unless I carried it in my hand, ready to spray. The concern there is always "will I inadvertently spray this thing and mace myself?" I used to run in a public park and would carry my car keys, which could be used as a weapon |

Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Hey all, I have been somewhat spotty in my training and in my Manatee time. Work has been beating the crap outta me lately and I am now the stand in supervisor, due to my boss's vacation absence. In happier news, things have calmed with DD2, she is back home with TW and I. I have had the opportunity to do some photography work for the newish company she is now working for. Hopefully, things at work calm a bit by the end of September and I can get back to running. One good part of all the work is that overtime makes a new bike a more realistic possibility. Probably something with a hardtail for trail riding, yet a shock up front to ease the trips through the palmetto roots. Not for a while, but we'll see. I hope everyone is doing well and more importantly, doing good. |

Well it was finally warm enough to wear it running today and I LOVED IT! I didn't even care that my fat white legs might be blinding passing drivers. I think that there will definitely be another one purchased in the future. |

I actually used to volunteer to walk dogs at our local humane society when they were located next to where I worked. But they moved, and I let my volunteer training status lapse. A few years later when I went back to re-instate, I was told I had to go through the whole training again - it involved multiple classes and training sessions over the course of something like a month. Which I get, for safety purposes, but it sure was a deterrent to me and I didn't go through with it. I wish they made it easier to help. |

I didn't know - Glad that's over with and you had the strength to testify! It must be surreal to face the person in court! I've actually been watching the dog adoption groups looking for a pup that might make a good running partner. I love my greyhound but she won't get off the couch unless it's for the food bowl. I like the idea of volunteering for groups that exercise other people's dogs if you can't have one. In other news......I've been in a triathlon hole these days not wanting to do anything but sleep and eat. HOWEVER a little trail run last Satuday has got me back on track and looking forward to the "women's tri" on Sunday. Coincidentally it's sponsored by http://wearsafe.com/ In Steve news, silicone bracelets have been ordered. I'll work out the details to get some to all of you soon. Happy humpday. RR OUT |

Master 2429 Falls Church, Virginia | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois So on Sunday I did my first Oly distance! Race Report is up, and my takeaway is that I really had no idea that so many bad things happening could turn out to be the best day ever. And the Giraffe says the funds are there for a new bike for my birthday/Christmas, so maybe it was good that my bike broke on race day. I had my doctor's appointment, and we're going to try some new meds, so hopefully I can get some relief from the depression. I'm cautiously optimistic. All in all, life outside of work is going okay. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois And....in the category of spending $$ on one's sport, I just signed up for a kind of "training camp" in Thailand during our Tet break. This probably isn't practical for most of you, but it's actually a pretty good deal and sounded like fun. It's at a resort outside Phuket called Thanyapura and they have packages that include lodging and (I think) breakfast at their "sports hotel", which has several Olympic sized pools, big gym, running tracks and trails, recovery facilities, etc. (Plus, of course, a beach). Accommodation is at fairly modest cost as beach resorts go. Then they have resident tri coaches (one of them is Macca, but I expect he's not always there) and they offer both custom coaching (which I'm not doing) and 1-2 daily group sessions, with variations for the workout for people at different levels/distances which you can join (or not) as you wish. I found out about it a few years ago as they were a race sponsor and got a brochure and coupon in my swag bag. Have been wanting to do it for a couple of years but it always books up early and by the time I thought about trying, the rooms or flights were full for the dates I wanted. Tet (end of January/beginning of February) is crazy here--already a lot of the cheaper rooms and flights were full! I actually love to train (the tough part is working it into the rest of my life!) and have done holidays where it's basically a "training camp"--I'm working in other stuff (shopping, food, beach, exploring) around runs, swims, and naps (and, on some trip, rides). But since moving here, I have usually ended up doing them in Singapore, which is difficult for biking. This place has good places to ride (on/near the Laguna Phuket race course) and they will pick up your bike with you for no extra charge. So Rover can go too. It is quite a bit cheaper than similar things I've seen in the US, and I like the idea that one can opt into/out of the sessions as desired. So if I did want to take a recovery day and just lie on the beach, or go exploring, I could do that without having to explain myself to anyone. Can send the link if anyone is interested, or just google it. Has anyone done a "camp" like this, and how was it? Edited by Hot Runner 2016-09-14 5:39 PM |

When my job really sucks - which in the past has been every day I try hard to remind myself that it's the $$$ that allow me to do the things I love, like have a bucket load of dogs, have money for race entry, oh and eat . So is there anyway that you can kind of set something up so that rather than thinking about how much you hate work you can instead think about it like "today I put up with this schit so that I can do ... or get ..." |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Originally posted by Hot Runner And....in the category of spending $$ on one's sport, I just signed up for a kind of "training camp" in Thailand during our Tet break. Sounds fun! Jo Baxes went to help out at this one, IIRC. ETA: Jo is a Manatee For Life -- I'd say ex Manatee but the whole once a Manatee thing... Edited by jmkizer 2016-09-15 7:33 AM |
