Yea, I have to admit it was fun. I will also post a funny video of my youngest brother cheering at the finish line. I was so happy my family came (both my brothers had a horrible hangover from the night before). In the other news.... I e-mailed the coach from Northwestern's Masters Swim hoping I can start training with them in June I did not realize Northwestern's employee get 20% discount, so it would be $180 for summer semester. I will be getting refund from school/financial aid, so I don't have to touch my savings I also remembered that couple of months ago I talked to a girl in the locker room who used to be in swim competition, nationals, etc... (had to quit because of an injury) and she offered to swim with me. At that time I was like ...whatever... but now I thought why not: what I need is somebody who would keep me in the pool for an hour. So that would be a great addition to Masters Excellent! It is! Looking a little closer again, the cost is a more than I was paying, but the swim time available is twice as much. 6 sessions of 90' each are available. Such a convenient place too. That sounds great! You would not believe what happened! I was driving out of the parking lot and I saw Master Swim coach walking towards the elevator (the pool/gym building is attached to parking garage). I quickly run to her and told about my e-mail sent few moments earlier. I explained my situation (less than 1k swam, less than an hour available, and all my crazy stuff) and she was so supportive!! And encouraging. She said she prepares individual workouts for slower/less experienced swimmers, and she addresses the goals/issues one wants to work on (speed, endurance, specific stroke, etc). She said it would be fine to stay less than an hour - some people come late, some stay for half time - that's up to me. She encouraged me to come earlier and see how it looks like. I was so excited I started to jump in front of her haha I actually cannot wait I do not know the prices of other places, but this one has sessions every day except Sunday. And again - if I come during my lunch break, I don't have to spend money on babysitter for my kids. So it's a win-win Thank you all for your support and encouragement As always! Lots of pieces of the puzzle coming together for you right now. I'm so happy for you!! And excited!!! |

Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Part deux Quick update. Two minor bits of news. Did my first progressive hill run since getting back at it. Felt great (or terrible in a great way, more accurately). Only very minor ache a couple hours after in my Achilles - felt fine during - and I'm doing my PT now with it feeling increasingly better. Encouraging! Second, I got back in the pool and swam a bit over a mile. Ribs actually felt fine! (better than the rest of me) Still have the chronic hammy and elbow deal, but I'm happily ignoring them again. I miiiiiiiight even sign up for a tri in a couple weeks. It was the last one I raced last year (swim was canceled) before shutting it down. I'm not in shape to race it, but with today's swim test out of the way, I'm sure I can at least finish without problems from the ribs (it's an Oly). Of course, 10k yards of swimming this YEAR is not the base I would like, but I miss racing! Matt |

Well, perhaps because I'm more careful with some expressions, you can put a price on that as this might have been quite different if the cost was several times as high. So many things we spend on that it's easy to get overtaken with just a little more in a number of ways. I was looking the other way around in that it's still low enough of a cost for all the conveniences and awesomeness this offers that savings that *might* be found down in other city locations (I'm outer suburbs) are probably not worth it. Really excited to see something that looks so promising. |

Really excited to see something that looks so promising. Of course. What I meant was it seems like it's in the right ballpark in terms of price, especially when you consider not having to pay a sitter and the fact that it is likely to get used because it is so convenient. Besides, Mary will have to park somewhere else to avoid the coach if she ditches! Nothing is more expensive that the membership that you pay for but never use! Thanks so much, Ben, for sharing your knowledge of the Chicago-area masters groups! |

10km run in the pouring rain the entire time. My plan was to take it easy on the first 5 or 6 k then turn it up and try to sneak under the 1hr mark. It wasnt a bad run but I never really found the groove and it wasnt until a marshal called out "almost there... only 1k to go" that I really clued in that I should have been pushing a little harder. Finished in 1:01:54 which really isnt bad for a a trail run for me but also close enough to that 1hr goal that I was disappointed... Still better than sitting on the couch though so there is that. Next 10km is in 4 week and its basically a rail trail run so 1hr should be well within reach. PLUS I finally got a GPS running watch for my birthday today so I will no longer have to be running blind! Edited by DaveL 2016-05-17 9:33 PM |

The other day I got a text from K saying "I only had to do 3k this morning it hardly felt worth getting up for." Adjustment time. One of the first things I figured out with the watch is just how uneven my pacing was. I hope your findings differ! |
