NAME: Kingsley

STORY: I was a competitive swimmer for 19 years until October 2000. Then I got fat then skinny... for a few years before taking up open water swimming. That led to meeting Yanti and her infecting me with the triathlon virus.

FAMILY STATUS: Married to Yanti

CURRENT TRAINING: Barely training at all. I need to get my motivation and self discipline sorted out.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: An Olympic late January at Busselton Australia, the 20km Rottnest channel swim in February, an Olympic at Sungailiat Indonesia in late April, 70.3 Vietnam and maybe IM Malaysia in November.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I have a good idea about how to train for swimming but know nothing about cycling or running so the chance to learn something is good.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I have a reasonably extensive sporting background and I'm happy to share my experience with others about training if only as an example of how *not* to train.

Welcome to the Pod!  20k swim, barely training at all.  Sounds about right

Yeah ... he married me, after all. Triathlon isn't the only bad habit he picked up from me ... my bad habits ABOUT triathlon rubbed off too! Yikes!

He wasn't kidding about the how "not" to.

I line up at the start of the channel swim every year wondering if I've done enough training when my total is 400km+.  I'm crapping myself right now.

Shouldn't that be like $9.33 from the math I'm seeing online?

Hi all!

I've got some more news on my own personal IM adventure :-) Last season I was borrowing a friend's Bianchi road bike for training and any events. I'm ridiculously excited to say that I've just ordered myself a bike I've wanted for ages - a QR CD0.1 - and it should be here in a week Also, I have my first proper trisuit coming so I don't have to worry about changing entire outfits all the time.

On a more difficult note - I'm not going to start my full 6 month training program until April this year, to build up to the IM in October, but rather focusing on building my base level of fitness across the board. I'm training almost every day and I have never been more tired... Could this be down to fueling? I have been using scratch in every swim, eating protein after every run (and am not running huge distances right now, somewhere between 5-8 miles at any one time) and haven't been riding because I have no bike until the new one gets delivered.

Generally I'm eating pretty healthily and trying to also eat a balanced meal (30/30/40) in the evening and smaller meals/snack every 2-3 hours throughout the day. Finally, I'm also resting one day a week too, getting 6.5-7hrs sleep a night and sleeping in on Sundays (my rest day). I hate this constantly tired feeling so any advice on what I can do to change that would be much appreciated.

Thanks all and happy Thursday!
David

Kinsgley - welcome! How have you not been an official Manatee yet?

For my update...sounds like I'm the big winner out of the group. $7! Read em and weep guys...I'm headed to 7-Eleven for a chocolate milk and the jumbo bag of pizzeria Combos.

And now for my training question: so I've been plugging away since spring building up from nothing, and doing quite well with it. Starting soon here I'll be switching to a real training plan! Nothing fancy, just the BT 3x Sprint 16 week one. I like that the run and cycle volume build up so gently, which is what I need. But my swimming is a bit beyond that particular plan. Can I get some suggestions of how I should ramp up my swimming from where it is now to an eventual 1500m swim at the end of the season? My logs are up to date if that helps anyone with tips. My concern is that while I can swim a pretty decent sized workout now, I don't really get how that translates to swimming the full distance nonstop, and need some confidence and planning help.

Thanks!!

Do you do flip turns? (serious question)

So do you want to ramp up to be able to 1500 straight or are you more looking to get faster?

Your logs say you swim 2-3 hours per week, which should be more than enough to get through a 1500m swim. Just because you don't do long "intervals" doesn't mean you couldn't swim 1500m straight right now. If you're worried about it, just swim 1500 straight one day to boost your convenience.

The one caveat to that is if you don't do flip turns. In open water there's no wall where you get to get a big breath / slight rest when making a turn. That can be a game changer for some folks.

If you're looking to get faster, then up your volume to 3000 per session and incorporate more REALLY FAST 25s & 50s sets to build speed strength.

Yes, I just learned flip turns when I took lessons in the fall. That combined with 15 years of playing oboe, and hypoxia and I are good friends!
I think you hit it on the head with confidence, as that is what I'm nervous about. Obviously I'd like to know I can swim longer distances, and would love to get faster, but knowing that the distance isn't going to wreck me would be nice!
One of my goals for the year is to slowly build up to 3000 yard workouts, so nice to know that was on the right track.
Guess I just need to do a long set one of these days to get the monkey off my back!

GO RACERS!!!!

HEAL UP CRIPPLED FOLKS!!!!

Big cycling weekend for me in the Texas hill country. 50 miles Friday, 80 miles Saturday, 50 miles Sunday. And there are real hills there. I have to be honest, I'm a bit scared.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!!

Congrats on the new bike! I just bought my 1st tri bike to. I went for a Retul fit and there was an Orbea that was basically a perfect fit. I've only ridden it on my trainer but so far it feels a lot different than my old road bike. I'm having a hard time staying in aero but hopefully with more practice it'll start to get more comfortable. Did you get Di2? What trisuit did you go with?

Regarding your fatigue, I have no idea. Just throwing a guess out there but maybe you're overdoing it and your body's not used to all the training. I'm sure it'll get better!

If you think you are taking in enough calories to cover your training, and you aren't losing weight, I would say the next place to look is whether you are getting enough sleep. If I tried to do my current training schedule on 6.5-7 my body would rebel.

Do you have workouts logged anywhere? It's hard to say without seeing what you're doing.

I hate this constantly tired feeling so any advice on what I can do to change that would be much appreciated. Thanks all and happy Thursday! David

This is where using the BT training log feature would be helpful.  Seriously, without knowing anything about the type or duration or spacing of workouts, we're just shooting blanks.

I won $4.00 on the Power Ball that I don't have to share with anyone, so I'm feeling pretty rich right now.

Well I just traded my 20 mile Ragnar spot for a 24 mile . It fits my plan better.

Funny story... so Aspen, our GSH/Lab mix is my #1 running partner. She lives for our runs. If it even looks like I might go for a run she won't leave my side.  So yesterday when I got home from work DH had taken Aspen with him for a drive.  I couldn't wait for them to get back because daylight was burning so I headed out.

DH said when they got home she searched the house, checked the clothes I'd left on the floor when I changed and proceeded to glare at DH for making her miss the run. Ha! She's too smart!

David - congrats on the new bike, yay!!!  Very exciting!

Sean - your bike adventure sounds taxing yet fun, please enjoy it to the fullest but also be safe.

Laura - keep working on that swim, you'll be just fine for the 1500 by the time of your race.  Personally, I do need to do the distance to have that confidence boost to know I can (with swimming, anyhow, not biking or running), but if you have 2-3 quality workouts of (I think you said) 2000-3000 yds per week, you'll be there.

TJ - dogs are often waaaay smarter than we give them credit for, and are much better reasoners and deducers than we realize.  Poor Aspen!  And poor you!  Hopefully you aren't in the doghouse for too long!  Sorry, I couldn't resist.

That's great1 Of course, the only reasonable thing to do was for your husband to take Aspen for a run

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
