Originally posted by 4agoodlife Quick pop in on a Sbux walk. Didn't feel like running or biking, but thought a 7mi walk with coffee stop was just the thing this morning. DH is in DC all week so didn't sleep well last night...but "Bridesmaids" entertained me til 1am.

That happened to me Thursday night when Tony flew out to Vegas - couldn't sleep at all.  Friday night was a bit better & by Saturday I had taken over the entire bed & slept like a LOG.  Then... last night because I knew he was going to be home late I couldn't get to sleep again and watched the Emmys followed by Bridesmaids.  I totally blame him.

Great job all you racers, I haven't checked out any RR, but Felicia, that is a pretty cool trophy.

I think I can be taken off the DL for my foot, but kept on for my shoulder.  Grrrrrr!

Awww - what a sweetie!

Boo to your shoulder keeping you on the DL.

Back when I lived in Nebraska I was in the middle of trial prep with one of my fave AUSA's. I remember he'd be drinking DD all day and in to the evening until we left. If there was coffee left in his cup when we came in the next morning he'd microwave it and finish it off!

Ok, I'm not that bad, but I will admit to reheating my x-large coffee as often as it takes to keep it as hot as I like it.

My partner does that too, but she forgets it in the microwave about half the time. Mine never lasts long enough to need re-heating.

Mine usually don't last long enough either.  Tony, OTOH will not only get some ice cubes put into his coffee, but then will do the whole blow-into-the-little-opening-of-the-lid thing to try and cool it down even further.  Yeah.... I don't think that's ever actually worked, but he keeps trying.

And I finally had time to finish it.

RAreportCE

I didn't do much today. The Sbux walk was about 7mi,  and I'm laughing because my legs are a little sore. My race effort and lack of sleep caught up to me at Mak's nap time. I fell asleep on the floor with my head on her mattress. Luckily one of the dogs made some noise that woke me up; Taylor might have been hanging out at school while they called the irresponsible mom...whose phone was downstairs. Surprised

Now I have four more nights as a single mom while DH is at his engineer brouhaha in Washington, DC.

Time to check on the Pod's day

Just a little update to all of you who have been so kind with your inspires.

I haven't dropped off the earth, I'm just not logging anything because I'm officially on the DL list.  I don't know what's wrong, but my right ankle is a mess.  I've got swelling into my foot and up through my calf, and just a ton of pressure.  It sort of feels like if I could just crack it (you know, like a knuckle), it would be fine, but I can't seem to make that happen.  Totally weird because it started when I had my mileage dialed waaaay back and I didn't do anything to it acutely.  Totally confusing.

I can't get into ortho until Wednesday, but I'm going to completely chill until then.  Quite honestly, walking is difficult and it's waking me up at night.  WTF?

Well, I know I'm late to the "Oh Shyte" party...but that is just poopy. Hope you get some answers on Wednesday. Anything different going on with it today?

Well we have these little Asian massage places all over the shopping malls in Melbourne - they are no good for injury but for a generaly work out your kinks massage perfect.  I went to my local mall where the grocery store is - 30mins back and shoulders, relaxing oil massage - OUCH.  Loved it.  Will go again this week.

Fibreglass cast tomorrow, right now wrist is pretty much unsupported and feeling every jarring moment!

Highlight of my weekend?  My kids giving me a package that had come on Wednesday (I guess).  They had been wanting to surprise me with it (they're kinda weird about mail, and think that every package that comes in the mail is like a present, and for them it usually is).  Anyway, they forgot to give it to me, and when I opened it I saw this.  Thanks TJ--very, very kind.  I am a total sock freak and snob, and you couldn't have nailed it any better.  Too cool.  Feelin the love

Glad you like the socks! I luf Sock Guy. Now heal up so you can get out there and use them!!!!!!!!!

P.S. That is our state symbol. It's on our flag (and most everything else). It was first created by the Zia Tribe. Here is a description of what it stands for...

The design represents a circular sun with linear rays extending in four directions. To the Zia people and other cultures, four is a significant number. It is embodied in the four directions of the earth, the four seasons of the year, the four times of the day: sunrise, noon, evening and night, and in life’s four divisions of childhood, youth, adulthood and old age. Everything is bound together in a circle of life, without beginning, without end. The Zia also believe that in this Great Brotherhood of all things, humans have four sacred obligations: they must develop a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit and a devotion to the welfare of their people.

Cool. As we were driving through Albuquerque, I kept thinking "I am in TJ country!"

Originally posted by StaceyK I think that it's time to up the anti on my mid-week trainer rides so they are more than just steady rides. I have been looking at some trainer sessions in a couple of books that I have. A lot of them have single leg drills in them. Are these worth doing or not? Is there a purpose to them?

What do the books say about their purpose?

I did months of knee rehab with them. Hate them. Don't see why I should pedal with one leg when I have two relatively good ones.  But that's just me

I believe the purpose is to develop your ability to pull 360* with each leg, rather than just to push, or to push and pull straight up.  The idea is to develop an efficiency in your pedaling so that you maximize the power from each stroke.

Yes, efficiency has been cited as the rationale, but this logic does not look at things well enough. What I mean is that it does not look at the efficiency of creating that power. In the cycling position, the leg extension is stronger than the contraction for pulling up. And it's not even close. I forget exactly how much, but think that some of the smallest people in here could put out more power in their extension than I can on the pull up (a 180 lb guy whose strength is the bike).

Then back to the idea of using the circle, that's not really far off. But you don't use each leg for the entire circle and double it up (since you have 2) to be most efficient. That's a waste due to the variation in creating power at different points of that circle. Instead, since you have two legs concentrate on the most powerful phase of each and then fill in the gap between them. That way you're using the most effective part of your stroke for each leg and get a more consistent output going through the cranks in a more efficient manner. You figure out that gap by riding lots. It comes faster by riding hard and riding hills. Hills slow you down faster which makes the gaps more obvious.

Some think to still try and lift the leg in the back to pick up it's own weight, but even that isn't necessary. Top level cyclists will have a negative pedal force in this region, meaning the leg isn't picking itself up. The other one is pushing it. There is no real minimum necessary as the more effective component should be doing as much of the work as you can give it. Having said that, while there isn't really a minimum power to create, it's still beneficial to do just enough make the motion feel circular. So in that, I never have a release point where it feels like I just pushed off a stair step, but rather fade into nothing in the back of the stroke. This helps keep the motion flowing smoothly. I don't think this part of the motion really deserves much concentration. It'll happen over time. Concentrate on the push and everything else tends to work itself out over time.

Follow-up today: have to stay in the boot until I'm pain free 100% of the time.  I can work on transitioning myself out of the boot before my next appointment as pain allows.  I can swim (pull-buoy only) until I am pain free.  After that, I can aqua jog and bike in the boot.
