I ran with a stomach full of pizza tonight and was not impressed by the bloated belly overhanging the waist of my pants! Nutrition and weight loss might be on top of my New Years Resolution goals for next week. Yell

I think the saddle is one of the most important parts of the bike. It's the part that you are in contact with the most and the longer you ride the more important comfort is. The saddle that came with my bike started falling apart so I ordered a terry butterfly. It is fine for sub 2 hour ride but beyond that it can be troublesome. I recently got an adamo saddle after hearing many good reports on BT about it. I like it so far but it needs careful adjustment and I am just riding the trainer now usually less than 1.5 hours at a time.

OK...I couldn't stand it any longer...I was very pleased with my run yesterday but the fact that I ran at 1 second over a 10 min. pace was killing me.  So I went out today and did 5 miles in 48:30.  This is the first time I have done that since returning to running/training 3 years ago after a 15 year break.

Felt real good on the entire run and the weather could not have been better.  I am sure the ice bath I took yesterday helped with the recovery since this is the 4th day I have run in a row.

Tomorrow is an off day...core work only, 2.5 with my oldest son on Fri., 4 on Saturday and 8 on Sunday.

Thanks so much for the Inspires...they are really HUGE for me right now in terms of supporting this training.

Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year to all of the MG.

Went skiing today with my wife...we had off and the kids had school so we couldn't pass it up!  It was just a short trip but with no lift lines we got up and down many times.

No races for me coming up.  What I am looking forward to the most is spending time with family.  We will leave Christmas day for my in-laws house in PA, spend a few days there and then go see my family in Long Island, return to the area on New Year's day for a few days of skiing before going back to work on the 4th.

Mostly running for me over the next week or so.  I am going to bring my suit and goggles in case I can find a YMCA to sneak into for a swim.

Tracy - good luck on your run!!

Steve - great work on your running.  Congrats on that 5 mile time!

John - I will be working on my core with 12 ounce curls over the next week or so too!!

thats all good and well but.. HORSERADISH.  AWESOME!   throw some (a lot) in mashed potatoes.  even better the next day or three.  or better yet, soak a plank.  throw a slab of steelhead on it.  horseradish on top.  on the grill.  20 minutes later.  oh man!

kkcbelle - 2009-12-23 2:15 PM QUESTION:

My butt is not adjusting to my trainer. I am really in serious pain every time I get on... I expected this after taking a break from biking to train for/run a marathon, but I didn't expect the pain to continue so long! In my past experience I really only remember it hurting for a session or 2 and that is was mostly just annoying. This time around it hurts and I actually fear it when I get on the bike and am at times just cringing and shifting around trying to endure it. Pretty frustrating. The butt bones are sore when I'm not on the bike too -- sitting is fine but if I apply pressure to them they are tender and feel bruised.

Do I just suck it up and keep on keepin' on? I don't think it's a saddle issue at this point, I just think it's a punishiment for being off the bike. Anyone got any tips to help get through this? I've only been riding in tri shorts, so I think next time I might try some more padded shorts, but I tend to prefer just the tri shorts padding. That's about the only variable I can think to try at this point, though.

One other point of note is that I have a road bike and no aero bars at this point, but that shouldn't matter. I did some 4-hour trainer rides last spring, so I know I can endure! (I do plan to get aero bars and get re-fitted for them after the holidays.)

HELP!!

If it is more in your glut muscle try stretching it out more. A good stretch is to sit up in a chair (not John's 12 ounce curl position) Back straight. Put one leg over the knee of the other. Bend forward at the hips but don't let your back curl. Keep it as straight as possible. This has helped me quite a bit with the glut problem I had/have.

I wish it were just muscle... that I can endure! It's the butt bones (sitz bones?) that are the problem. I keep thinking it'll feel better one day but today told me it's just not getting there. I will keep gutting it out for now... But might consider the saddle. John, I'm totally up for trying the Terry Butterfly if you can score it!

I emailed my PT today who did my bike fit to get in for a re-fit -- it's been a couple of years (2.5 at least -- perhaps my fit has changed?) and as I said, I do want to add aero bars to the equation. When I can get in to see him I will, obviously, address this.

Sadly, I truly feel it's just case of too long out of the saddle. Ugh! I have sworn up and down I will never neglect my bike for 2+ months again. EVER.

dalessit - 2009-12-23 3:19 AM Oh, as far as cadence goes, I have 15 minute runs every so often on my schedule to just work on that, right now I am checking for at least 21 left or right foot strikes in 15 seconds.  Which is pretty much spot on what I am running now.  So I guess that would make 84 per minute.

Also, not sure if you guys saw this RR.  How cool would that be.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=191067&posts=4#M2574877

That would be soooooooo cool but like he said, how do you make 300m last forever?!

What's the one thing I'm looking forward to this Christmas?  Hands down...seeing my 22 month old daughter on Christmas morning!  She is already trying to unwrap the handful of presents under the tree so I can't wait to see what she does when she sees all of her presents and finds out she can actually open them!

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas!!!!!

I can almost bet she will be more excited about the wrapping paper than the actual present.  I was all excited to see our niece open her presents (she was adorable), she spent all the time ripping paper, throwing it and laughing.  Totally cute, but the box could have been empty and she wouldn't have noticed.  Hopefully you can post a pic or two.  With no kids, I love seeing others have a blast after Santa arrives!

I need to rant and this time about training. We took the kids to Great Wolf Lodge in Concord NC, where we are right now. This AM I have an LAT planned. I need 1 continuous hour of running to collect the HR data. I do 20 minutes warm up, 30 minutes as hard as I can go and 10 minutes cool down. The key data is the last 20 minutes while going hard. Well, 28 minutes in all 3 TMs die. I call the desk and someone comes and resets everything. He says the electricians wired them wrong so that all are on one circuit. I start again going hard hoping to collect relevant data. While I am on 2 more people get onthe other TM's. 12 minutes later they all die again. Yeah I got some running in but it was not what I needed. I may try late tonight. Otherwise I ahve to do it tomorrow when we get home, but that was supposed to be a rest day.

My question is, since this place is packed and charges alot of $, why can't they fix the TM wiring/ Or at least put up a sign? I am pi$$ed!

(rant off)

DR...Bummer about the TM's.

If I were you I would wait until you get home to try your test.  First, if this happens again you will probably kill someone...and that creates a ton of paperwork  ,  Second, you stressed your body a ton today and for accurate test results I would think you would want at least semi-fresh legs.

Just my .02.

Great job on the effort to get it done while enjoying time with the family.

Have a great run, Gary!  I think you are allowed to stuff your face, you just did a 50K about 2 weeks ago!  Well, just you posting the "100 pushup challenge" query makes me feel a little bad, since last year some of us were doing it and I totally flaked out after about the 2nd week.  I think some of the MG did follow through...c'mon you guys that did it, tell Gary how easy it was!

Doug, sorry about the treadmill malfunction.  That sucks, whenever I had a test to do, I would do it on the college track.  Twice, when I had 1 mile repeats (almost all out), this guy just starts walking in the lane I am running in, which is "whatever", I move to lane 2, then he moves to lane 2!  What's up with that?  I mean, can't they tell we're trying to collect data!  Geesh!

This morning, during my swim, a nice little lady starts aqua jogging right in my lane....Merry Christmas!  Luckily, I was on my last cooldown lap.  I smiled at her and off I went.

Okay, done ranting... and wishing all of you a wonderful holiday filled with lots of
family, fun, food and merriment!

Merry Christmas Eve everyone!

It's funny how cool christmas with kids is,  I can't wait for tomorrow to see their faces light up when they open stuff up.

Anyone expecting any cool tri-related stuff?

Sam is downstairs doing her FTP test on the CT.  Getting ready myself to go out for an hour run, should be fun trying to find a 30 minute out and back with clear roads/trails.  Snow just isn't melting fast enough here.

Then heading down to Sam's parents house for prime rib dinner with the family.

Good morning All....had 10 pages to read today!! Wow.
I know a couple people who are actually doing the torch relay. One guy was soooo pumped to be doing. Later he found out he is running Tuesday at 7am in a residential part of the city...He said the only people there watching will be his wife and kids. But would still be a neat experience. My company is a big sponsor of the games, so we could have written a 250 word essay into why we would like to do it,etc. and then there was a draw. No dice for me.
Going for a chilly run right now, and then let the festivities begin!!!

Merry christmas to all, and all ... RUN HARD!!

The torch just came through my town yesterday. We were going to go see it but my son has been sick and was napping, so we skipped it. The baby is too young to understand and I didn't want to go without the kids.

My mom, aunt, and grandfather all ran with the torch in '88. Back then, all the runners got a full kilometer, but after the three of them were selected, the organizers allowed them to run 3K together. We have pics of me holding the torch, flame and all! This year, my cousin (the daughter of my aunt who ran in '88) got to run with the torch. CBC did some interviews with her and my aunt and grandfather, who showed up to watch her in their '88 tracksuits.

Merry Christmas Eve, all!

Hi all!
I've been reading the forum whenever I get a chance, but haven't had time for posting. I've been busy enjoying the family and being at home for a change. My training is non existent right now though. I've only been getting my core training in because it's part of my challenge this month. Thankfully, weight loss is also part of the challenge or I would have gained 10 lbs by now, instead I'm just feeding everyone else.

Gary and I did the 100 push up challenge last year, but after reaching the goal just stopped doing them. Apparently we need another goal after reaching 100, because we can't get anything done without one.

Tracy- Glad to hear you get to go for a run! I hope it goes well for you

Suzy- Sorry about your friend. My thoughts are with you. Hope that foot heals soon too

Kyla- Hope you figure out the saddle issues. Sounds like a literal pain in the azz. And, don't worry about ruining the book... at least you didn't tell them about the Bigfoot who comes out of the canyon and eats three of the runners

Reno8- Great job on the running!

Everyone- Merry Christmas! I hope you have a wonderful holiday!!!
