Nate Thomas is quite strong and has gone closer to 85% before I believe, and while the run was still decent it wasn't where he wanted. Since going with a coach, he had backed off a bit on the bike to help with that. For those of you who don't know Ben, he is a very strong cyclist. He does crazy trainer workouts, like 305w NP for 2hr+...ya....that is not a typo That 2:15 you mentioned earlier would be a real possibility in the ideal course & conditions. Contrast that with 3:15-3:30 expectations (near 50% longer) and no way would I ride up that high. Especially not with a run likely taking 2+ hrs at best. |

We are quite the active group :-) We have as many posts as most of the more "active" groups, but we have way more views. I suspect we have a fair amount of lurkers. You pretty much summed up my situation. I made a commitment to work on the run this winter but when this group popped up I thought I could work on my bike at the same time. Unfortunately I am struggling with both. On the other hand, I am learning a lot. |

Master 3022 | Subject: RE: Power Mentor Group with Shane & Marc - Closed. Week 4 - Threshold 2 is done. I really thought the 8 minute intervals would start to beat me by the end, but i ended up increasing avg power on each interval. Definitely requiring concentration to hit the avgs where I want. FTP I've been running with is 217 putting my targets at 203 for today's 8' intervals. (1-30-14 Ride.png) Attachments ---------------- 1-30-14 Ride.png (162KB - 5 downloads) |

Extreme Veteran 5722 | Subject: RE: Power Mentor Group with Shane & Marc - Closed. Originally posted by ligersandtions Week 4, VO2 - 1 done this morning. I did all of the 30" intervals at 120%, so I was pretty pleased with that. I could have cranked out more if the workout had called for it, but I was so so glad when they were done! I also ran last night for the first time in four weeks (well, first time successfully....I'd tried two other times with instant pain, so turned back within one minute). I kept it super easy, incredibly slow....but most importantly, it was pain-free! So here's to hoping I can keep myself healthy for the next few months and that running doesn't get in the way of my bike progress. Nicole, can you post your TCX file ? Veteran 441 Maine | Subject: RE: Power Mentor Group with Shane & Marc - Closed. OK, got WK4 SWE-1 done after work tonight with a short 20 min run afterwards. That ride felt good. Definitely needed to stay focused on the 20 min intervals but I wasn't wiped out after the ride. TSS #s THR-1: 80 VO2-1: 67 SWE-1: 116 One odd spike in the power data at just before the first 20 min interval on SWE-1. Not sure what caused it but the wifi was acting a bit strange tonight and I also had a dropout of all the Ant+ signals for about 2 seconds in the last 5 minutes so I think it was PC related. Still here... came down with a bad cold last weekend that will not go away. I swear our 2 kids are little incubators. 5 pages of posts to catch up on! Good to see that everyone is keeping up with the workouts! I did manage to get in the two VO2 workouts for week 4 and plan to do Threshold1 Saturday night: WK4 VO2-1 - 67 TSS WK4 VO2-2 - 65 TSS In hindsight, feeling as lousy as I did, the 2nd VO2 workout may have been a bit too much ... I was pretty spent afterwards. Luckily this was a rest week in my HM plan, so the running volume was quite low. TSS for the week should only be about 210 so I was hoping to fit in a 4th trainer workout to add another 60 or 70 to the total. But, I may skip it and rest up for next week.

1053 | Subject: RE: Power Mentor Group with Shane & Marc - Closed. Busy week, but keeping up, haven't had a chance to post, but here is Week 4 threshold 2. Was dead on for the first three 8 minute intervals, and pushed it in the last. 93% FTP at 266 watts goal, got 269,267,268, the last one I was at 282, just over FTP. I don't find these workouts easy, and see some mention of 2 x 20 min at 100% FTP as a sort of standard FTP boosting workout. That seems brutal. TSS for this ride was 86. File attached. I think several of the people that do 2x20 actually do it around 95%. I rarely do it. I don't think my coach last year prescribed it once. When I have done it, I usually climb up a big hill, it makes it more 'tolerable'. Some would argue you will get as much benefit doing 4x10 as 2x20. Lots of chatter on this subject elsewhere |

Extreme Veteran 5722 | Subject: RE: Power Mentor Group with Shane & Marc - Closed. Originally posted by Scott71 In hindsight, feeling as lousy as I did, the 2nd VO2 workout may have been a bit too much ... I was pretty spent afterwards. I did VO2-2 as well and walked away ...not walking very fast. Remember that whole conversation about batteries and W' ? Remember the article I referred to you about Dr Skiba's work ? Well it is really really cool stuff. He has modelled what happens to you when you ride over CP, which you did in VO2-2. Then your battery recharges during the rest portion, but it doesn't quite come back to full charge in that short interval. So you start the next one partially empty....go on like this 4x and you break down. He built this modelling tool into Raceday and I have been playing with it. I was so fascinated by it I added a third VO2 interval this week to see if it made sense. It did ! If I load your VO2-2 file, with your CP and W', you emptied your battery. By the model, as a matter of fact you where running on negative, which means your CP and/or W' is probably set low. We will come back to this, I don't think we should get distracted quite yet, but there is some really cool stuff he is working on. This stuff will make it's way into mainstream GC. Which is very cool for everyone in this group. I am really looking forward to you guys testing I am not looking forward to me testing :-) Edited by marcag 2014-02-01 6:57 AM |

92 | Subject: RE: Power Mentor Group with Shane & Marc - Closed. Threw down week 4 threshold 2 yesterday evening. I really was not feeling it from the beginning and I think that was due to a little tired, it was warm in North Texas so the house had more heat and humidity (probably needed more cooling). Anyway, no excuses and still hit the goals with another pretty smooth power graph. Looks like I will do threshold tomorrow. Enjoy your weekend!!! Would anyone comment on whether I should mix outside rides and indoor trainer rides when using Power and analyzing these on GC? They seem worlds apart in variability but I guess Power is Power-whether it's inside or outside...I"m just concerned that it will raise my FTP, and force more painful trainer rides...No, what I mean is that I'm just not really sure which is my 'true' FTP-one that incorporates outside, with hills and wind etc or the one inside with less variables. I was just shocked to see how much the power values dance around. Wow. I could generate a second me (much to my wife's chagrin) on GC, one for inside and one for outside, for consistency of training and to generate FTP unique to inside or outside, but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes to use ALL of the data. Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Power Mentor Group with Shane & Marc - Closed. Non cycling related but I had a killer swim session this morning. Due to de-icing my car taking so long I missed the 7:00 AM masters swim so swam on my own. For the first time I was able to hold a 1:30 interval for a set of 10x100's. AND the shortest rest inverval was 6 seconds so I didn't even need any touch and go's. Rest day yesterday so what a difference that can make as well. Will do WK4 TH workout tonight, I'm pretty fired up so I'll be kicking at high wattage tonight! |

The everyday riding around at 70%, whether it's on 200 or 220w will make little difference. Sure, if test indoors and do one of your threshold interval session soutdoors, you will hit better targets and get 10 extra TSS points, but over a 6 week training period, it's nothing. Test in the environment you will be doing the heavy lifting |

I've never tested outside simply because I would not trust myself to try and push that hard outside + too many ups and downs that would skew how I'm doing. That said there is a local 20km TT with a local bike club and I may join this year so I can ride in some of these. But I reckon if I use my indoor testing number + outdoor training rides, I have a pretty good handle on CP. |

Champion 9407 Montague Gold Mines, Nova Scotia | Subject: Week 5 Wow - week 5 already! We'll do this week and then one more before we test again and then another five week block before the final test. Hope all is well with everyone! http://home.trainingpeaks.com/blog/article/power-training-levels Last week we looked at the information found at the above link and focused our interest on training in Level 4 which is designed to target threshold. However, while for endurance events we certainly focus our efforts on level 4, that does not mean we do not train at other intensities and there are benefits to training at a variety of intensities throughout the year. An additional intensity that will comprise some of our harder efforts through the group will be level 5 and there are benefits and challenges to training at this level. With level 5, you will see that it is similar in many ways to level 4 although the actual effectiveness of causing the desired training adaptations is somewhat different. Beyond the differences here, the other primary difference with training in level 5 is the amount of training at this level that can be accumulated within a given session. For amateur athletes, I typically find that 25 minutes is about the maximum amount of time that an athlete can accumulate in one training session and it is quite common to see that they will start to falter after about 20 minutes of time at this level. So while one “earns” more TSS with efforts over FTP, when the recovery intervals are included, a VO2max session will typically see a very similar TSS to a level 4 session. Generally I find that about five minutes is about the longest that most athletes are willing to sustain these efforts and equal to a little less than equal rest works well. Since we did a short test and long test to establish training levels, while the workouts often say >105%, generally I will use the five minute test result as the floor for these efforts which is typically greater than the 105%. It is also worth noting that while these efforts have a strong aerobic contribution, they are still very much an aerobic effort and almost all adaptations from training in this level are aerobic in nature.
