Subject: RE: Fred D Mentor Group - Part II

Just got back from Maui.

Holy $&%#...that race was WAY harder than last year.  It's pretty normal for the winds to blow on the lower section, but the 20 mph winds stayed all the way up and actually got stronger as the day went on.  I got to the 5000 foot mark at 1:40, right on track for a 3:20 finish, but I knew once the switchbacks started, and I was only going 7.5 mph into the wind, it wasn't going to happen.  I paced myself okay, and still felt ok up to 8500 feet, but as my time goals slipped, I started to lose a little focus and I just wanted to go to sleep as the altitude was likely getting to me a little bit.

Once we got to the last 3 miles, my legs were just tired.  Finished in 3:40 and change, about 3 minutes slower than last year.  A guy that finished just ahead of me was using a power meter and said he pushed more watts this year (not sure how many more watts, but 238 this year.  He weighs about the same as me) and was 14 minutes slower this year.  So I guess that's about right...I was hoping to go around 15 minutes faster this year, so I'm guessing I executed my race pretty well given the conditions.

I was the first one in my group to finish, but was really worried about everyone else making the 6:30 cutoff.  Luckily, a few of them came in between 5 and 6 hours...including my girlfriend who came in at 6:01.

full RR to come shortly...

um, excuse me? I see the words you wrote but they do not make any sense to me in the order in which they occur....

That has got to be one BAMF.

It was his 50th birthday present to himself... Undecided

He went 11:33 last week.

Good grief. Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a Corvette? Definitely a BAMF.

He's off the bike only about 8 mins off his pace from last week.  He's blowing my mind!

Sounds like a rough race, congrats!  I've done the ride down the volcano, I can't imagine going up it.  You and Chris have given me something to add to my bucket list.

Yeah, you've got to try to just let it go.  Look at everything that was stacked up against you and you still held your power for most of the ride.  Walking a golf course in the heat can really sap you - more than you would think.  You were likely dehydrated to begin the ride and then didn't have your proper nutrition to boot.  I say you did well with what you were dealing with!

Any chance of repeating the ride in a few days once you get yourself back to normal?

Thanks for the thoughts guys.  I'll do another longish ride this coming weekend and see how everything shakes out.

Neil, what FTP are you using to set your target power and what is your target power ?

Is your last Oly 90% of that FTP ? Is you target 80% of that FTP ?

Where to start:

Elaine - great race, way to go!

Jason - that sounds like an epic type of ride.  Given the conditions it really sounds like you nailed your pacing just right.

Arend - your friend is nuts....but that's a good thing.  Definitely x3 on the BAMF.

Can't wait to hear how the others have done.

Mark - hope you are having a great run out there.

Cycle to the Sun is moving the race to end of June next year, which likely won't fit into my schedule well.  Just means it's more likely that I tackle the other mountain race in Hawaii...Sea to Stars.  Climbing to 9300 feet of Mauna Kea.  Not as much climbing as Haleakala, but a more difficult race.  It's about 15 miles longer, and the finishing stretch is about 3 miles that averages over 15%.

Our teams best rider, Tony, who used to race Cat 1 and has won the race before gave me some perspective from his race last year (he finished 5th).  He said the race was so hard that year he had to get off his bike 4 times.  That already is a red flag.  But Tony said that even though he got off his bike 4 times, he still passed a guy (who finished 3rd at Haleakala this year) because he was puking on his bike.  And while Tony was off his bike, the spectators were cheering him on because the guy in 4th (also a Cat 1) was just up the road, and was lying on the ground.

Sounds like fun huh?

Devin finished IM Canada.  At just a few days over 18 years old, he's the youngest type 1 diabetic to complete an Ironman.  13:47 ain't too shabby either.

Thanks all. Weird day. Legs didnt feel too terrible off the bike but I started coughing a lot about mile 4 on the run. So I decided to err on the side of caution and shut it down. Walked to get my HR as low as possible and still finish.

Final descent after Yellow pass was whipping wind that was changing direction. I bombed down. Probably dumb but my danger sense shuts off when I'm descending. Passed a ton of people there.

Will write more later but typing on an iPhone sucks.

Hey team - Well figuratively speaking I crashed and burned...as did most of the field at this event.  It was crazy hot and humid (89 & humid) and the bike course was difficult.  I was pretty aggressive on the swim and overly aggressive on the bike and I paid for it.  The run was exposed and I was walking in the first 2 miles.  I ended up finishing 3rd AG and 19th OA out of 150+ finishers.  I considered DNF but all I could think about was bringing my daughter across the finish line so toughed it out...painful slog.

Learned a valuable lesson today about pacing.  Not going to get to down on myself about this one but still kinda sucks!

Congrats to all racing this past weekend..looks like you fared better than me .
