Both Justin and Sean have had bike's added to the Bike Gallery: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/Albums/Album/17246 And I noticed that my MTB has not made the gallery either. So, I have to find one of Le' Grande Orange to pop in there. And if anyone else has anything to add, please post it or send it to me. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm looking for a good nutrition supplement for my olympic distance race which I'm planning to do in 2:40-3 hours. I plan on doing at least 4-6 2+ hour workouts in my training as well to prepare me. I heard good things about efs liquid shot, could use one container for the entire race plus a sports drinks. Any good suggestions on what I can try!? It's early and I really should start practicing good nutrition as my workouts grow longer! |

How many calories do you think that you'll need on the bike after a 1500m swim? Do you plan to carry water/nutrition with you on the run? |

I've never tried EFS but on my 2 + hr bike workouts I use a bottle of Hammer Perpetuem (http://www.hammernutrition.com/perpetuem/) and depending how long I'm going for, I'll bring something solid to eat. I personally really like Jelly Belly's Sport Beans and Honey Stinger's Waffles and Chews. I'll also add a bottle of a basic electrolyte drink (Hammer or Nuun) and water as needed. For my long runs I stick to gels because I find I have a hard time digesting anything more than that. |

I've used gels a lot in the past but they're such a hassle to open on the bike! I believe around 400-500 calories for the whole race should be sufficient but I really do need to practice. I always rely on water stations on the run, never have bought my own liquids into a race. I find that my body can tolerate most any form of sugars, so long as it isn't gatorade. I do plan to practice and would just bring one for the entire event. Another strategy would be to have a good bottle with enough calories for the bike and drink the course energy drink as well. Ideally I would like to have something I can use on both the bike and the run. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a pretty long and sorry history with Oly nutrition, I think because I tend to push really high intensities on the bike and run, have an amazing gag reflex, and don't have much of a sweet tooth. I have even puked on the bike leg. Ugh. The only thing that has (usually) works for me is one gu (gel) on the bike, and one on the run. They have to be certain brands/flavors that have a thinner consistency and not too sickly sweet a flavor: PowerBar Tangerine (which helpfully comes with big wallops of electrolytes and caffeine) and Hammer Apple Cinnamon. I stockpile these because I cannot live off the course. (Pretty much everything else has failed to go down or stay down in a race situation). I don't eat a big breakfast beforehand either--only if the race had an afternoon start. Just a couple granola bars and coffee. Many people have a gu maybe an hour, or 45 minutes before the start. The only times I have tried this, I have ended up regretting it-- despite 37 years in endurance sports, my pre-race gut is still a nervous mess until I hit the water for the swim and that effects a miracle cure. For hydration, I have Nuun and water on the bike. Often I'll just drink water on the run (plus the Powerbar gu); depending on what sports drink is on offer and how hot the weather is, I might take the sports drink on the course or carry my own Nuun in a holster. (Sugary drinks including Gatorade also don't agree with my stomach.) If you don't want to try to open gu on the bike (it's easiest to use your teeth), some people use a gel flask and squeeze a couple packets in--maybe someone else can explain where it goes on the bike in a triathlon--have only seen the flask used for HM and marathon running. Not sure if you just squeeze it out as is, suck it out with a straw, or add water, or what. Seems like it would be more useful for iron distance than an Oly where you might be having only one or two. I would say for Oly distance, it's easier to overdo than under-do nutrition, and the main concern is that it is palatable and goes/stays down at race intensity. You probably won't "bonk" in an event that lasts less than 3 hours, assuming adequate food intake up to and including the night before (i.e. you didn't have stomach flu all week or something), there is something in your system before the start, and some minimal calorie intake on bike and run. Hydration and pacing are much more crucial. Edited by Hot Runner 2017-03-10 5:20 AM |

Any good suggestions on what I can try!? It's early and I really should start practicing good nutrition as my workouts grow longer! I have never used EFS, I have primarily used Hammer products or straight honey, but that is mostly during training, since I rarely race anything over a standard sprint distance. Opening packets of gel on the bike can be a bit of a challenge, but it gets easier with practice. I generally use a 3 oz bottle that I fill with honey. It has a flip top, so it is easy to use. Super secret tip, you can find them in the travel section of any drug store/Walmart for a buck. I stuff it in the leg of my tri suit for the bike during T1, pull it out and take a shot near the end of the bike leg, and leave it in transition during T2. Water on the bike and water on the run and I can be OK. But, again, I only have done sprints, so YMMV. Karen and Janyne both mentioned pre race nutrition. Do not underestimate the importance of that, especially at that distance. |

Ideally I would like to have something I can use on both the bike and the run. I'm a fan of GU gles. I bought a multi-pack from Amazon and experimented with the flavors. The Espresso Love flavor, in particular, is one of the most delicious things ever (when you are an hour or two into a ride or run). If you are having trouble opening gels, I find the tried and true method of taping the gels to your bike works great. If you aren't familiar with this, basically use black electrical tape to tape down the gels by taping around the top part that tears off (leave the bottom free). They are easily accessible and to eat you just reach down and rip the gel off of the bike. The top tab stays taped to the bike and the gel is opened for you. Very easy and doesn't leave you holding the little tab and wondering what to do with it. The tape works well and won't mar your paint nor leave a residue. If you haven't tried it, give it a shot. For a multi-hour ride, sometimes you want real food and not gels. In that case, I like Uncrustables PB&J. Delicious when you need some solid food. Personally, my effort starts to notably decline after about an hour and 15 or hour and a half if I don't get some calories. I try and drink around 16-20oz or so of water or Gatorade each hour and have a gel at least once an hour. Of course YMMV. Having bonked hard on a 3 hour ride before, I don't ever want to go through that again so I likely overdo it on the nutrition. Edited by awm007 2017-03-10 10:45 AM |

Regarding Gu being difficult to open, you can always snip a bit on the top so that they are easier to pull open. Just use a scissors to cut a tiny amount as a starter. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For an oly, for me, it's some very similar version of the following. Long and short - good breakfast, maybe 100 calories within 30' of start, 150-200 calories typically on the bike, then 0-100 (usually 0) calories on the run. Details: Goodly breakfast (big bowl of grape nuts with greek yoghurt and milk and honey and maybe blueberries, or a bagel to 1.5 bagels with butter and nut butter, or the like). I'll take a GU or one of those Gatorade pre-race drinks like 20'-30' before the start. Then sip Nuun or 1/2 strength Skratch (or water if that's all that I have) up to the start. Just sipping, though, as I don't want a full belly before the swim. I'll take one BTA bottle of Skratch or Gatorade or something with some sugar and salt on the bike. Then plan to grab a water on course if and only if I'm feeling REALLY dry. Otherwise, the one is fine. I'll take two gel on course with me (I, too, like the Powergel ones while racing, as they're not as sticky/thick as GU and go down easier for me on course - but GU works OK, too, if that's what I have). If I'm redlined and not flagging, then I'll take one about 1/2 way to usually more like 2/3 of the way through the bike and save the other for the run. If I'm feeling like maybe breakfast wasn't enough, I'll take one at 1/3 and one before I get off (or so has been my plan - never had to do that and prefer just one on the bike). I'll take the second (or third - always have an extra gel at T2) one with me on the run. I play that by ear, but most often have been going too hard to want to take a gel and have felt like the calories on the bike from the gel and drink were enough to get me across the line without bonking. I like having the option of the gel on the run, though. Makes me not feel like I need it, whereas if I didn't have one I'd probably be cursing myself looking for 100 calories! Enjoy the race! Oly's are a wonderfully brutal distance. Matt |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For an Oly, I've generally had a pair of Powerbar gels available on the bike. I don't always use both though, have to see how I'm feeling. Never had anything on the run as intensity was too high to manage anything. Water was usually one bottle on the bike, and usually nothing on the run again. By the time it'd help I'd be near or past the finish anyway. Especially since I couldn't have it right away on the run. Most Olys I've done didn't have any aid stations on the bike. Bottle was between the arms in aero as much I as I could. Gels were either in a bento box, or taped directly to the top tube right behind the stem. For this, I'd tape it right at the tear line so that top piece would stay on the bike. Think I'd tuck the rest of the wrapper just inside the lower cuff on the shorts leg. Then chuck it at a station, if present, or at T2, if I remembered. For the bento box, I had a Dark Speed Works one, which was rather long so lots of space in it. Then a Bontrager one with the Speed Concept, also a longer one. Both had a decent amount of space, so were easy to use. The Bontrager didn't actually have a zipper or fasteners. Just flaps that overlapped on top. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry for another "check in" I am feeling really disconnected recently. I dont have internet access at work as I am still in class room training for the next few weeks. The new house is good but a lot of little jobs have been taking up time so training has been very limited. I am trying to get back into a grove and have decided to focus most of my energy on the bike. I might end up doing a couple of local runs but will be focusing mostly on gravel type races for the year. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just found out that I will need to move as well, either by the end of this school year in mid-June, or in August after I get back for the next one (which I think would actually be worse, as it's rainy season and the busiest time of year, plus jet lag). My school's contract with the landlord is up, and the landlord is selling the apartment. Really, really hope I can find somewhere as quiet as this place usually is (Tet parties excepted). I do most of my training early AM so am almost always in bed by 9 PM, sometimes as early as 8 if I have a longer AM workout. If I don't get my 8 hours, I have a distressing tendency to get sick all the time as well as constantly forget things. So having a quiet building and neighbors really, really matters. Also hope I can ride the trainer without disturbing people downstairs. Right now there is a coffee shop below me, so they are either not there when I train, or sometimes (starting between 6 and 6:30 AM) down there roasting the day's beans--quite pleasant, actually.. Plus my parents sound like they are getting serious about moving to Idaho over the summer. I am now looking at basically an entire summer of packing, moving, and unpacking. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Quiet weekend in the manatee pond. Hopefully that means that you all had a great weekend outside in some nice spring weather. Our summer is starting to disappear here. I'm happy that the really intense heat is going (no doubt it will pop its head up once or twice in late March or early April) and I don't mind the rain, but I would really like it to stay light in the mornings. Is there any place on earth where it is daylight from 5am to 7pm every day of the year? If there is maybe I need to move there. Oh and a very quick Dopey Challenge update - we have all secured our entries so now it's time for serious training (which we have already started) and serious savings so we can all get there. Just thinking about it is making me a little nervous already ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It would not be 5 AM to 7 PM--don't think that's physically possible year-round on Earth, but if you live pretty much smack on the equator (i.e. Singapore) your daylight will be a very predictable 12 hours every day. Then again, if you want any cool weather, there might be compelling reasons not to! Saigon isn't bad--I think we're at 12.5 degrees north, and it really doesn't vary that much. Useable light (as in you can run without a headlamp or street lights) right now from about 5:45 AM to 6:20 PM; it will only vary by about 25-30 minutes at either end between winter and summer. It's always light by 6, and never really dark before 5:45. That would give most people working 9-5 jobs a chance to at least get in a morning run, and commute home from work in the daylight every day. |
